What If? by Randall Munroe: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd hypothetical Questions

(184 reviews)

Randall Munroe left NASA in 2005 to start up his hugely popular site XKCD, 'a web comic of romance, sarcasm, math and language' which offers a witty take on the world of science and geeks. In pursuit of answers, Munroe runs computer simulations, pores over stacks of declassified military research memos, solves differential equations, and consults with nuclear reactor operators. Far more than a book for geeks, 'What If?' explains the laws of science in operation in a way that every intelligent reader will enjoy and feel much the smarter for having read.

It arrived in really good condition . There were some minor damages that weren’t noticeable .In the other hand ; the book is really interesting , however can be in some cases complex to understand as it has scientific terminology .

Excellent book - great quality product, great content

The questions are outlandish, even hilarious. Those who are out of the box inquisitive will enjoy. The answers are impressive and accompanied by illustrations and math formulas.

Great Read
9 June 2021

What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe is a fun read, with outrageous scenarios and real-life science applied to them. It combines humour and science together well, with little comic illustrations.

If there's a third, I would totally pick it up!

Randall Munroe's previous books "Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words" and "What If?" are brilliant reads for anyone with curiosity at heart, and he continues this with "What If? 2". Reading this combines the curiosity of a child with the analysis of a scientist, and these two worlds colliding (which is appropriate since some of these questions either involve or cause worlds to collide) makes for great reading and understanding.

Not very good.

The book looked new. The text was not as interesting as I thought it'd be, I was disappointed. It was also complex reading.

Ridiculous questions, serious analysis, absolutely brilliant
12 November 2022

Having read Randall Munroe's XKCD comics and "What If?" blog previously, I thought I would give this a go, and I do not regret my decision at all.The books have content that the website does not, but it does not dissapoint on the thoughts or the laughs. Have to share this with my niece and nephew (might be a fun Christmas present).

The best kind of book

This is one of the funniest, nerdiest reads I've ever bought - endlessly clever, endlessly silly, endlessly readable. Highly recommended. I've started my teenage kid on it too.

The best way to spend an afternoon!

The book is exactly what it says: silly questions answered as though they were serious questions. The responses are full of cheeky little comments, as well as thoughtful information, and they take even the most simple question further than you would have thought to ask. I particularly enjoy sitting with friends and taking turns reading from it. A great icebreaker. Whenever there's an awkward silence I just pick up the book and turn to a random page and say "Did you know...." It never fails to start a conversation up, with much laughter.

My husband loves this book. He has not put it down since receiving it. If anyone likes XKCD, they will enjoy this book. (They probably already knew that, though.)
