This masking fluid is very easy to use and dries quickly without clumping up. Just paint the areas you wish to block, let dry, and proceed with your painting. When you're done (and after the painting is completely dry) gently remove the masked areas with an eraser. I used a gum and a white eraser to get off the residue. It does dry off white, but don't worry, it won't stain your paper. This is probably the best masking fluid I've used recently. Windsor Newton is one of the best fine art companies so you can't go wrong.

I use both the W & N Masking Fluid Medium (pale yellow) and their Colorless Art Masking Fluid. Both are an easy-to-apply thin consistency, go on smoothly with no clumping, adhere well, rub off easily and cleanly, and are much easier to clean out of brushes than other masking fluids I've tried. I still always soap brushes first. Both are good for small details because the fluid simply doesn't gunk up a tiny brush as fast as some other brands do. The frisket can be removed as long as a week after application with no problems - haven't tried any longer than that. I use the pale yellow masking fluid most of the time, because it is easy to see where I applied it, yet it is not distracting in terms of the appearance of the adjacent paint colors. I use the colorless version when I will not be painting over masked areas and want the pure white paper to show. The yellow version sometimes leaves a very light discoloration. It doesn't interfere when color is applied over it, even very light colors. But, it can take away some of the brilliance of the white paper. The colorless version is nearly identical in color to WC paper, so I find it hard to keep track of what I'm masking, especially small details, so I use it only when bright white is critical. I will keep buying both because they work very well and are reasonably priced.

So...I have never used masking fluid before. I used this twice and the first time it worked great and the second time, as I was removing it, it ripped my paper and ruined my painting. I don't know if it was my fault-maybe I didn't let it dry long enough, maybe I put it on too thick or too thin? So perhaps it was my error. But the first time, when I did dots, it come off great!#sweepstakes

After almost 50 years of watercolour painting as a hobby. I read about the uses of gum arabic. I thought I'd give it a try. I only use Kolinsky sable professional brushes because they are so excellent to use. With the use of gum arabic, Wow!! It was like painting with the finest silk. Large areas of paint just glided onto the paper, leaving no streaks. The paint was brighter on the finished painting. I won't allow myself to run out of my new medium as it's a revalation to me.
I have been a watercolor painter for 35 years. I have tried many different brands of masking fluids. This is my absolute favorite for several reasons. It keeps the areas of paper white that I want to stay white. Some tinted masking fluids say they won't stain the paper, but in my experience that is just not true. Winsor & Newton Colorless Masking fluid is just that...colorless. I don't have a problem with the transparency at all. It leaves a slight sheen even when dry that allows you to see where you have applied the fluid. And, it is easily removable, if you do not leave your painting in the sun, or leave the fluid on the paper for too long. If you do those two things, it can be more difficult to get it off the paper. My only problems with the fluid is that it clumps in the lid and the lid can be difficult to remove. And, as it ages, it sometimes becomes stringy in the jar. A friend told me to keep it upside down out of the light when not in use, and this helps keep it fresh. Now, if someone would just come up with a mechanism that would apply it in a seamlessly thin line, I would be ecstatic. Otherwise, for me, this is the best product in the masking fluid line.
I could come to like this medium. However, the bottle came with hard crusted masking fluid around the rim, and when I popped the cap off after a few dozen tries to get it open the liquid flew everywhere, ruining my shirt and spilling a pool of liquid latex on my tablecloth. For those who don't know, there is literally no way to get masking fluid off clothing once its even a little bit dried, which is a bit upsetting to me because I feel like Winsor and Newton should offer methods for that. I did use a little bit for my painting after cleaning up, but for the amount that was wasted and cloth that was ruined in the process, this masking fluid is definitely something I'll try my best to avoid in the future.
I'd like to try other products to be able to compare because I don't have a lot of experience with masking fluid. But I used it for a project where I was masking the root system of a plant with watercolor paint. I noticed it was a little difficult to get a straighter edge, it seemed to flake, but that may also be due to the quality of the paint I was using. Overall very easy to use, love how quickly it dries and how easy it is to get off. Make sure you apply enough. Sometimes if the layer was too thin it would leave holes that I wasn't aware of until after I peeled and noticed the paint had come through.
I recently got into the habit of turning eyeshadow pallets into watercolour paint. This gum Arabic is the ABSOLUTE perfect one! I’ve used it for three years on three on three pallets. There’s no way I’m gonna be switching to another brand any time soon! My eyeshadow paint turns out PERFECTLY with this!
I did swatches of the solution with combination of two colors and liked the I I I combined granulation of two paints that are covered with granulation solution.I plan to use this in some of my watercolor landscape paintings. Also tried it with combination of traditional paints and brusho- interesting results.Karen Kappell
Used to mask off areas on Arches cold press watercolor paper and it worked great. I applied it with a #4 Princeton Select brush which I washed/cleaned every couple of minutes to prevent it from drying on the brush. Pretty easy to remove (even after leaving it overnight once or twice). It left no discoloration on the paper. #sweepstakes
