Just not my style of game. The tutorial is incredibly long and difficult I’m not even sure I actually got to the real game. The amount of time and buttons in combo were daunting. I pushed through a couple sit downs and hours of play and I just couldn’t see myself remembering all of those and knowing when or where to use them. Graphics are good for the time.

This game is simply amazing. The dynamic is like no other game I have played. It really is about the rush of escapism, the thrill of running and keeping up momentum. Forget shooting and cover (although guns can be snatched off enemies and used), run for your life instead. You feel invincible as you traverse the city, jumping from rooftops to cranes, down storm drains, up levels of offices and scaffholding. The motion of first person is very fluid and the controls are straightfoward enough. You have to time your jumps and roll into landings from greater heights, which you master over time.I have not completed the game yet, but it is quite short according to reviews. But this is all about the immersive, addictive gameplay. Expect shades of Half Life 2 (when being chased, you really feel that the enemies are'nt far behind) and Portal (with various innovative ways to find the way out). Perhaps even some Tomb Raider (swinging on poles and shimmying along ledges). But this game is still original and shines with brilliance. I won't look at First person games the same again. Mirror's Edge is a First Person Game with a twist. It cannot be called a first person shooter because you don't do much shooting. You do have the posibility of gunplay but the main goal is to navigate through a city by running, jumping and hanging off buildings. I personally like the First person point-of-view because it is the most immersive form of game-play. I understand that it has its limitations, but in this game it is pulled off perfectly. You can feel yourself running thorugh the roof tops to the point of getting vertigo and let me tell you, one misstep when you're jumping from one roof to another resultign in a fall can be shocking when you're really into the game (I love the squishing sound at the end). The graphics are great, the gameplay is great. If you find first person awkward, the game does a lot to help. But in a way that feels vey organic. You can press one of the buttons and your character will automatically look the way she has to go. This is a great way to lead you without having to have a big glowing arrow or something. The other thing the game does to help is to "paint" the objects that will help you move along the environment a bright red. This does not mean you don't have to figure out exactly how to get to these objects. But in general it works to make this a fast-paced game were you don't get stuck too often. Although there are frustrating moments where you're not exactly sure how to get to the next step and you're getting shot at. This can result in dying and having to play that little bit over and over again. Although that hasn't lasted too long for me. The Story is interesting and it is told through animated cut scened. Very stylish and simple animation, the kind of thing you could od in Flash. Its good, but I wonder if it couldn't just be done in-game. The animation in the game is so much different (very realistic) that the animation seems an anachronism. All in all this is a great game and I recommned it to anybody.

