Universal Audio 4-710D 4 Channel Preamp
The Universal Audio 4-710d is a boutique quality, four-channel microphone/line preamplifier with unique tube and solid-state tone blending capabilities — perfect for a wide range of microphone and instrument sources. This versatile multi-channel preamp offers selectable 1176-style compression circuitry on each channel, plus four additional line inputs feeding eight channels of pristine analog-to-digital conversion. Building upon UA’s classic analog design approach, combined with smart modern features, the 4-710d is the most flexible preamp in the UA lineup. At the core of the 4-710d are four channels of tone-blending “Twin-Finity” mic preamps with true-bypass 1176-style compression, including specially tuned "fast" and "slow" settings. Each of the four mic preamp channels allows for continuously variable phase-aligned tone, between a 100% tube and 100% solid-state signal path. Send and return jacks are available for external processing or signal access. The eight analog inputs are digitized via ultra high-quality 24-bit A/D converters at selectable sample rates up to 192 kHz. Digital output is available via dual ADAT “lightpipe” or AES/EBU DB-25 connectors, facilitating integration with most popular audio interfaces.

Outstanding and flexible preamp - the tube inputs sound great. The twinfinity dial is subtle but gives noticeable control over the tone.Very flexible unit given the 4 additional adat inputs and the unit works seamlessly with UA apollo interfaces. The 1176 style compression circuits are useful for taming transients but if you want any kind of tonal control over the compression you'll need to add another compressor in elsewhere. All in all exceptional value for money considering the digital conversion, additional inputs and the (limited) compression.

This is actually the second purchase of this Universal Audio 4 710D Four Channel Microphone Preamp. The first was purchased 5 years or more ago and is going strong. No issues with it at all. The second purchase was made to add to a growing studio. As with all UA devices, the build is solid and the sound quality is top of the line. The blend control allows the blending of solid state and vacuum tube circuits to get an incredible clean sound.

I have a modest home/warehouse studio.....using Protools 8 with a digi 003. For years I've been working with the digi003 preamps, Presonus digimaxFS preamps, while occasionally borrowing some great preamps (Grace, Universal Audio, API, etc). When I finally surmised that I could splurge for a good piece for my studio, I did some research and found the UA 4-710D. Frankly, I was attracted by the amount of pres (4) and all the features (A/D conversion, compression, tube/solid, multiple outs, etc). It was no brainer for me givin the bang for the buck. I expected to be impressed, but I did not know how much of an impact having this piece was going to have on the recording I was doing. I was in utter shock when I began to experience the results from using the UA. ... MoreI have a modest home/warehouse studio.....using Protools 8 with a digi 003. I was in utter shock when I began to experience the results from using the UA. Everything I put through it sounded full, round, bigger, better, cleaner, and more musical. So far I've recorded acoustic guitar, keys, vocals, synth lines, electric beats, and bass through this amazing piece. I can't wait to record drums with it. Bass sounds INCREDIBLE just going direct through it. For the price, I could not be happier with this piece. I would recommend this piece to anyone, but especially to someone who is looking for their first quality set of preamps and is currently using the mediocre A/D conversion of their audio interface. If that is your current scenario....this thing will blow your socks off.

I bought this because of hearing how good the mic pres were and also having the limiting function on the 4 channels. Also it gave me 4 more analog input options for using any pre amp of my choice. This gave my set up more options and freedom from before when using an 8 channel optical out put pre unit.So far I have been very happy with it! The pres sound great and I love them on the all tube mode but it's nice to have the option of not using the tubes also.My go to Pre for bass, guitar, and some drums is the API 3124 but when I compared them it was pretty close especially on direct bass guitar.I wasn't planning on using it for vocals since I have a channel strip I am very pleased with for that. I bought this unit for expanding my inputs on a Focusrite Clarett 8Pre via ADAT. Works seamlessly in my home-studio!Great quality pre-amps with so many extra functions: built in compressor for each pre-amp, digital converter for 8 inputs in total,…Not cheap equipment but you do get a unit with a lot of built-in functions.
Great preamp! Hard to beat the value of this unit. Sounds great on most sources. Not my favorite stringed instrument preamp, but fantastic on vocals. Compared to a Digimax LT (not apples to apples, but it was what I had), it adds a very 3 dimensional sound to vocals. It's great. It's a little bit thin for use on acoustic guitars. Much prefer different preamps there.
The 4 preamps sound great on anything. The four extra channels of ADC are incredibly useful and add significant value. I’m running a Kemper in stereo and an Avalon 737 into them and the conversion is flawless. Need to find something for that other ADC channel now..
The UA 4-710d is not a vintage tube amp in anyway. It uses modern surface mount technology. The tubes are modern as well and changing the tubes to RCA NOS or Euro equivalents wont make much difference. However for a home studio, this unit is the biggest bang for your buck out there. The unit works well on mostly any source.
Overall:Stacked two of these for 8 ch on drums. Line outs of the bottom 4ch. into the top preamps 5-8 so all 8 ch. coming in ADAT to the ferrofish pulse 16dx. Clarity, so much clarity. With no EQ on drums, just some fast comp turned on some channels, sounds amazing pre mixing. Tube and solid state blending is amazing for dialing in your tone. All tube drum recordings are changing my life. Price keeps going up so really its a high end preamp and a great investment. I have 2 and they are both great, never heard of manufacturing problems anywhere except the other review on zZounds.. maybe user error or a heavy handed approach? 4 to 5 stars all around
I think it's worth noting, my favorite pre is the U.A. LA-610. This 4-710 sits right above a pair of LA-610's on my rack. There's little to add that hasn't been said about these... they are a no-brainer. I'd immediately replace them if necessary. Very intuitive layout, powerful, warm and present channels. This may be obvious to most, but if you're here wondering... This pre's on this 4-sum won't be mistaken for those of their big brothers, the LA-610 MK II or 1176 - but where you don't need that "Special" channel strip, these are more than satisfactory. Very musical and clean. Great job (again) Universal Audio!!I can see owning more than one in the near future.I'd be 1 more notch above awesome if the comp. was a full ratio knob aside from the "fast / slow" ... But, that said, the fact that it does have the comp. option and two nice levels at that, is already a plus. It's especially useful for tracking mic'd drums. If you have no quality pre's, this will give you 4 in one rack.If you have top notch pre's and need to fill some gap's these will fill many roles.
