Beware of fit due to sunroof and or kayak rack

No negative on the product rather just be aware that it may not fit as advertised. Does not fit 2023 RAV4 as base rests on sunroof (also they want the silicone ovals pressed onto sunroof). If I didn’t have sunroof it still would not attach to factory rails with a kayak rack attached (the 4 piece ones for 2 kayaks that are super common)

Functional BUT...Disappointed

Have an older generation 34" Yakima Windshield with easy to install (for round bar) clips and carriage bolt design. The new generation with ratchet strapping is "just" OK for round bars. Took an extraordinary amount of time to install and not 100% sure if over time will remain stable during use.The flex of the windshield is adequate imo.The Yakima logo is now a softer gray vs the eye catching brilliant white of the past. Finally, 65-70% of windshield is not the nice high gloss finish I am used to seeing from Yakima.Overall, I believe Yakima has cut some corners on this generation of windshield. Conclusion: Functional ...but not what I expected from a great company like Yakima.

Great addition to my roof rack

Works great for reducing wind noise. My only complaint is that the little ratchet straps it attaches with are a bit hard to tighten. Be careful that the tool is fully inserted in the screw part so it does not get stripped out.

It lasted me 3 years…
23 May 2023

It lasted me three years before the front facing starting getting undone. The plastic covering started coming down. I believe it might lasted me longer if I didn’t wash my car every week. Be careful using pressurized anything around it. It is till worth the price of not hearing annoying sounds while driving.

Like the noise reduction, but make sure it works for your vehicle/rail combo
7 May 2016

Bought the 40" Windshield for my 2013 BMW X3 (with factory flush-mount roof rails) and Yakima Ridgeline towers. The width of the Windshield seems right for the car. The reduction in wind noise over the bars is noticeable. However, the Ridgeline towers stand taller on my vehicle than the Railgrabs did on my last X3. And this results in the Windshield rotating under the bar and riding backward, at least once a trip. I think the Windshield needs to be at least 1" wider to help it resist this rotation. Fit guidance from Yakima could also be a little better. Overall, I'm glad I added the fairing for the noise reduction, but it could be better.

Meh.

Extremely disappointed overall. Noise reduction was minimal, and the quality of this product is a joke. The plastic is too thin and is permanently bent after 1 Summer. I feel ripped off.

This size fits my 05 Mini w/round bars perfectly. As noted in the Yakima Fit Guide. It does reduce the noise a bit but not substantially. Cool spot for stickers I guess.Overall though this is just very cheap feeling. The fairing attaches to the clips with plastic expansion bolts that never really tighten down all that well. Just screw them until they are flush or they will keep turning. If they do strip completely it looks like you could substitute a nut and bolt fairly easily. The clip attachment to the bars is similarly all plastic and feels like it will fail. The zip tie tightening mechanism has a plastic socket that surely cannot withstand repeated loosening and tightening. So put this thing on and never take it off! The allen wrench they include actually has a ball end, and if you only insert the ball it will strip out the plastic socket after a few turns. You can push the wrench completely through the socket so it will get more purchase. Still, just snug the straps down. Do not try to crank it or this socket will strip. I think maybe a hose clamp could work there if the mechanism dies.Overall the build quality is junk for the price. But what else is out there? Idk.Note on round bars - the clips are universal and clearly look like they're made to fit more of an "aero" type bar, but they snug up absolutely fine to round bars.

Yakima Windshield - 40 Inch

Using this with my 2019 Mazda CX-5. I have Thule wingbars, podium feet, attached to factory installed flush rails. Originally ordered a longer windscreen but that was a mistake. The 40” is the correct size. Totally eliminated the whistle sound at high speed. No problem attaching the Yakima windscreen to Thule wingbars. Recommended.

mixed performance

I am using this windshield on a Honda CRV. While it does very much cut down on the wind noise its performance was not great with a canoe on the roof. Once we put the canoe on and travel at highway speeds the windscreen gets pushed under the cross bar and rides as shown in the photo. I believe whatever wind action is happening to the wind screen with a canoe on top caused the two front landing pads to loosen. We had to take it apart and tighten mid trip. It was easy enough to install but I am not enamored with the ratcheting tightening on the round bar. Can't seem to quite get it tight enough. Needless to say I won't be using the windscreen when carrying my boat. In general I just take the rack off the car when I'm not using it. This is an REI issue, not Yakima. The windshield showed up in a badly taped and damaged box. It was missing parts and the packaged pieces were opened and even had the original packing slip from the original purchaser.REI is sending a replacement but buyer beware, seems this has happened before.
