Amazing performance with pretty good low noise for an Enterprise HDD

This is the first version of WD Gold 16TB which I have it. I have other 6x 1TB in another server. Comparing with Seagate, this one is more-more silent. Also I have only bad experiences with Seagate, just another 4TB IronWolf stated to have issues lately.I'm not saying WD is perfect, but from my experience it has a better AFR (Annualized Failure Rate) than Seagate. I have less WD HDD with failures than Seagate in conditions that I have more WD HDD than Seagate.I recommend it without hesitation.

On sale, a smoking deal. Even otherwise it's good!

I bought two of these when they were on sale for $250 off. I use them in a RAID0 array for a home server I have setup. The drives contain the large, infrequently accessed files the server serves. The drives perform well against all benchmarks I have thrown at it. I have had no data failures in the time I have owned it.I will however issue potential buyers this warning. WARNING: Not made of gold. Even though the drive claims to be gold, it is in fact made with the same non-gold materials just like any other drive. I assume this is because it will take time for the Enterprise Class to take affect. No stars taken away for this... yet!And one last bit of miscommunication about the drive, likely due to my ignorance about drive terminology, and upon which I hold no umbrage: The drive is advertised as 16TB, which of course I and likely any other buyer would assume is a reference to Terry Bradshaw and the Pittsburg Steelers scoring 16 points in their 1974 Superbowl win. It, however, refers to the drive having a capacity of 16 "terabytes."

Premature drive failure
17 October 2024

Bought a 22TB Gold model. Used in NAS data center application. It failed at 12,960 hours in service; a mere fraction of published MTBF of 2,500,000 hours. it cost over $20 in postal and return shipping fees to use the Limited Warranty. The replacement drive then failed at only 168 hours in service, and requires another $20 in postal costs and return shipping fees to obtain a replacement. The sunken costs in warranty costs are now 7% of the product purchase cost. Had I not sunken $600 into buying this product, I'd throw it away. Competitor products of the same storage capacity are still in service more than three years after installation. The products I received are unfit for for "Enterprise Class" applications.

Rock solid beast
2 October 2024

Excellent product. Extremely solid. I ordered the 16TB and upon formatting to NTFS it was down to 14TB. Which is a loss of 2TB. Though this happens to nearly all hard drives (external or internal) due to formatting and system files required to run the beast. I haven't had it too long (maybe 2-3 months). Using it and had no problems. Very quick and its not even noisy. I do hear few clicks upon booting it up. But that's all. And I use it as a workstation close by (not stored away in the closet somewhere) and its very tolerable. Meaning it doesn't disturb me noise wise.Hoping this is rock solid drives from Western Digital (shoutout to all you hard workers here that make these) that if goes long and strong (I'm betting) I'm only using Western Digital upon my next ... MoreExcellent product. I have always used Western Digital in the past. Starting from their Blue lineups and even those remained working years on end. Highly impressed by WD. Thanks! Anyone thinking of buying, don't hesitate. Look up your needed specs and you're fully covered by WD. Thanks again!Quick note: I was always curious as to why the stock photo looked so nice with the big covered gold sticker on the HDD. However, it does not look like the stock photos upon opening the package. It has a smaller gold sticker (unlike the stock photo). I'm guessing for lesser heat dissipation. But still looks good.:)

This is my 4th WD Gold Hard Drive and I have no gripe for them so far. I have used almost all major brands hard drives. I have learned in a hard way what hard drive failure leads to. That's why it's imperative to have backup of a backup. I hope WD Gold drives are reliable as they claim. I'll recommend users prefer enterprise class drives consumer drives or performance drives. As of today(May 6, 2020) price for Gold drive 6TB is lesser than 6TB black HDD. Also, they've best MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) figures on the market today. If you ask me whether It's worth the few extra $$$ then definately. I'm a PC enthusiastic but I don't run my system 24/7. As this product is made by humans, it's susceptible to manufacturing default. I'm a PC enthusiastic but I don't run my system 24/7. As this product is made by humans, it's susceptible to manufacturing default. However, according to my calculation if every thing goes fine, this HDD should last for 15-20 years or at max 30 years for me as my average PC run time is 4.8 hours per day(in the last 6 months). This drive hasn't produced much noise so far nor it get heats up. Literally, it remains much cooler than my Samsung 970 EVO + 2TB NVME. I dumped nearly 2TB of data at a room with a constant ambient temp of 67°F and the drive temperature was 98F. However, all these data is as of today and it's been just 2 days. There's a whole life ahead and will update my review. One of the important thing for users is how much user space we get in 6TB of HDD. So, I got 5.45TB of space in a 6TB HDD. For more don't forget to check my review video above. I'm unable to post picture of this HDD as due to some reason, Home Essentials Direct has disabled picture upload and when I contacted them, I got a really weird response as here "We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. ? During the COVID-19 situation, we are taking steps to protect the health of our team members. As a result, there are some temporary limitations in how you can review products on Home Essentials Direct. We appreciate your understanding." One image upload option is available, I'll update the images as well.

WD can no longer be trusted as a brand
23 October 2024

Over the years I've come to trust WDRed Pro, after this purchase I'm now skeptical of all future purchases.I bought 2, RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, 1 WORKED, 1 DID NOT.This caused me to read many other reviews here and I was shocked to see this has become a common thing in 2024. It looks like WD has taken a turn for the worst with their quality control.EVEN MORE INFURIATING... Their customer service was "apologetic" but also "powerless" to make it right quickly!A brand new drive bad out of the box, bought right from them, and they wouldn't immediately replace it for free, I either had to pay them a non refundable fee, or send it back and wait 8+ weeks for a replacement.Completely unacceptable.

[Rewarded Review] Solid, Fast and Great Warranty
23 July 2024

Building a new pc and decided I wanted a hard drive that can handle a lot of read/writes so I bought this. Ran it through a hard drive test for a number of cycles and came up clean. And the r/w speeds are much faster then my other slower rotational speed drives. If you want a solid drive that will outlast all of your other drives, this is the one to get.And as always B&H shipped all the items fast and were well packed. Highly recommend them.

i really dont give negative but the Negetive i gave here due to the way posted the HDDs, it was completely disastrous. these are HDDs not SSD and they were wobbling in the big space of its box. these parcel guys through the boxes here and there and we dont know how many times they had hard jerks on throughing and while traveling. i need to put these in Server and the level of trust on these you know where it will go. these could have filled with at least newspapsers so it would not wobble.
