I bought these Veja Esplar in white/maroon yesterday at Bloomingdales and had done all the research regarding the fit and lack of comfort from all the online reviews. My usual shoe size is 10 and I purchased the 10/41 which is true to size. Even though I knew the shoes would need breaking in and not be super comfortable from day one I still made the purchase because I love how they look. Yes, the tongue is very stiff and not padded so it does cut into your ankle. My solution was to tie the shoes normally until the last hole and I tied that part UNDER the tongue and then brought the lace over the tongue. That completely lifts the tongue away from your ankle and solves that problem. I have been wearing the shoes constantly since yesterday, have bent and twisted them ... I have to say now after only one day the shoes are now completely comfortable. So for those of you willing to break them in and customize them to your foot you will love wearing them as they go with everything. These are definitely not running shoes but for style and walking they are perfect!

I love the way these shoes look, and didn't find any problems with the tongue (as other reviewers have mentioned) after the first 1-2 wears. I've had my shoes for about a year now of average wear, and I will say that they are completely worn through. The bottom sole is almost completely down to nothing, and the shoes look insanely crumpled and worn. They are way way more destroyed looking than any other pair of sneakers I've had with the same amount of usage. I know that they're white, but I have periodically cleaned and conditioned them. That also doesn't account for the fact that the sole is basically threadbare at this point. They honestly look like a pair of shoes someone has had in a closet for decades. For sneakers this expensive I would've expected much ... When I ordered the white/black combo, there were 2 left in the company. Now they are sold out, so I’m happy I chose the right size. They run big! I am normally a US 7, and after reading the reviews, I ordered the womens 6, which is a men’s 4. They fit perfectly, and I have enough room with a little sock on. They are really stiff when you get them, but break in quickly. The tongue was digging in the front of my leg! I actually thought about returning them but decided to try to break them in and I’m happy I did! I read to push the tongue over to the side until you break them in and that worked like a charm. After 3-4 wears they were broken in and I don’t have to do that anymore! They are now super-comfortable. They can be dressed up or down. Laces are whiter than the ... Laces are whiter than the shoe which is like an eggshell color but it doesn’t bother me. I bought them for occasional wear-more like a fashion shoe-but have been wearing them ALL THE TIME! You can keep the sides clean with a sponge with dish soap or wipe them with a Mr. Clean magic eraser. I definitely want another pair!!

I love the fit and style of this very well made sneaker. I have problem feet and these fit comfortably from the moment I put them on and no break in necessary. I have repeatedly worn them all day with no discomfort at all. I considered putting an insert in just in case, but there has been no need. They are also easy to clean- red wine was accidentally spilled on them and they cleaned up with a damp clothe- I was shocked!
These shoes were super cute. I could forgive the stiffness during the break-in period, which thankfully was relatively short (couple days). I could forgive my heel slipping out, which thankfully stopped after they were broken in. I could forgive the laces being extremely difficult to pull through each eyelet. If there were odor issues, which there weren't, I would have found a way to forgive and deal with that. But what I cannot forgive is that the soles started separating after wearing about 6 times. I have never experienced anything like this--I weigh 100 lbs. sopping wet, and am not hard on my shoes.
Esthetically, the shoes are great...comfort, not as much. I find the leather to be hard..and the shoes sound heavy when you walk. They sound like dress shoes. I am in between a 6.5 and 7, usually a 7 in sneakers and so I ordered a 37. My heel comes up when I walk. I would say these run a little large, however since they don't come in 1/2 sizes, I think a 6 would have been too small. I will wear these only on occasion, when I know I won't be doing too much walking. I find my Cole Haan sneakers to be much more lighter and more comfy for all day walking. I would not purchase another pair of the Vejas.
I’m a true size 6. I got the size 37 and they were too big. I previously got these in a different color in 36 and they were too small. I need a half size for Veja which they don’t offer. Also, these were heavier than any sneaker I’ve ever worn. I got these in the “extra white” and black. These were not white at all. More cream/yellowish. Ended up returning because the sizing and color were both so off.
These are my favorite sneakers. I am now going on my 3rd pair since 2016. They have each lasted four years, I have changed the laces and use them until they are worn out. I wear these every day, for work, for travel, with jeans, dresses, loungewear.I love Veja because they are a conscious company, sustainably source their rubber in Brazil and don’t do any advertising. These shoes are fair trade too.
Unfortunately, these shoes require numerous internet searches on "how to break them in," and "why is the tongue overly long and what to do about it?" and "why don't they fit right?" Some people have apparently been able to manipulate the leather or slide the tongue to the side or tuck it under (?) or exchange them for a different size, but seriously?! That's a lot of work for a pair of shoes. I don't think mine will ever fit right, and just a few minutes of wear in the house rubbed my ankles raw. Sure, they are cute, and stylish, but I, for one, am not willing to sacrifice comfort for that. Especially because I need a comfortable shoe for walking and travel. Celebs who wear these must have gotten them for free and were romanced by the sustainability or something. ... I wanted vejas and ordered both these esplars and a similar campo. I found the veja size chart to be off. I’m usually a 7.5-8 in shoes, but often an 8.5 in lifestyle sneakers. I originally tried a 39, since that said 8, but it definitely fit more like a 9. The 38 fit like an 8, so it was a tad on the small side but better than the too-big 39. A half size would have been perfect! Ultimately, I picked these esplars over the campos because they felt just a tiny bit longer (better fit), which made them a tiny bit more comfortable. And I liked the blue color of the V better than the more greenish campo style I’d bought. These shoes are really cute and the light blue V is perfect. It wasn’t terrible, though, and I’m counting on friends and the other reviewers who say the shoes soften and get much more comfy. I’ve worn these esplars several times now for a few hours at a time, and they are starting to break in. Glad I bought them and glad I went with the smaller size! 4 stars bc they’re not comfy right out of the box.
