I have been holding off on writing a review until I was able to use this product for over a year to give it time to find flaws, issues, and benefits. I can say without of doubt, this grinder goes the distance. I am a railroader who travels like a door to door salesman everyday, and the most important gear to me other than safety equipment, is my coffee. The Java goes with me on every trip and gets thrown around in my grip daily. When I started my venture to start making coffee on the road, it started with finding a reliable grinder. I needed something durable that was crush proof and could withstand being lugged around and thrown around in grip ( travel duffel bag) without damage or worrying about something falling apart. This stands the test! This stands the test! Consistency is key to life and have that grind some out the same each and every time so I can make a pour over or French press brings nothing but pure joy.Now I can admit, when I first saw this product, I was blown away by the price tag and said who the f’ would spend this much on a grinder. Then you pick up the Java and you feel the metal, the weight, and detail and realize this things built to last not built to replace. You have a bajillion settings to choose from for grind settings. Now I can say I only use the third click from the finest setting and I get a great cup each time.If you’re looking for something to travel with that you don’t have to worry about breaking, this is for you.The ONLY thing I would suggest, is a small amount of loctite on the carabiner hook. It has two small screws that wiggle loose from moving around on the locomotives. Other than that, solid product.

Yeah it’s costly, I waited till it was on sale. I’d been using a Ninja to grind my beans and am over their ultimate failure. I wanted a manual option and found Vssl. After researching and looking into other grinders, I choose this brand. I’d never used a manual grinder before. Using this for the first time was amazing! I set the dial to what I guessed would be a good grind, filled it up and cranked away. Ok, the resistance was concerning but kept cranking and I got over it quickly. Just keep on till there’s no resistance and the crank runs smooth again. Easy to use, great grind and a difference in flavor! No electricity needed, perfect one cup portioning, easy fresh ground coffee and travel size. I’ve used it at home and a road trip! Great investment.

I purchased my grinder 18 months ago. I use it on weekends and occasionally on camping trips. Regular, but not high (daily) use. After about 1 year, one of the hinge pins that attach the crank handle to the top broke. A stainless cotter pin I had on hand worked as a repair. Not a big deal, but a little disappointing.Recently, the snap-on connection that attaches the top to the base has developed wear resulting in some play in the fit and a mess of aluminum shavings inside the grinder. So now, unusable. The grinder appeared to be a robust design and for $160 it should be. Sadly, not the value I expected.Next step: Test this outfit's warranty policy.

I've been using an electric blade coffee grinder for decades and it's been impossible to return to since getting the VSSL Java Grinder. There are 3 reasons why. The grind is so much more refined and my coffee now tastes much more nuanced. The act of cranking on this thing at chest height releases the most amazing coffee aroma. And finally, you ever throw a new bit in a power drill and it handily chews through wood? Well that's what cranking on this feels like. It chews. It's hungry. The finishes are perfect, the craftsmanship is bomber and every detail has been considered. I've brought it to the climbing gym to show my coffee buddies how sweet this thing is!
Was sad that this cannot grind small enough for a portable espresso grind. On the finest setting it is so close to an espresso grind I think just a little tweeking by the company, adding the E&B Burr to this it would be better than the Timemore Nano Plus. The E&B burr set would reduce the grind time as well. Awesome designed unit would be great for poor overs and french press on the go. Very good quality materials. This works great with up to 160z of beans and was able to do a grind for the Handpresso @ 12 grams, but not quite fine enough for the PicoPresso @14 grams to get a good pull. The Company is very customer service based and will not hesitate to take care of its customers. They have made a new loyal fan.
If you want a coffee grinder that does the one job it’s supposed to do, the VSSL Java is your grinder. That’s saying a lot, because many coffee grinders don’t do a very good job of grinding coffee. The VSSL does, and in a beautifully machined and well-designed package. The grind settings take trial and error to dial in, and there’s no convenient way to gauge where you set your grind unless you count clicks, but I always brew with the same method so once I found my preferred grind side I left it alone. If you’re doing multiple grind settings it would take more trial and error, but it would work. The grind quality and consistency is fantastic.Mine didn’t come with a burr brush, but I have a little brush I can use to brush off the grinder so that isn’t a tragedy, and ... MoreIf you want a coffee grinder that does the one job it’s supposed to do, the VSSL Java is your grinder. The grind quality and consistency is fantastic.Mine didn’t come with a burr brush, but I have a little brush I can use to brush off the grinder so that isn’t a tragedy, and the glue that holds the tiny magnet inside the handle, which keeps it attached to the screw in handle mechanism, came unglued the first time I used it, so there’s some room for improvement in the smallest details, but if you’re looking for a super high quality hand grinder, you’ll probably be happy with the VSSL. I’ve use it on average once a day for almost four months now.
This grinder was better than I imagined. It is well built, with great quality and ease to use. I have several grinders, both manual and electric and this unit far outweighs them all. The grinder cuts through the beans with ease resulting in evenly-cut beans throughout the batch. I look forward to making my Java in the morning or whenever I have that urge to drink a perfect coffee. I have been recently introduced to brewing coffee using the French press method and I would not go back to a regular drip or brew. I highly recommend this well-crafter grinder as a part of your camp cooking or home kitchen set.A great small business that made sure I received my unit on time and was well-packed for shipment. Thank you for taking the time in creating this grinder.
For my personal use each morning, I want a hand grinder that adds to the experience. I've already been through 2 of them, and they have broken in one way or another.I just got the VSSL Java Coffee Grinder a few weeks ago, and it's amazing. Everything I didn't like in the previous grinders is a non-issue with this one. The weight, the fit and finish, the grind settings and especially the aesthetics. The black and copper is a work of art to behold. Everything fits together perfectly machined. And of course, the coffee grind is perfect. It's worth noting the capacity is small, but that's the point. This grinder is for 1 cup, and is portable for travel. But if you want 2 cups, it's a cinch to grind another after the first. I received this product in a normal and prompt shipping time. Packaging was great and protected well. Pro's- The first touch and feel lets you know this is a well designed and constructed item. It assembles and preforms with ease. The grinding and adjustable grind dial works awesome. So far used it three times and it's better than anticipated. The only Con - If any, it's a little heavy for lightweight backpacking. Home, car camping or normal hiking/camping would be fine but I would grind the coffee before leaving if I was trimming weight or take it and call it a luxury items.
This is my first coffee grinder and as soon as I unpacked it I was impressed. The quality is top shelf. Since I have never had a coffee with fresh ground beans I had to try it. Set it up and started grinding. Made my first cup with the coffee press I bought with it. I’m hooked. No shortage of settings for the type of grind you want and grinds quickly. The carabiner is a nice touch. The one and only thing that I can find fault with is the wing nut that sets the grind stands proud of the grinder and prevents it from standing on its own while dumping the coffee into my press. I live on a boat so the compactness of the grinder is nice. I use it up to three times a day so hopefully it will last. If you are looking for a quality coffee grinder this is it.
