Got two of these, one for my recent ASUS ROG Strix laptop and my wife's couple year older model laptop of the same. She has PCIe 3.0, so she didn't get the full speeds that I get on my PCIe 4.0 laptop, as was expected. That's fine as this drive will move into new laptops down the road with its massive storage size, ease of install, crazy speeds, and lack of any issues. Definitely recommend this drive as it is absolutely a game changer.

I had this SN850X setup as a boot drive with Windows 10 desktop and I kept the PC up to date (drivers included). I always go through the standard shutdown process every time and one day it just couldn't boot to Windows. The drive no longer showed up in BIOS and using a external enclosure with the drive in it was unrecognizable. I contacted WD customer service and went through troubleshooting with them and came to the conclusion that the drive was dead (most likely firmware corruption). The drive was under warranty but they wanted it sent back to them with no physical damage. Great value for the price.
15 March 2023

Works great once its set up correctly in the bios. Installed alongside the oem wd_black m.2 and used the included acronis subscription to move my OS over to the sn850x. I had to reset the cmos to get it to boot, and had to reformat the original drove to stop windows from reverting my boot order. I was initially disappointed in my benchmark scores before realizing that the pci lanes are intertwined in a way that both drives are affected. Basically, it made my original drive appear much faster than normal and the sn850x slower than advertised in testing. In real-world use, its fast and stable though. The dashboard app is also nice to have as well. Mine is mounted behind the GPU with no heatsink and never reaches above 60° at full load.

This was my first NVMe SSD purchase, and I could not be happier! It's been running great, and my temps are great too! I was surprised how fast Windows 11 installed on this thing. It had those files copied over and installing in hardly no time. I've installed Windows many times, but never seen it install that fast. No issues with gaming. Games load pretty fast. Drive installation was easy. My motherboard had an included beefy heatsink, so I did not have to purchase one. So keep in mind, you don't need to buy a heatsink if your motherboard already includes a decent one.Yeah, so far all is good and hoping it stays this way! Noticeable speedup compared to PCIe 3.0 QLC
9 February 2023

I upgraded to the 2 TB SN850X from a same-sized PCIe 3.0 SSD from another vendor that used QLC flash. I thought that any modern SSD is fast enough by any reasonable standard, but I actually noticed a big difference launching programs, installing games, and transferring files to/from my NAS. My old drive would get bogged down and show high latency in Task Manager, while this model blows through everything. The heatsink is nice since I’ve had issues getting 3rd party heatsinks to attach securely and stay attached, their elastics would melt over time with heat. That said, I had to remove the motherboard’s included heatsink and do some mechanical finagling.

Perfect match for PS5 4TB was the right choice.

I ordered the 4TB WD BLACK SN850X specifically to be installed in a PS5 for expanding the internal storage. Really glad I got this WD black SSD drive
7 September 2024

At first I ordered the black SSD with a heat sink attached. I looked really well made but alas it was too bulky to fit in my Dell XPS 15 laptop. I had some problem with tech support not understanding the problem, by in the end I was able to return it and order the same SSD drive without the heat sink. I did order a much inferior one from amazon which fit perfectly. I am really glad I did, as the drive read and write speed is exceptionally fast. Just what I was wanting in a second D drive that I keep all of my files on.

Solid Performance of this Solid Device
25 March 2024

I've purchased a few of the "No moving parts" devices from Western Digital these last few years, and this WD_Black (w/ heatsink) stands out as one of my favorite and best purchases. It installled flawlessly, has performed flawlessly, and I continue to trust its ability to continue to perform in this manner in my main gaming rig.I recommend buying direct from the WD store as their prices and shipping policies align so well (if not better) that the other available sources, and by doing this, I feel I'm directly helping WD succeed in the marketplace.

Nice boost overall in snappiness with Windows 11, didn't have much lag before but now there is definitely none. Load times for games is noticeably faster, maybe 20-30% perceptually.
