Beware Lithium battery owners

I have not used the panels to date and the reason is that i have a lithium battery which the product, according to XTM, is not suited to. There is no indication on the packaging or advertising information about this (only in the owners instruction manual inside the box) nor was I advised by BCF before purchase. Given the number of people who now have lithium this information should be clearly marked on the box and BCF staff should be aware of what they are selling. I have been advised by BCF that I now need to purchase and install a separate controller for lithium. Does this void the warranty? That is not clear. This is really not good enough from both XTM and BCF.

I was sceptical about how good the solar systems where compared to a mini generator. How wrong was i. Despite the obvious no noise the 160w kept my battery charged and fridge running in bad weather for 5 days. I was no bother to neighbors at the camp and had a steady supply of cold drinks for the time i was away. I am sceptic no more. Now looking for another permanent solution for the top of the 4x4.

This purchase looks to be a complete disaster. MPPT indication seems to be ambiguous and misleading. Zero information on Internet about this MPPT except default user manual. Anderson plug on MPPT is reversed for unknown reason, so if just plug it into caravan's plug - polarity will be reversed. Supplied 5m lead so 90cm lead doesn't look like something that suits 30Amp MPPT, eventually they just cooked instantly for now reason. So I'm in the field with mysteriously blinking solar with no charge. Thanks.PS Ah yes, reviews here by default sorted in Rating order. Brilliant idea.

Folding Solar Panels 160w
8 August 2022

Works well as a foldout panel and can store easily in its supplied cover. Instructions are good with easy setup an connection to your storage battery. One downside is that there is no angle adjustment to enable setting the panels at right angles to the sun. I fixed this by riveting on an adjustable hinged stay to each leg. But otherwise you need to lean the panels against something for support, or better, prop up the panels with a stick or whatever.

Folding solar panel. You get what you pay for.

I had been lent a similar solar panel so decided to buy my own. This unit was presented well and was a good price. When I got it home to try it, initially I noted the workmanship was pretty average with the bracket holding the digital readout not attached on one side. The maximum output I could get in direct strong sunlight was 13.7 volts while the borrowed one was consistently pushing 14.8volts. I have used it for nearly 3 weeks and it is doing the job intended for it.

Good buy
11 November 2022

After bypassing the builtin reg I plugged it in with MC4 connectors to my existing 10amp dual battery reg and it works great. Having said that I tested it first with its own reg and it was working fine too.A bit heavy and bulky, but the carrying bag helps a lot.According to my battery monitors it is delivering 9+ amps in sunny environment which is more than I need to make sure I can run my fridge and keep my laptop charged without interruption. The price was fantastic too at less than 50% on offer, it is a steal. And a big thank you to the staff in West Gosford store.

Good for the price

I just had this solar panel delivered today. The output of the panel is hard wired into the regulator as opposed to having an Anderson plug prior to the regulator to allow unregulated solar input to a dcdc charger. So knowing that I would void the warranty, I cut the cables to the regulator and terminated an Anderson plug. Once that was done, I connected it to my 12V system in my car and immediately saw it charge at a little over 8amps. I'm happy with the output power of this solar panel but I think for the sake of a few dollars, it could have a connection both before and after the regulator to provide a little more versatility.

Not Suitable
15 October 2022

Purchased this unit in the hope it would do wonders for future caravan trips, giving us much more options to "free camp" for extended periods. Loved the members price deal - that's what tipped the sale. Eagerly unpacked the unit at home and read the instruction book packed inside. Shock horror - "Do not use with Lithium Batteries". No good to me - we have a lithium battery in our van. Called the store - staff were unaware of this limitation.Happy that I was able to return the unit for a full refund. Not sure about recommending this product - never had the chance to use it.

Reasonable Quality for a Reasonable Price
12 January 2023

Unlike many of the eBay panels this seems to be a genuine 280W. I'm running it straight to our caravan regulator so can't comment on the mppt one on the unit. The included cables are good quality and the bag is fine. I have a 140w panel on my caravan and a 'so-called' 200w eBay portable. The XTM unit more than doubles the input of my existing panels! The build quality could be better but for the price I think it will last ok.

Works but not well with charge controller provided
29 December 2022

Charge controller is a piece of rubbish threw that in the bin. Panel is ok has some defects in it. Vinyl backing already perishing and peeling after a few hot weeks. I'm disappointed at the quality compared to one I bought over a year ago from bcf. They put double vinyl on the back of the panels because whatever they use is runnish. Even with an mppt victon I'm lucky to get 120 Watts out of 160.