Remember Assassin's Creed? Remember Prince Of Persia? Remember Battlefield 2? What do all these games have in common? Well, I can tell you it has nothing to do with the Japanese Mafia. They do, however, have something to do with Mirrors Edge. DICE, the makers of the Battlefield games, decided that the concept of parkour used in Prince of Persia and Assassins Creed was an awesome idea, and it would be awesome to make a game that focused on just that. Now if you were to combine parkour with Battlefield, you'd get one amazing piece of game. Of course, all good ideas are always pushed to the side. But on a rare occasion, they are pushed aside and replaced by a just as good an idea. But on a rare occasion, they are pushed aside and replaced by a just as good an idea. Mirrors Edge is a first person runner (PUUUUUUN!) in the future where the Government rules all forms of communication. Oh, and the rest of the large metropolis you play in. You get to play as Faith, a little Asian girl (She's about 21ish) with some awesome moves, as she runs along walls, up walls, around walls and over walls. And barriers. And pipes. And ledges. In fact, if you can see it and in reality you could jump over or onto or through, you can do so in the game.Vaulting over small objects, power sliding under objects almost Jack Black style, run along walls to avoid drops and leap from rooftop to rooftop in single bounds. Faith is a runner, a personal courier who uses the rooftops of buildings to avoid detection of the totalitarian Government who don't want you to deliver what you have. The control this Government has is proven through the colours of the game, where everything is white, green or blue. Even the plants are somehow white. Of course, the one problem with the games universe is the lack of information. The only reason you know the Government is evil is because you are told so. And while the cops will open fire on you makes them feel slightly evil, it could be that you are carrying a bomb to someone that is going to blow up a children's hospital filled with ....children; the kind with cancer. More or less, you are never actually led to believe that the Government is bad, but more expected to believe the words of law-breakers. But while the story does seem to be somewhere in the grey, the voice acting isn't. While there aren't many memorable voice moments, the voice acting is good, and the heavy breathing from the actors is pretty realistic, like they had them running on a treadmill while in front of a microphone. This also helps with the use of the Runner Vision, in which something will turn a bright red, indication that the object can be used in some way, be it a pipe to climb up/down, or a box to leap off from to get to a higher than usual ledge. Mirrors Edge is unique not because of the ability to run over, under and so forth, but because that is its entire focus. There are guns that you can pick up and shoot your way through, but it definitely feels like you are cheating when you take out a room of enemies with a shotgun rather than spend an extra couple of minutes sprinting down corridors dodging bullets and sliding behind cars in a garage. You will spend most of your time picking out routes to get from point A to B, and then trying to exact that route. A large portion of playing will be watching yourself fall to your painful doom, and then hearing your bones explode. While the game does good at making you feel like you yourself are sliding under something, or leaping forward to a building far away and down, making you feel the actual momentum, but the game has a detection problem, and when you would expect to grab onto the edge of a building and hoist yourself up, you will end up saying hello to your good friend GROUND!Graphically, the game is amazing and crisp. When you are climbing a pole, and can't be bothered looking up, you can see everything on the pole, including little cracks, dings and rust spots. The cutscenes are a stylized, animated comic like look, but don't really give much to the story, which feels like the first part of a movie. When running, the camera bobs with the movement of Faiths head, you see her arms and legs, and on the occasion of massive jumps, even her torso, which make you really feel just how much momentum is behind the controller. Now for the falling points of the game. There is no multiplayer. There isn't really much of a way you could do aside from starting different players at different points and a race to somewhere in the middle. There is also no open environment. You can play around in the training level, but after an hour or so, it just doesn't seem big enough. If you had the ability to manage to climb down to the streets, run across the city roads and then get back up to the rooftops a few miles down, then the game would be near on perfect. There is a series of time trials, all of which are sections of levels in the game. Some can be completed in just under a minute, but can take a long time to get a perfect score. While this does seem fun at first, it does get frustrating when you miss the high score by mere milliseconds. But it does feel satisfying when you find the right technique and beat your own personal record four times in a row.Rating: 3/5 Red objects to jump overNothing more I can say about this game. It's an original idea that actually works, and hopefully will be perfected in the near future, if with a slightly better story.(There was one thing I remember. You are never told what are in the packages, or why the Government is really, really bad. So for all you know, you could be playing a terrorist delivering poison gas, another downfall).

The audio is amazing as well; each level has between 3-6 unique music score which fits perfectly with the setting. The sound effects are solid to, from Faith panting, to the sounds of the city, to when you are being chased you can hear foot steps just behind, everything just works and adds to the setting. The game takes place all from a first person view point and you spend most of the time navigating the city by running along, jumping over, sliding under, and swinging to different objects, walls and buildings. Your not always outside either, your often be in indoor environments as well. It's easy to navigate as you have a feature called runners vision which means objects you can grab or jump off turn red when you get close, you can turn this on or off (when playing on Hard it will be turned off), also with a quick press of the O button you can look in the direction of the next objective, and if your still stuck, select brings up a list of objectives, so its hard to get lost or not no whats going on. There are generally several different ways to get around a level; and if you download someone else speed run of a level you will be amazed at some of the routes other players have found! Each level also has 3 hidden bags to collect, while they don't add to the story, finding all of them adds a bit more exploration to the game (and you get a trophy as well) a 'puzzle' area which you must navigate, these are generally tricky but still can provide a challenge, but always feel doable. A push of the square button gives you around 10 seconds of slow motion time which is useful when you have to sting different jumps and wall runs together. The combat is a mixture of hand to hand and gun combat, but at its core hand to hand is the way to go and this is what the game focuses on. You can punch, fly kick, slide kick, wall kick and disarm enemies. Disarming is done by pushing the triangle button at the correct time and is not to hard, slow mo can help with this. Disarming an opponent will not only knock them out but will also give you their gun which range from pistols to shotguns. This game is NOT a shooter, so don't expect to run around shooting everyone. Once your gun is out of ammo you will chuck it away, there is no reloading or carrying extra ammo. That said you can do some cool things with them; nothings cooler than running, sliding along the ground picking up a gun, and while still sliding emptying clip into the next enemy, or doing a slow-mo jump, then mid jump spin around and fire at the enemy's chasing you.It is possible to get thought the whole game which out using a gun.The controls take a bit to get used to but there not to tricky, however the only negative point I have to this game is that some time you don't jump or grab and object when you have pushed the right button, and instead just fall to the ground bellow, or to your death. While it can annoying, especially if your going for a top time, most of the time you will die or fall if you have misjudged a jump, but there will be times when you will be going "why didn't you grab it!". Luckily the checkpoints are generally well placed so you wont need to do much repetition when you do die.Story is decent, its easy enough to follow and while it isn't a Metal Gear Solid type story, it is interesting enough to make you want to know what is happening and see it though. The story is mostly told by animated cut scenes which do the job, but don't seem as flashy as the rest of the game. The voice acting is solid as well. It took me around 7 hours (maybe) to finish the first time round (longer than Modern Warefare 2's 5 hour campaign!), and have played though again on Hard which was a good challenge. There is an online mode where you can compete for a top time with online rankings on a variety of different level. Oh and the DLC for the game (extra levels) is now free :)Ultimately I enjoyed this game because of its excellent art and sound direction, and unique gameplay that didn't focus on shooting everything in site. While it does have its frustrations, they don't happen frequently enough to kill the experience. It is a tough game at times, but never feels unbeatably tough. If you have been sitting on the fence and enjoyed the demo or have just been curious about this game (as I had been) then you should defiantly pick it up, especially now that its cheap (under $50!) as its one of the most enjoyable and unique gaming experiences I have had in a long time :) 4.5 Stars

