My partner offered me the Varia vs3 gen2 and I have been playing with it today. I have some fresh dark roast beans (Amore coffee in Moonee Ponds ) and after 3 tries, I settled at 5.3 and it seems pretty good pulling a shot at 24-25scds. (Will readjust a bit at 5.1 or 5.2 to get closer to 27 seconds which is what I like).Well, I love it. I don’t think it is a 5 stars only because I found it a bit messy at first. Spraying the beans 3 times did fix most of the static but not completely. I purchased this unit without much research. I will try putting a small anti-static computer pad under it to help with discharging static since the plug is not grounded. Finally, there is the grind selector. They constantly moves while you are grinding. I think this was the tip of the iceberg for me. I am now using a piece of blue tape to keep track of where my grind setting was when I started grinding.

The Varia VS3 Coffee Grinder Gen 2 has been a great addition to my coffee setup, and I’ve been very happy with it so far. It’s a quality machine that performs well and does exactly what it promises. The grind consistency has been excellent, and it’s clear that this grinder is built with precision and durability in mind. While I haven’t used many other home coffee grinders for comparison, the Varia VS3 has exceeded my expectations. Its design is sleek, it operates smoothly, and it feels like a professional-grade grinder for home use.Overall, I’m very satisfied with this purchase and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others looking for a reliable, high-quality coffee grinder. It’s a solid choice for anyone passionate about their coffee.

Great grinder for the price

It's my first time buying a grinder, the experience and packing 10/10.Pros:- great quality, everything feels premium, materials, etc.- Performs great, it does take a little time but not crazy (it's a home grinder, we don't need a 5 second grind lol)- Really quiet, doesn't make that much noise.- There's normal static but when I grind 20g I get out 20g ( I always use the little water spray)Cons:- The power conector has a giant box, not ideal if you want a clean cable setup at your counter.- There's a lot of data of this grinder not working after a year, but they supposedly ffixed this with gen 2, but still feels like a risk buying this grinder, From reading in reddit looks like if you provide the right information that Cuistomer Services asks for, they wil ... MoreIt's my first time buying a grinder, the experience and packing 10/10.Pros:- great quality, everything feels premium, materials, etc.- Performs great, it does take a little time but not crazy (it's a home grinder, we don't need a 5 second grind lol)- Really quiet, doesn't make that much noise.- There's normal static but when I grind 20g I get out 20g ( I always use the little water spray)Cons:- The power conector has a giant box, not ideal if you want a clean cable setup at your counter.- There's a lot of data of this grinder not working after a year, but they supposedly ffixed this with gen 2, but still feels like a risk buying this grinder, From reading in reddit looks like if you provide the right information that Cuistomer Services asks for, they wil help you out, but honestly an extended warranty and not only a year, would make people choose more this grinder.- When you grind, the dial sometimes moves a little, so you have to keep on eye on that only, but it's micro movements, nothing crazy.Overall:I love this grinder, I took the risk even after the lots of post about it stopping working, hopefuly it will last for a long time. Looks super clean on ym setup and performs great, couldn't ask for more.

Remarkable espresso grinder
12 July 2024

AB shipped the VS3 quickly & well packaged. Varia package for International shipping, so it is unlikely to arrive damaged.Build quality seems really good. I ordered with Hypernova burr set and these were easy to fit.Espresso grind consistency is exceptional at this price point. The grinder is very quiet, slow (not a bad thing), is easily and quickly adjustable and has little retention.Niggles; some static - though comes with RDT atomiser to reduce this, small Hopper eg ? 30-ish gms beans (though it comes with bellows that could help hold more than double this... But then the catch cup would overflow.I would buy another. It is great

Terrible product. Motor is faulty
27 April 2024

I had this grinder for one month before the motor stopped working. DO NOT get this if you're looking to use it for espresso. The grinder is essentially a higher quality version of a portable grinder. While the materials are high quality, the engine just can't maintain an espresso grind while it can hold up to french press and other drip levels. While I hoped this was a fluke and a mistake I went online to see if anyone else had a similar experience. There is a reason the VS3 has been nicknamed a "Very Shitty" grinder on multiple threads and reviews. Unfortunately I found this out after buying the unit. I'm very disappointed in this product and the service by Varia. Do not buy this product.

When my Barazza Encore needed a new part recently I decided it was time to upgrade. The good people at AB recommended the Varia VS3 gen 2 and after reading several reviews I went for it.Physically, the grinder is gorgeous to look at. Stylish, petite, angular. It took only a few minutes to set up and make my first cup. I’d never tried spritzing my beans before but since the Varia came with a cute little bottle I decided to try it. The manual suggests putting the beans into the dosing cup before giving it a squirt but I think it’s better to use a separate container and keep the dosing cup dry. Whatever, there was truly minimal retention after the grind and just a tap on the bellows got the rest of it out. Whatever, there was truly minimal retention after the grind and just a tap on the bellows got the rest of it out. I use a rubber ear syringe (couple of dollars from the chemist) to blow out the tube and again there’s not much that gets stuck up there. Haven’t done a deep clean yet but there’s a little toolkit that comes with the grinder and easy to follow instructions. What I found most amazing was the TASTE! As soon as I found the best grind for my Aeropress I suddenly started discovering all kinds of aromas and flavours I’ve never had before in my so far two year coffee journey. My palette isn’t yet up to distinguishing berries and fruits - it all still tastes like coffee to me (which is, after all, what I like to drink…) but the actual coffee flavour is now much more dense and complex and utterly delicious. For the record I began to have problems with caffeine so now I use a single origin Colombian decaf from my local roaster. Love it.This was a brilliant recommendation, AB. I’m really happy with the Varia and have no hesitation in awarding it an Olympic gold medal.Cheers,Les

The coffee grinder looks well built. I have been using it for a few weeks now and the grinder seems to do its job. The coffee is delicious. The instructions states that this will improve over time, but you have to go through sever kg of beans to 'season' it. They could have engineered it better to prevent the mess in the first place. While the grinder itself looks well built, the accessories are of very poor quality. The bellows looks like cheap rubber and I question if it is actually food grade. The rubber is also sticky, so the grounds stick to it, as a result it looks messy. The included 'finger protector' that goes into the chute acts as a great catcher of beans. In the end, the only reason you would stick your fingers into the chute is because the protector catches the beans and you have to work them through. I removed the protector, it doesn't have any function and is just a nuisance. It is made of the same cheap rubber as the bellows and also sticky and catches the grounds and looks messy. The package includes a little spray bottle to spray water onto your beans to reduce the mess when grinding. However, I found that the bottle was completely useless, on the first press it practically fell apart and it never worked. So overall, the poor quality of the accessories make me really doubt the quality of the grinder itself. They would have been better of to not include the accessories if they are useless in the first place.

Very good grinder
23 December 2024

This grinder does what it is supposed to do. There’s no retention, the stepless adjustment allows very fine tuning and it is extraordinarily quiet. You will need a funnel to get the grinds into your portafilter. Make sure you get a good one that allows you to tamp with the funnel in place. Without a funnel, your grinds will drop all over the counter.I’m not convinced that spritzing the beans makes any difference. Regardless, you’ll need to brush the last few beans into the gears and a little bit of grind will fall out after you’re done. Not a big deal.
