I've been using WD portable hard drives since 2005 when I bought a 60 GB drive to use for backups. Today, you can get more storage than that on an SD card, so times have changed. Every few years as my storage needs change I go out and buy the latest WD portable that fits my budget (the $75-150 range). Currently that is the My Passport Ultra. The reason I chose the Ultra over the vanilla My Passport is the USB-C port. My wife and I are both Mac users and our current laptops are USB-C only. I'm so tired of dongles and adapters to deal with USB-A connections, this just plugs right in and works. Extra points to WD for including a snap-on C-to-A adapter. I have three Ultras, a pair of 2TB drives and one 4TB drive. I have never had a single WD portable drive fail on me, ever. That 60GB portable lasted over a decade before I replaced it with a 128GB model. When I got my first Ultra, since I wanted the faster USB3 transfers I gave away four old USB2 portables I bought around 2010 and all were working fine. I give WD the highest marks for reliability. I also appreciate that WD has a recycling program where they will take your old drives (any brand) for free and give you a discount coupon you can use for future WD purchases. All in all, I highly recommend this drive for anyone who doesn't need SSD speeds.

I dropped this external hard drive. They could not access (Geek Squad at Best Buy). I had a 3 year warranty-(it's been a while). I was told by the team at the store that I could get a replacement BUT I had to surrender my non functioning hard drive to them to get that credit. What kind of bee ess is that??? I have all kinds of personal info such as documents, social security number, etc...WHY would I give them my non functioning hard drive??? Don't recommend this hard drive. It's crappy. I trusted it and it failed me within a year AND the "best" Best Buy could do, it disappoint me. Not only did I lose all of my documents, family photos, etc...I lost my money on this. Super frustrating! You Best Buy another drive!

I bought this for Time Machine on my wife's iMac. Since it's her business machine, backup is vital. It must be reformatted for the time machine back up, but that's quick and easy enough. Almost automatic, but not quite. I gave her 3TB for Time Machine and 1TB for project storage. The "Mac experts" recommend three times the HD space for time Machine backups. So again, being her business machine that's what I did, just to be sure.So far, it's great. It's silent and small, its powered by USB C, so it just sits out of the way doing its vital job. WD has always been a good brand, and the passport a good product to my experience with them. Recommended.

I purchased my second WD My Passport in July 2022 after a previous one failed after a few years. I thought the occasional failure is inevitable so purchased this one. Nine months later this one has failed. I talked with WD directly who is willing to replace it with a refurbished one and - are you ready - they want the old disk back first. Yes, with all my private info intact and the "promise" to erase the disk and keep my data safe! YIKES. DO NOT BUY WD PRODUCTS IF YOU WANT SAFETY AND SECURITY. Two failures in less than one year and a terrible warranty policy. I'll be buying a different brand going forward.
Their old USB-A style connectors were good, I never had any problems. These new USB-C connector drives have major problems. I work in IT and I have purchased several of them to use at work and have lost 2 due what must be serious design flaws. The failure starts with the drive sometimes not being detected. If you look at the drive, the indicator light will not be on, but you can feel the platter spinning. If you wiggle the USB-C cable then it will most of the time pick it up and it will start working. This is seriously concerning in itself. Well as you can imagine, eventually it just gets worse and worse until eventually no matter how much wiggling you try, or how many cables you swap it out for, it just stops being detected period. From a professional or even personal standpoint you cannot rely upon these drives in their current state.
Had a harrowing experience while using the WD 4TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD. First, there's a WD Discovery app which I installed thinking it's going to help. To anyone who is buying this, please don't install this app. It asks to share app data which if we deny, doesn't install the app. You may check this in related posts in other subreddits. Such a scam. It only installs if you grant permission to share app data and crash info.Second, even after installing, or so I thought, it made my taskbar disappear (going full black). Waited a while and restarted my system.Third, proceeded to uninstall the program. Again at the end, just made my screen go majorly black and unresponsive. Had to restart my system again.
I have had this portable drive for a few months now, and use it weekly for my photography needs from editing to storing images. Although it is not terribly fast (which is why I am now moving onto an SSD), I do not have issues with editing images from the hard drive and loading time for me is no issue.I have also traveled with this hard drive securely tucked in my backpack and I have not run into any issues with the reliability of the files being readable when I plug my hard drive back in.I have found that after editing images off of the hard drive, in order to prevent the hard drive from "being removed without ejecting” (and potentially corrupting files), I have to make sure Photoshop is fully closed (command+Q) and I relaunch Finder, followed by ejecting the ... MoreI have had this portable drive for a few months now, and use it weekly for my photography needs from editing to storing images. This purchase was a big mistake by me. WD used to provide great hardware and software to help individuals safely and securely back up their home systems. No more. While the hardware may be fine, the Acronis software and installation was a nightmare on my new Windows 11 Dell computer. The software installation failed several times with Windows 11error messages about file security, etc. It was only on my 3rd attempt that the software installed even still with the OS error messages. The Acronis backup setup was VERY confusing and not user friendly at all. After some period of time I was able to actually see and understand what dir. and files were being backed up. But then while testing to make sure changed files were backed up, I found you could not even see the backup files on the drive w/o going thru some technical hoops to be able to read the data. I was so disappointed in WD as I had previously used their drives and backup software with great success. Finally, I was so frustrated with this Acronis software and lack of user friendliness, that I chucked the whole drive in the trash and went out and purchased a Seagate 2tb drive and software that works perfectly and is very user friendly. This experience was a total waste of time and money for me.

Four drives. All WD. All dead within 2 years. If you have important data - don't trust WD with it. If that's not bad enough when the drives DO fail, the replacement process is horrendous. You have to mail them the drive. Any sort of data recovery efforts and cost are on you prior to that. There's fees. And they take forever to process replacements. This is why companies should not be allowed to buy up all their competitors and then monopolize what's available in store. Pretty much most of the hard drive aisle (non-SSD) at the Best Buy stores are a subsidiary of Western Digital. Now the drive is taking forever to mount and eventually it won't - so take that as an early warning sign - when you start having issues mounting the drive and you're no longer able to run ... MoreFour drives.