Mirror's Edge - Awesome game

Mirror's Edge -- a quirky, cool little game that I wish was the model for the next gen of games. A 1st person perspective at all times, but a 'free running' game, not specifically a First Person Shooter (FPS) exactly (although there are some (IMO unnecessary) FPS parts in the game). Why is the game cool? It's extremely realistic looking & you are running at top speeds leaping from skyscraper to skyscraper. AWESOME You play a highly trained runner, doing 'parkour' or 'free running' (the art of urban movement in all directions -- including UPWARDS) and it's incredible. When you get skilled, the ability to go on a 5 minute run (without dying) across the tops of skyscrapers, leaping from building to building, sliding down cables, etc -- it's exhilarating. Dying over and over sucks, but it doesn't really do anything game-wise except you can re-start. And you will die a lot, b/c the game difficulty (I played on medium) is significant. I've been very picky on the PS3 games I purchase. I don't love 'ultraviolence' games generally and I dislike violence as entertainment for it's own sake. A few friends have PS3's and I've played a few violent games (PTA III, head-to-head combat games, various modern military-style games, etc). On the other hand, "Little Big Planet" is not my fav game b/c I'm not in the target age range for that game. (I do love this game's concept, though, and I'm waiting for a similar game for older players.) This game, however, really carries with it the concept of what a game is: something fun, something you can't normally do, something that (for me) is not unnecessarily violent or offensive, something that is creative, something that uses your brain, etc etc.

This game is quite good! The graphics might be a bit dated by today's expectations, but the look still holds well. It does provide a nice 'free-runners' virtual experience. I was surprised to have played it as long as I did - trying to best my time with each run through. Download the DLC if you want new spaces to run through; and they're fun, too! For what it's priced at now, it's even better. Given how fast you could go in a level there are some 'screen tearing,' as the visual try to keep up with you.

Something New

Before I played Mirror's Edge for myself I'd heard a lot about it--good and bad: "It's ruined by the shooting bits" "The feeling you get when you make a big jump is amazing" "The controls are too difficult and glitchy" "It has some great moments" "It's too bright!".Despite the negative comments and reviews, Mirror's Edge was one of the reasons I finally bought an Xbox 360--mostly because it seemed new and different, and despite the alleged flaws I felt it seemed like my kind of game. After playing it for myself I can say that, yes, it is flawed. There are sections where you're essentially trapped with a room full of heavily armed guards between you and where you have to go--you are all but given a gun in these sections but you don't WANT a gun, you want to run and leap and duck and roll and out-maneuver your enemies, not shoot them. Level 7, The Boat, in particular is bad at this, as well as putting you in a very confined space for most of the level which leads to some frustration. Mirror's Edge is at its best when it gives you an open field, a series of rooftops to navigate. And when it IS at its best, when everything is working, it's one of the best games I've ever played.Once you get used to the controls--and it will take some time; they're good, but demand practice and effort from the player--and once you've cleared the story (which is fairly average but does have some great moments; the ending in particular is fantastic) and moved on to the Time Trials, then the game begins to really open up. Even getting one star (out of three) in the trials requires dedication, memorisation, skilled control and creativity. The "Pure" Time Trial courses downloadable from Xbox Live are well worth the purchase price also--set in something like Faith's dreams, they consist of platforms floating in space, making up a more (yes) pure platforming experiences. All in all, Mirror's Edge is something of an experiment; a first-person shooter without the shooting, a first person platformer. The biggest mistake made with it was putting too much gunplay in, but really, those sections make up just a small part of the overall experience. If you can get past the flaws, it's a very rewarding and fun game.If you've seen the videos and read the reviews and thought it seemed like your sort of game, it probably is.
