I bought three of these WD Red 1TB drives for a RAID5 configuration after months of research and waiting for the best prices. I have primarily used Desktop Seagate drives in my Home Server that acts as an HTTP/FTP/NAS/Squid/Dansguardian running CentOS and mdadm for over three years; some even with s.m.a.r.t. errors and bad sectors. The performance was terrible ( obviously, I do ask a lot from my servers ) and I decided it was time to upgrade. I pulled these puppies from their fairly well packaged boxes, let them adjust to ambient room temperature, and took pictures of the serial numbers. I immediately registered them with WD warranty website. After they had adjusted, I ran WD's bootdisk and did full scan's on each drive. It took about 8hrs for three drives. I already had a consumer drive running CentOS in my four port SATA so I installed the three RED's and built my RAID5 with mdadm and XFS filesystem. I chose XFS because it has customisations that are great for software RAID's, and performance was rated highly running on Linux. After that was complete, I set up samba and started backing up my data. At first my speeds were not so great, around 20MB/s. So I did some homework and found these options in my smb.conf that DOUBLED my speed: socket options = SO_RCVBUF=131072 SO_SNDBUF=131072 TCP_NODELAY WOW! Now we're cookin'! I get anywhere from 40-46MB/s write speed, and the same read speed over 1Gbps lan. Also, I compared my two servers side-by-side (same makes and models running same CentOS 6.3 and samba) and as I watched the drive led's during transfers from the old server to the new one, I noticed how much more the old drives had to work ( reads/writes ) compared to these RED's. My speculation the reason they didn't have to work as hard is the RED's have 64MB cache, spin at slower speeds with IntelliPower (about 5900rpm), and have less agressive head parking. It was pretty neat to watch my old drives work like dogs, and these new RED's didn't even break a sweat! I'm happy with their performance, the three year warranty, but I will have to update after three years on their durability. As of right now, I am a very happy customer! ~ J.S.

I bought a pair of these with just a few thought in mind. Speed and Redundancy. I have had hundreds of drives in my hands through the years; of all sizes, makes and models... WD makes some of the best drives (green excluded) on the planet. And the these new Red NAS drives or awesome! They meshed seamlessly with an older NAS sever stepped down to SATA2 and mirrored no problem. The variable speed keeps your power consumption and heat down. But when you need the speed and your server gets tasked they really pick up the game and just GO! I hardly ever hear them, even when they are fully engaged. The sever fan might come on 3-4 times an hour. When it does you'll never hear these drives. So far there hasn't been one hiccup.

Pros: Capacity is very good and I believe about the largest my NAS model will support.Cons: How can you rate reliability when it has just been installed? Two previous exact same model drives failed, the second after I had already purchased and had the failed drive exchanged, hence 5 rating. Also why the overall rating has been reduced as I am now afraid I could have issues in the future. Hopefully not!

I purchased 2x 1TB RED NAS Drives just over a month ago and created a RAID 1 Mirror. Today I was migrating a good amount of data to this RAID 1 array and 1 of the drives went offline. After reading many reviews, this appears to be a common thing with this drive and only resolution is to replace the drive under warranty. I contacted the 24x7 customer support and they offered to replace the drive, no questions asked. Than they looked to see if they have any in stock to ship out to me for my replacement. Response was they have none in stock with no ETA of getting any in. Do they really not have ANY of these very popular Hard Drives in stock?? This is the actual manufacturer! Using win8.1 with Asrock MB. Used Disk Management to format drive, apparently it is shipped unformatted. I went to the WD website and used Acronis to clone my existing hard drive onto my new WD red. Changed boot priority and bingo! I had previously used Acronis years ago and could not get anything to work. They have improved this software vastly. Nice to be able to have a second bootable drive just in case. I might get a couple more of these to do the same with all the house computers.
Pros: Quick and quietCons: I have purchased these disks before. Two failed from the same batch. One within a year and the second within two years. However, they are guaranteed for three years and the process of getting a replacement works well. The second disk failed completely. The first did not fail but was replaced with an increasing number of bad sectors.
NewEgg shipped promptly, I received them in a couple of days after placing the order. Drives were individually boxed and well protected for shipping. They have only been installed for a couple of weeks but have had zero problems or issues. I expect these will be just as reliable as previous WD drives I have purchased.
I have used WD drives for 20 years and believe it or not, have NEVER had a bad drive. However, I have always used BLACK drives, or their equivalent. My problem here is that I noticed that whether you have a WD10EFRX or WD20EFRX RED Drive, you're seeing THE SAME reviews. Now I'm not sure WHICH drive are failing....or are BOTH MODELS GOING BAD? The only reason I was considering a non-Black drive is because I have a WD Sharespace that can ONLY use WD drives. It came with 4-1TB GREEN Drives and I want to increase the size to 2TB and "thought" these RED 2TB drives might be a good replacement. Because of these reviews, I'm now rethinking that.
I used this for an ESXi server, to host several VM's, FTP, file services and shares, and a domain for my home uses. As well as terminal services for remote usage. I came home, two days ago, and all of my VM's were unrecognized (Inaccessible) via VSphere management. I go to my server alcove, and reboot the machine. Lo and behold upon POST I get S.M.A.R.T. error on screen while booting. (Keep in mind that I did test this drive before putting it to use, and no bad blocks.) I bought this because I was hoping it would be reliable for my uses. I won't be buying any more of these until they get their QA issues resolved. Overall, I give the drive 5 stars for performing as expected. I give the QA no stars.
Been a loyal WD fanboy for a long time. EVERY disk drive manufacturer, over the long term, has had "the drive from hell" line of products. The most memorable was the IBM DeskStar - which was renamed "DeathStar" on the 'web. It turned out that the larger capacity versions had the highest failure rates. I believe that the WD Red series will have a similar entry in the history of "Drives From Hell" - if anyone ever writes one. Recommendation: Avoid the Red line until: a) WD publicly admits "we have a problem" b) resolves the issues Call the Red 24-hr hotline (on a speaker phone) and see how long the wait time is. When it goes down from, currently, an average of 1-hour, you'll know the "issue" is resolved! :) Al
