Very pleased overall with this handwarmer. I considered an electronic type but decided they are too bulky. I suffer from Raynauds and need something small enough to slip inside my gloves occasionally. There is a knack to getting it going. The instructions are not clear enough and I considered knocking off a star for that. At first, in frustration, I made the mistake of putting some fuel on the 'wool' in the catalyst - it works but I then found out that this reduces its life. This is the technique I use. Contrary to the instructions, you don't need to remove the black bung; just stick the filler spout in and it will open a slit to allow the fuel in. Then apply a flame to the catalytic element whilst inverting it slightly. If you use a match, it will blacken it. Use a ... MoreVery pleased overall with this handwarmer. The instructions say a few seconds, which is misleading; at least ten is what's needed and wait to see the 'wool' glowing. It should then take and get really warm. After running it in, a half dose of fuel should last all day for at least six hours. This does vary for reasons that are unclear. Occasionally, it won't take if you rush the ignition process. The pouch is crucial as it will be way too hot to handle without it but it could be a bit more robust.

A great product which I came across by buying another. I have been a Zippo fan for years so when I fancied a hand warmer I bought a Zippo one. What a load of rubbish! It was difficult to full, no proper filling well, and difficult to light. Even when it was lit, lasted about 10% of the time it should before going out. A Google search lead me to the Whitby one. Firstly, the quality of manufacture is brilliant, feels a proper weighted item with both lid and burner fitting securely. The chrome finish picks up every fingerprint, but I love polishing it so no bad thing! Easy to fill with a separate filling spout and no drip rubber filer. Dead easy to light, and about 10 seconds on each side of the burner will see it reliably lit for hours. It gets to about 60c so too hot ... MoreA great product which I came across by buying another. A fabulous hand warmer, everything the Zippo wasn't.

Was recommended this by a friend so thought I would give it a try. So far I've only fired it up once and being honest it does takes a bit to get it going. I filled it up to the max level (12 hours) and tried lighting it....it took about 5 mins to get it going however this was expected and apparently it takes a few burns to get it cured. Once it was going it worked a dream I was very impressed with how quickly it warmed up and it didn't take long to bring my pocket to a nice comfortable temperature. I haven't tried this out yet on my fishing trip which is what I've got this for however on this first trial I have high hopes for it.

I bought this to keep some feeling in my hands when playing golf in the freezing weather. Was a little tricky to light the first couple of times but once it had had some fluid in a couple of times it worked a treat. I only half filled it which reportedly lasts for 6 hours. Even at my standard of golf was plenty long enough. It was still lovely and warm at the end of my round. It's a great little thing and the filler makes it easy to pour the fluid in without spillage. If you're looking for a hand warmer I can wholly recommend this one.
I purchased the Whitby hand warmer to see if it competes with the Zippo. I tried different fuels to see that it made any difference, and further tired it several times. The look and feel of the unit is the same as the Zippo. I was under the understanding that when you close the top cover it would click or snap closed unlike the Zippo, but it was the same. As for burning or heating time, I was a bit disappointed since it did not give the 12 hour burning time, it was more like 7~8 ours. As I mentioned, I tried different fuels but the results were the same. I purchased 3 Whitby & Co hand warmers therefore my tests were very accurate on each.
Once these hand warmers are "run in" they are superb. However at first they require a lot of coaxing to work for any length of time., I should explain i have 3 of them for our shooting party and with each one I have had to take 3-4 days to get them up to the full day warming status. That is follow the instruction and give time for the fuel to soak in properly then I add ahalf measure of fuel as a top up, This will usuall give 2-3 hours of heat. I will then give a full load of fuel and use again this time i tend to get about 6-7 hours of heat. The next top up and use will give you a full days heat Worth it definitely nothing worse than cold hands when out shooting S & F Y-Geo.
Sorry but you need to read the instructions. It says that you need to use the warmer several times before a full12 hours and longer will be achieved. The reason is the fibers need to take on more of the fuel. Once you do this then the burner will last in my case around 15 hours. It is much easier to fill than the zippo and you do not have to keep removing the burner, the most delicate and easiest part to damage. I have a number of zippo and have to keep replacing the burners long before I should because they get damaged with removing them but on the Whitby this is not the case. Apart from the filler hole and the burner there cases are the same. I would strongly recommend this product. Just save a lighter fuel can and keep removing the lid and filling that to fill the warmers.
Great product. Takes some getting used to when filling up. First couple of times it doesn't stay hot for long, but after that it will stay hot for 12 hours. This is the 3rd time I have bought the product over the years. Be careful filling it up with lighter petrol.
First class item. Bought a couple of Zippo,s. Whitby best. Always buy British.
The instructions suggest this is an easy, straightforward piece of kit to use; at first use it isn't. Filling and lighting for the first couple of times was not straightforward and it took two fills to get enough lighter fuel absorbed into the filler material to enable it to light. In frustration I poured fuel straight onto the catalyst material - don't! It damages very easily and costs money for a replacement. When in use (finally) it doesn't give 12hrs burn time - no matter how much fuel you put in. The best I got was 8hrs and the worst about 4-5hrs. I didn't try to refill it whilst it was in use. Heat output was excellent - hence getting the 'recommend' tick, but it is a hydrocarbon-burning fuel so the fabric pouch and your pocket gets wet in use, part of the ... MoreThe instructions suggest this is an easy, straightforward piece of kit to use; at first use it isn't. It really does get too hot to use without the included pouch. Quality of components is excellent, nice finish.
