I knew it was a datacenter drive when I bought it and was expecting it to be noisier than desktop drives. It turned out to be just as quiet as my two 8 TB helium drives. To date, the loudest drive I own is another 10 TB white label drive that is very noisy, unreliable and slow.. that's because it's an SMR drive. I bought this 10 TB drive specifically because it is NOT an SMR drive. It's also the fastest mech drive I ever owned. I bought this to replace a bad experience with the above mentioned SMR drive that was disconnecting after long read / write operations. If you're looking for an excellent PMR drive, this is the best one you can get. Do yourself a favor and avoid SMR drives (sometimes called "archive" drives).. they aren't very reliable and the last one only ... MoreI knew it was a datacenter drive when I bought it and was expecting it to be noisier than desktop drives. I highly recommend this WD Gold 10 TB drive.

This HDD is highly recommended for 'prosumers', a term for consumers who wants professional features in a drive (or other product). The WD Gold, a true professional series model, can be used to replace a HDD in a single drive computer, response will be much better than drives installed by the OEM, or one who builds their own & wants to upgrade (or use these from the beginning). Can be also used as a Data drive along with a SSD (SATA or NVMe). Keep the OS on SSD, data on the WD Gold. Using these for backup would be a total waste of the WD Gold, better to use drives laying around, or the one(s) this model will replace. No vibration whatsoever when installed properly, rubber/silicon washers a recommendation, what came with my Fractal Design cases. Have ran these for close to a month, if there were going to be issues, I'd know by now. While I could write a book about the many positives about this drive, purchased two (one each for two PC's), I'll spare the details & just say these are indeed an noticeable improvement over the several WD RE4's I have (all purchased new), as well as a Caviar Black. Note that all of these drives has the same warranty, yet the performance & overall value of the WD Gold is better than any other HDD's that I own, and have quite a collection. Get these while you can, the purchase won't be regretted, and last but not least, Western Digital will take care of you should an issue arise in a short timeframe. Enjoy the WD Gold, just as I am!

I have installed and used many of these drives. Not 1 has been DOA and several have been going over a decade (Including Black HDD). Only problem is that both times I got a warranty replacement (failing smart-but still working) they replaced them with lesser drives. Granted they were close to the end of warranty, but a blue drive is NOT a replacement for an enterprise drive. I haven't had problems with the RMA process and turn around was fast, just not equal replacements.

