Yamaha CG142S Classical Guitar

$379.00

(40 reviews)

This CG142S is an ideal upgrade from a beginner's classical guitar. This has been constructed with a solid Spruce top so that sweet tone with increase, deepen and get better as time goes by. The more this is played, the more the tone opens out. Spruce is a traditional wood used in classical guitar building and has a strong, bright sound. This guitar is similar to the 122 model except it now has a gloss finish. As before, it has a nato neck and rosewood fingerboard, both designed to be easy to play. The quality for price ratio on this guitar is simply excellent.

For the price the product is good and exactly as specified. Action is a little high but the sound is good and still quite playable. Perfect for a beginner guitar for which it was purchased.Great service and response from Mannys.

An excellent beginner's guitar

I am learning to play and this guitar makes it easy. It has beautiful tone, stays in tune, and the nylon strings are easy to manipulate. According to my purchase I was getting a discount because of a blemish, but I cannot find a single thing wrong with it! I feel fortunate to get such a fine instrument for such and incredibly low price.

Disappointing

I bought the guitar because it was a Yamaha and I could do pull-offs easily on E1, and I've kept the guitar for these reasons. However, the neck is horrible. It is stained, not lacquered, and becomes sticky quickly. Your fingers stick to the neck and the strings. I took it back to the shop, and I was told that this was normal for this type of finish, and I was sold a cleaning and polishing solution. The sticky neck makes the guitar hard to play. The neck feels too wide as well, and its edges are sharp and cut into my hand. The sound of the guitar is OK. It has no bass and the G string sounds wrong (I've tried different strings). The guitar doesn't resonate well, and you have to hammer hard to get any nose. My guitar instructor does not like this guitar.

This is my first nylon string guitar and it's a lovely instrument. I bought it to play fingerstyle folk songs. Great sound and easy to play. Love the black too.

Great Beginner to Intermediate Level Guitar
6 October 2023

The CG142SH is a very nice beginner to intermediate level guitar from Yamaha. I consider myself an intermediate level player but I like this guitar because the action is low without any string buzzing and it's loud enough to project very nicely. The fit and finish on this guitar is impressive. I love the solid spruce top which by the way is nicely book matched. I also like the beautiful amber shade of the top. The smooth, even colored dark rosewood fretboard is a pleasant surprise. Good tuners too.

Guitar was damaged inside of packaging
8 August 2014

I know this is going to be a nice instrument but when I received it there were no signs of damage during shipping but the guitar top was busted below the bridge. I did tune it to play it after I spoke with Elliot in customer service. I promptly received my return label and am now waiting for my CG142 Cedar top that is backordered. Props to Elliot who was great to deal with.

Should have gotten one sooner
31 August 2014

This guitar plays and sounds great. This is my first nylon string and after reading all the reviews, this seemed to be the best choice. I'm sure the more expensive models may have more detail and wood selection but this guitar is constructed very well. Musicians Friend has great customer service since my first shipment was damaged but that wasn't there fault. They sent me the return labels pre paid and discounted the price for the hassle. I'm happy with the CG 142C.
