A useless product

An absolutely useless product. I have the original inhaler that Vicks made a few years ago which was brilliant. I gave this to my daughter recently when she had some sinus issues and bought this new version for myself. It is nowhere near as effective as the original they did, which had a separate plastic beaker which held the boiling water and sat within an outer, hard, plastic container, which therefore kept in the heat and worked very well. I presume it has been replaced for possible health and safety issues, but this new version is useless without boiling water and the casing has extremely poor insulation and does not retain the heat and thus the steam needed for inhalation.

If you’re looking for something to help relieve a dry chesty cough, you will get infinitely more steam from a cup of coffee. The steam is not even visible escaping from the small hole in the top, it all seems to collect in the blue rim causing condensation in there. I wasn’t hugely interested in using the scent pads since my understanding is that steam is what you need to relieve a cough. However when you do use one it simply means that the inhaler makes it easier to smell. It is just a smell though, and one that you might not want to be so close to.

I think the name “steam inhaler” is a bit misleading. This inhaler uses only warm, not boiling, water so there’s very little steam. However the Vicks Vapopads are activated well in the warm water and I could feel them easing the congestion and sinus pain after just a few minutes. I will say that I did find using a full vapopad was too much for me so I used them halved. This was also super easy to clean and store. Would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone.

Impressive little device
21 April 2023

I was really happy to receive this product, as a mum of 5 stuffy kids and hay-fever sufferer, it's been a great help. It's really easy to use and is very effective. I like the size of it and its portability. I prefer a menthol scent although you can have lavender and rosemary but this wouldn't suit me.All in all it's a good product, how much it would cost to replace the scent pads is dependant on how much I would use this in the future but it's a decent little product.

It works well
25 November 2022

I bought this a couple of days ago after suffering from a cough for years , (for which the GP could find no reason). Didn't think I had anything to loose and I have to say it has worked better than I thought it would. I did originally purchase a plug in one from another store but I had to return it as it was missing a part. I (very carefully) use boiling water and only half fill it. I did purchase the vicks pads but I find a few drops of Olbas oil works just as well. The mask part at the top isn't big enough to cover mouth and nose so you have to do one or the other but it works. Unblocks my nose very easily and mouth breathing has eased my cough no end. It's lost a star because you have to keep heating the water up but still worth the money.

Nice smell, but wouldn't buy!
21 April 2023

I was excited about this item as my son and I have had colds for what seems an eternity. I honestly thought this would be a great way to unblock both of us.However! As lovely as it smelt, my son refused to have it near him. I used it, but it all honesty I could have just used a bowl with some essential oils in it to unblock me.Don't get me wrong, this would be great to take away with you, but I don't expect to be getting a cold on holiday, and with a price tag of ÂŁ10 and then ÂŁ8 for the refill tabs, it's quite steep for what it actually offers. This isn't something I'd recommend, but if you travel a lot then yes it is easier than a bowl of water. But right now, in the climate we are in, the price is ridiculous.

Rubbish
22 March 2024

Absolute rubbish. Does nothing - no steam comes out of it - also the vapour pads were missing. It’s as effective as pouring hot water into a plastic cup - which basically is all it is. I noticed that a lot of the good reviews here were from part of a promotion. Please don’t waste your money on this. I took it back for a refund.

Useless bit of plastic
27 July 2024

This is a complete waste of money. Without the pad, it is no more effective than a basin and a towel over the head. With the pad, I found the Vick fumes so strong that even with my eyes closed they were stinging. Now the thing is impregnated with the Vicks smell despite several washings. Totally useless

Vicks Ran out of Steam @ Product Development Stage
24 February 2024

I wish I had seen the reviews before I purchased this utterly ineffective piece of plastic. I would have given 0 stars if possible because there’s simply no point to it. If only at boiling point, is the invisible gas of steam created, how are Vicks therefore claiming this is a steam inhaler when we can only use hot tap water? It really just feels like a cheap cash grab at this point, it is not fit for purpose and makes false claims regarding its efficacy.