I tried every which way to have LINUX find GRUB to boot the OS. Absolutely no such luck or is the drive incompatible with LINUX. The drive itself is working fine as a slave, but as soon as you expect it to run as master for LINUX, it does not provide boot information that is needed to start the OS. I tried LINUX MINT (based on UBUNTU) I tried DEBIAN LINUX the original. I installed LINUX MINT several times without as reported failure, including the GRUB install. On reboot, nothing! The boot sector or whatever data might have been written to it, runs right into the digital darkness of HDD space. Some Grub part was written to the drive, but it is very useless since it produces an error "attempt to read or write outside of disk hd0" As far as I am concerned, all data ... MoreI tried every which way to have LINUX find GRUB to boot the OS. Why trying to read or write outside the drive e.g. air bubble or? I wound up to take a 500GB from another computer that was running as slave. Installed the LINUX MINT without a single problem. The 1TB GOLD wound up as a slave in previous mentioned computer as storage. It seems more and more to me, that some OS manufacturer pay hardware manufacturer to make it very difficult to get their hardware working with LINUX. Sad, sad, almost like the white house.
Bought a 22TB Gold model. Used in NAS data center application. It failed at 12,960 hours in service; a mere fraction of published MTBF of 2,500,000 hours. it cost over $20 in postal and return shipping fees to use the Limited Warranty. The replacement drive then failed at only 168 hours in service, and requires another $20 in postal costs and return shipping fees to obtain a replacement. The sunken costs in warranty costs are now 7% of the product purchase cost. Had I not sunken $600 into buying this product, I'd throw it away. Competitor products of the same storage capacity are still in service more than three years after installation. The products I received are unfit for for "Enterprise Class" applications.
Excellent product. Extremely solid. I ordered the 16TB and upon formatting to NTFS it was down to 14TB. Which is a loss of 2TB. Though this happens to nearly all hard drives (external or internal) due to formatting and system files required to run the beast. I haven't had it too long (maybe 2-3 months). Using it and had no problems. Very quick and its not even noisy. I do hear few clicks upon booting it up. But that's all. And I use it as a workstation close by (not stored away in the closet somewhere) and its very tolerable. Meaning it doesn't disturb me noise wise.Hoping this is rock solid drives from Western Digital (shoutout to all you hard workers here that make these) that if goes long and strong (I'm betting) I'm only using Western Digital upon my next ... MoreExcellent product. I have always used Western Digital in the past. Starting from their Blue lineups and even those remained working years on end. Highly impressed by WD. Thanks! Anyone thinking of buying, don't hesitate. Look up your needed specs and you're fully covered by WD. Thanks again!Quick note: I was always curious as to why the stock photo looked so nice with the big covered gold sticker on the HDD. However, it does not look like the stock photos upon opening the package. It has a smaller gold sticker (unlike the stock photo). I'm guessing for lesser heat dissipation. But still looks good.:)
This is my 4th WD Gold Hard Drive and I have no gripe for them so far. I have used almost all major brands hard drives. I have learned in a hard way what hard drive failure leads to. That's why it's imperative to have backup of a backup. I hope WD Gold drives are reliable as they claim. I'll recommend users prefer enterprise class drives consumer drives or performance drives. As of today(May 6, 2020) price for Gold drive 6TB is lesser than 6TB black HDD. Also, they've best MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) figures on the market today. If you ask me whether It's worth the few extra $$$ then definately. I'm a PC enthusiastic but I don't run my system 24/7. As this product is made by humans, it's susceptible to manufacturing default. I'm a PC enthusiastic but I don't run my system 24/7. As this product is made by humans, it's susceptible to manufacturing default. However, according to my calculation if every thing goes fine, this HDD should last for 15-20 years or at max 30 years for me as my average PC run time is 4.8 hours per day(in the last 6 months). This drive hasn't produced much noise so far nor it get heats up. Literally, it remains much cooler than my Samsung 970 EVO + 2TB NVME. I dumped nearly 2TB of data at a room with a constant ambient temp of 67°F and the drive temperature was 98F. However, all these data is as of today and it's been just 2 days. There's a whole life ahead and will update my review. One of the important thing for users is how much user space we get in 6TB of HDD. So, I got 5.45TB of space in a 6TB HDD. For more don't forget to check my review video above. I'm unable to post picture of this HDD as due to some reason, Home Essentials Direct has disabled picture upload and when I contacted them, I got a really weird response as here "We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. ? During the COVID-19 situation, we are taking steps to protect the health of our team members. As a result, there are some temporary limitations in how you can review products on Home Essentials Direct. We appreciate your understanding." One image upload option is available, I'll update the images as well.
Hello, can I somewhere download and install a new FirmWare for the WD Gold WD 18TB, WD181KRYZ ?? I bought it, but my NAS (Qnap TS-1232XU-RP-4G) is probably incompatible with them. It is unfortunatelly freezing with this drive 18TB connected..Or what do you recommend to me? What is doing the Jumper on the disk? Is it usable for me, for some eg. some capacity/speed limitation?? Thank you.
I bought a few of these 1tb drives for photo and video editing. Just after 30-days passed (literally 32 days), one of the drives is making a horrendous "Zzzzmmmmm" sound when it spins down. It's not an SATA port or RAID controller (yes tested all of those). I've been building PC's long enough to know its the bearings on platter spindle. It passes Lifeguard SMART testing, but clearly its already at EOL...a month after buying it. I bought these because of they are supposed to be Enterprise Grade built tough enough to sustain reads and writes constantly, with a high MBTF rating. I've NEVER had a problem with a WD HDD, and that's all I've used for the last 15+ years. I've NEVER had a problem with a WD HDD, and that's all I've used for the last 15+ years. Extremely disappointed I paid a premium, for a premium product, that went defective just over a month of ownership. I'm reluctant to try to RMA, because I know the time and effort involved. I've also read how stories about how WD will send you a "refurbished/recertified" replacement instead of a new drive. My time itself is a premium, I don't want someone else's "repaired" warranty return HDD, and considering just not bothering and instead buying a new, competitors, HDD. I still recommend WD drives, this is the only one I've ever had that started to die a premature death. I'm just extremely disappointed that a product touted as being superior to their other products managed to be bad.
Building a new pc and decided I wanted a hard drive that can handle a lot of read/writes so I bought this. Ran it through a hard drive test for a number of cycles and came up clean. And the r/w speeds are much faster then my other slower rotational speed drives. If you want a solid drive that will outlast all of your other drives, this is the one to get.And as always B&H shipped all the items fast and were well packed. Highly recommend them.
