A really slow drive compared to my 16TB WD Elements. Not just a little slow, really slow. My other drive is 4-5x faster with transfers.Another problem I've encountered is a Windows 10 update somehow killed the USB-C to A connection to this drive. Now it only works from C to C. The drive is unrecognizable on two computers unless I use that particular cable. Weird, but I'm glad it's not (yet) bricked.

First and foremost, I fully recommend using RAIDs whenever storing information in the safest manner possible is critical to what you do. I have been using various RAIDs over the last decade, including WD RAIDs configured to RAID 1 (mirrored memory in which the 2 enclosed RAID Drives record 2 exact copies of all files on separate drives for ultimate protection). While this does cut the full capacity in half, the purpose again is ultimate protection, not ultimate space. When attached to my iMac, the drive throws errors frequently throughout the day hence rendering it unusable for any practical purpose. When diagnostics are run they come up clean. I have reconfigured it several times trying RAID 1 first and then RAID 0 with no luck (should have read reviews prior to purchasing). Manufacturer return policy is not easy to deal with. Not sure I'm going to bother as others seem to have reported getting replacements which were refurbs and had the same problem. Seems to be more of a software issue than a hardware issue. I suppose I'll use it as a $600.00 paperweight. Just to be clear - none of this falls on Best Buy. WD needs to resolve the problems with this particular model. Their other drives seem to work well.

You can use a timer to minimize the heat, if you can afford about 30 seconds wake up of these drives. They work fast under Win 10.but because of poor heat dissipation I was not impressed with these new drives. Because of that I decided to use all 8 of the internal WD Red 8TB drives in my Synology DS1815+ NAS. All drives worked but the performance is terrible. Mechanically all of them are noisy, very poorly balanced, works like my old washer and dryer set (well almost). Using four screws in screw less drive holders did not helped much. I contacted one of them and was told that the cost would range from $800 to $2,700 and that they would need the enclosure. If I had a working enclosure I wouldn’t need them. My thinking, based on the WD literature, was that if one of the drivers failed all I had to do was replace the bad drive and rebuild the RAID or I could even pull the good drive and put it in another enclosure. The main circuit board failed along with one of the two drives. Had it set to RAID 1 (Mirrored). WD tech support said nothing can be done except to buy a new enclosure and put the other working mirrored pair into the new enclosure. Since I purchased two of these units I was able to salvage the data from the working drive but will never buy again because of possibility of enclosure circuit board failure.
The hard drives are okay and good value for money. However, on my M1 Mac they crash a lot. The drive utilities software is very bad and I have older My Book Duos im not using, because the cause errors all the time. Data feels less save due to these problems.
