The smoker box worked great. We filled it with soaked wood chips and put it on our gas grill and in a little time we had smoke that flavored our Pork shoulder wonderfully. It is easy to use, the steel construction is sturdy. It cleans up easy (after it cools off!!)

For hefty price, this box is not as good as it could be. Problem is, that there are holes at the bottom of the box. Too much airflow = flare ups and fires. It works better when bottom is covered with tin foil and then put directly on flavorizer bars. Dry chips win hands down.Weber, listen to me! Make a better version! No holes at the bottom, adjustable vents on the cover, V-shape bottom that it sits on flavorizer bars… I’ll run to buy it if you make it!

I have used my smoker box 4 times in various configurations and overall, I am not very pleased nor would I recommend this product to a friend. As several other reviewers have noted, the metal is thin and it has warped significantly; when I have the box on the grill, it warps so much I can't open the lid. It is also difficult to control how vigorously it smokes. There are as many holes in the bottom of the pan as on the top, and twice now my chips have gone from smoking pleasantly to straight up burning inferno. This has happened with both dry and soaked chips, as well as pellets (good luck trying pellets - too many large holes). Try spraying the burning chips with water when you can't open the lid! I don't have an alternative to recommend, can only say I would not ... MoreI have used my smoker box 4 times in various configurations and overall, I am not very pleased nor would I recommend this product to a friend. I used this product to smoke a Turkey on a gas grill for the first time yesterday 11/25/20. I followed the correct instructions in preparation, (pre-heated grill and soaking chips, Cook's Hickory wood chips). After about 35 minuets the chips begin to smoke. I turned off all of the burners, placed the smoker in the center of the grill and the covered Turkey on one side. After about 1 hour I noticed a tremendous amount of smoke. The entire smoker was on fire. I'm glad the burners were turned off. The chips had dried out and ignited the entire smoker box.
I bought the smoker box about 6 months ago and have used it many times. I wanted to smoke fish occasionally and didn’t want another appliance that I would only use once in a while. The smoker box is the perfect solution. It is easy to use and a variety of wood chips are readily available. Smoking fish is a little tricky, as you need enough heat to light the chips and create the smoke, but not too much heat to over cook the fish. A little trial and error is required, but once you get it, the results are terrific. I light one of the three burners and put the smoker box filled with soaked wood chips over that burner. I put the fish on the other side of the grill. Smoking for 45 minutes to an hour usually does the trick. I highly recommend this product. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that managing the heat is a little more difficult than having a dedicated smoker.
I just bought this smoker box, and echo the comments of some other commentators:1. Odd rivet / spindles with a lot of extra play in them attaches lid to the box. I guess they build in this much play to avoid warping & binding up during heating.(I cooked a pork tenderloin low & slow at about 240-250℉. My grill is a Weber Genesis Gold Model C from 2004, with three side-to-side burners. I just used one of the two grates and placed the smoke boxes directly on top of the Flavorizer Bars. If the grate is slid back and forth on its tracks, the smoke boxes both fit neatly under the grate while resting on the Flavorizer Bars. The applewood chips caught on fire, even though I had only one burner (the front one) turned on. Despite #1., above, the box / lid warped, I guess because it is (thinner) stainless steel, as opposed to my Brinkmann cast iron smoker box. So I had a difficult time opening up the warped lid of the HOT Weber smoke box to add more chips to replace the ones that caught on fire, while the chips in the Brinkmann smoke box, soaked the same amount of time, hardly smoked at all! The Brinkmann cast iron box was positioned with its length over front burner, while the Weber stainless steel box was positioned with its short side over the front burner, in order to avoid the chips catching on fire and keep the box from getting too hot.3. It was an odd, frustrating smoking experience. I am not without barbecue skills, and I smoked this pork tenderloin two days ago, and haven't been back to the grill to inspect the Weber box now and see if it has returned to its original shape and can be filled easily with more wood chips.Summary: This box may get too hot too easily. It calls for well-soaked chips, several hours or overnight. And you may not be able to refill the box conveniently once you've started cooking.Would not recommend this product yet.
Not sure how this is failing anyone...This is a great band-aid style solution for those that haven't, can't or won't purchase a traditional smoker. I've had mine for 3 seasons total and have not had any problems with it not producing smoke, warping or any other negative attribute that I've read here. It works as advertised, and does a great job considering how versatile it has to be. (Perhaps perusing the instructions could help some of the negative folks succeed where they are failing)It's even good if you do own a smoker (like me) and just want to quickly do up some hamburgers over charcoal and still have that extra (wood flavor of your choice) nuance without having to invest the time.I bought one of these (after using mine successfully and liking it) for my ... MoreNot sure how this is failing anyone...This is a great band-aid style solution for those that haven't, can't or won't purchase a traditional smoker. It's one of those things that you didn't know you couldn't live without until you've had one yourself. You just don't know what you don't know. So, be careful... You may not want to eat grilled meat without the bonus-ized smoky flavor ever again.I am a real humanoid living in the northeast US that genuinely owns this product. If mine were to ever fail, or get lost I'd be out getting another one the same day.
The smoker box is much larger than past ones that I have bought. Now I don't have secondary makeshift smoker going. Also, it has holes on the bottom which I think helps with the speed and generation of the smoke. I like the flat bottom, no issue resting on the grate. My previous one is V shaped and worked on my old grate but not the Weber replacement one that I recently bought. My one complaint is that there are two hinges for opening the top. One of them actually popped out when I first pulled the box our of the packaging and opened the top. Very cheap, I just didn't want to spend the time returning it and I don't expect the other side to last that long. I do wonder how long and how much grilling the box itself will last over time since the thickness is less and ... MoreThe smoker box is much larger than past ones that I have bought. This is a great smoker box in my opinion. I have used different boxes over the years on my Weber gas grill in order to get that great wood smoke taste. This is definitely the best one yet. The unique hole design apparently allows smouldering to occur more readily than just round holes. After several uses, this box produces 2 to 3 times as much volume of smoke from apple wood chips than I have seen in my previous boxes. Have not had any warpage problems with the box as others have mentioned.I set the box on top of my flavorizer bars, fill half full of dry chips, spray generously with water from a plant sprayer type squeeze bottle to wet all the chips, close the lid and replace the cooking grid over it. After about 4 to 6 min of high heat, smoke is rolling out. I turn the burners back to low, or even turn one off if lower heat is needed, and get up to 30 minutes of thick smoke. Placement of the box at the rear or side doesn't seem to affect the amount of smoke produced. I just like to keep it away from directly underneath the food in order to keep it cleaner, or to allow me place the box over a burner unit that I can turn on or off depending on how much heat is needed. I like to remove the heat from below the box if possible in order to allow the chips to smoulder and smoke for a longer time than if the burner below them is always on, burning them up more than just letting them smoke. This is a real winner for me!
I've always used another brand of smoker box in my old Spirit e210. Never had an issue,I figured though,New grill, let's get a new box. This is the first I've been disappointed in a Weber product in my life. There is just too much airflow with this design. The recommended time to soak wood chips is30 minutes,I always soak longer,at least 2 hours. Even that was no help. Placed the box on top of the grate as Weber recommends. The chips dried out and caught fire. The burner was at the lowest possible setting possible, the disaster left an ashy mess in my new Genesis II on only my second time using it. I've smoked on my old Spirit for over 10 years with no problem. Just don't buy it, you can get2 of the brand i used prior ( and going back to) for still $5 less than this. ... MoreI've always used another brand of smoker box in my old Spirit e210.
