I do a lot of video editing... a LOT. My PC's 2 TB hard drive was constantly filling up and as a result I have been struggling to remove enough files to have sufficient space for more editing, and have over a dozen external hard drives, in many cases with redundant files.It was time for an upgrade, and the solution was to add a second internal drive, this time a whopping 4 TB of data, to the PC. Keep in mind two things, I've been a tech for over 40 years, and if there is a BETTER hard drive, I will pay the extra couple dollars for it rather than trying to save money by buying good enough, with hard drives, that does not exist. Second, I've had a brand new WD Black for laptop come bad in the box, so again, spend the money on better rather than recovery of data later. VERY IMPORTANT if the backup is going to be external (both of these were internal backups) I buy a laptop drive case and still buy these and mount them. I NEVER use a ready made external storage ... Device came new in decent packaging, direct from Western Digital. However, I noticed immediately that it was the EZAZ version which is SMR (Single Magnetic Recording) version. This means it is significantly slower writing large files than other Blue products I have owned. I was just using for storage so even though I was disappointed, I tried to use it. The drive would not initialize. It would throw IO errors across multiple known good power and sata connections. Shady to list it as a Blue product when its obviously a sub par model, this means I can no longer trust the companies own performance branding to give me the product I want from ANY vendor. Plnety and i mean PLENTY of storage. I store Starcraft and League of legends and tons of photos and apps so i can run it off there. The only severely annoying bit is having to sign into it everytime i turn on the computer. It has a passcode you have to setup to access it. Although afterwards, it just has you have to doible click it to open it everytime you log in so you can access whats on it. Wish you didn’t have to if it stayed connected to the same computer or laptop. But otherwise its good.
I have no complaints with the product thus far. I purchased it after the stock HDD died in my laptop. It's been running splendidly since I installed it (about three weeks ago).So far, so good. I don't see any reason against buying it if your laptop has a failing HDD - but every other component is still running close to when you first took it out of the box. Luckily, all the additional infrastructure of my four-year-old laptop is in stellar condition.It was either spend $40 for the HDD swap that I can do myself, or buy a new laptop for $350-plus with downgraded specifications from my current laptop. The other option was sending the laptop back to the manufacturer for over $200. They would replace my HDD with a refurbished HDD. It's not cost-effective.
my lap top is falling apart a piece here and there, after i took it in to Best Buy , geek squad , becuase i was having issues with it powering on. had appointment to take it in for them to check, and after they check i was told that my hard drive needed to be replaced. so they did replace it ; and after a few months it started falling apart piece here a piece there. now i have black tape holding it together on side its not tight as it should be and the black molding around the eternet port andthe usb port has broken off and the rubber seal on back of laptop keeps falling out ... '' so i dont what they did they should not have done or should hve done. who ever they appointed to work on my computer '' i so regret ever taking it to them ;; now im really not satisfied , ... On this particular drive, it appears that the logical addresses begin and end at *other than* the physical edge and center of the platter. This means the very fastest access, always from the edge of the platter due to the highest areal density of sectors given a constant RPM, is from 903GiB to 931.5GiB instead of from 0GiB. (badblocks w/ dstat made it obvious.) Since that's where the bulk of whatever OS's files usually end up, it's often nice to have them getting read out the most quickly, which is not really possible now unless I play silly games with the partition table and mount points. I'm looking for a way to genuinely & severely low-level format and (maybe?) semi-automatically restore the boundaries of the user data area but that's not turning up much, so far. ... It's weird that on the first badblocks pass, it started out rather slow, around 60MB/s-- like the way it would have written to the *end* of the disk-- and then it picked up after a few percent, to a more appropriate ~120MB/s. It made me think that the end and the beginning were swapped on the platter-- rather than shifted and wrapped around-- but now access from 0GiB is as fast as you'd expect near the edge, so I don't know what was going on there. Maybe the firmware was busy doing background things on the disk with its first few minutes of prime time. Anyway, I went back and made sure-- no, I didn't watch the armature jump to the edge of the disk, I just watched the rate jump from 54MB/s to 120MB/s at 903GiB several times and that's the simplest way I could explain it. It is as weird as it is reproducible. I guess I ought to sign up at a WD forum now, woohoo
