The Montage 7 offers sophisticated dynamic control, massive sound creation and streamlined workflow. Combining its Motion Control Synthesis Engine with AWM2 and FM-X Sound Engines, as well as incredible acoustic samples of Yamaha and Bosendorfer acoustic pianos, allows the player to utilise this as either a solo stage piano, or as a workstation, making it ideal for bands and creative composers. Seamless sound switching (SSS) is perfect for the live performances where you need to end one song and start another without the sound cutting out. Much like the Montage 8, the Montage 7 is a lighter and more compact option with 76 FSX keyboard keys. Ideal for the travelling minstrel.

I bought the Yamaha Montage 7 a few weeks ago and am still blown away by the sound quality and features! The fidelity is amazing! Certainly an big upgrade from the Motif. I also really like the added FM-X sound engine and terrific DX sounds this adds to this instrument. The "Audition" button is a great idea. Now I can hear exactly what the programmers had in mind with each sound! With the Super Knob, the 2 assign buttons, and the expressions wheels and motion control you can, on the fly, add many wonderful elements to your sound and song. Seamless Sound Switching lets each sound sustain your current sound until you touch the keyboard with your next sound. HUGE! Also the Live Set page is perfect for the gigging musician. My rating is really 4.25 if allowed. Sound and expressiveness is king at the end of the day and Montage gets a true solid 5. The sounds and clarity of this instrument is just astounding. I have a pair of Adam A7X monitors that I use for my keyboards and they are enough to really let this board shine (not high end but respectable monitors). But, add this to the dynamics and expressiveness the Montage offers and you really stop feeling like you're playing a keyboard or synthesizer and you're really playing an instrument! Spill over.. Finally!!! the Arp and motion control are very musical and really, really good. My only grips are with the meaning.. its not terrible by any means.. but functions just don't seem to be where I would expect them.. good luck doing your ... MoreMy rating is really 4.25 if allowed. I had to rely on someone asking how to do it on the yamaha forum. Another thing I don't like is that there are no numbers associated with presets. So as you go, good luck remembering or finding what you like... that is very, very frustrating.. I hope the OS improves as the product matures.. Oh, also wanted to mention that the feel of the keys are the best I've ever felt... perfect synth action keybed in my opinion.. just feels great!

The Montage M7 I purchased is the perfect synthesizer for my personal needs. The excellent acoustic & electric piano and organ performance parts, the live-sounding strings, wind instruments, and various synth sounds receive constant positive feedback from fellow musicians, and I work with 11 Bands. It has numerous easy-access editing abilities, allowing me to tweak each part to my preference. I owned the original Montage and had been wondering how they would improve on that for the past few years, and I wasn't disappointed.

This is a synth with a lot of potential. When it comes to in-depth programming there is virtually no documentation whatsoever. There are videos out there showing how to do various things, but there is nothing of any real depth available from anywhere. The default banks are very heavy on dance stuff - content that is immediately dated. While they include acoustic and electric pianos, organs and strings, the banks are not well-rounded. There is no world music content, or traditional anything beyond western stuff (jazz, dance, etc.). No middle eastern, no asian, no african, no progressive rock. It seems like the ideal synth for a guy like Yamaha's Blake Angelos, but not for someone like Wakeman, Emerson, or anyone like them.Much of this goes back to the nature of ... MoreThis is a synth with a lot of potential. No middle eastern, no asian, no african, no progressive rock. It seems like the ideal synth for a guy like Yamaha's Blake Angelos, but not for someone like Wakeman, Emerson, or anyone like them.Much of this goes back to the nature of the documentation. If you are an old-schooler like me and you want to roll up your sleeves and get down to serious programming, a huge amount of things are unexplained. (As in, what a specific parameter is for and how to use it in context of other parameters.) There is a lot of basic and medium-level documentation, but no deep level stuff at all.If this kind of documentation were available, one could break out of the restraints imposed by the AWM2 sampled waveforms and get deeply into FMX programming. (One can only handle so many fizzy string patches before it begins to get a little old.)This all sounds very negative. In fact, the synth sounds great. It has a lot going for it, but if it also had pure synthesis that steps outside the FM box it would be even better. One more thing: This synth is heavy. I strongly recommend a flight case - one that allows you to play with it sitting in the bottom half of the case. Also, as this synth makes excellent use of a pair of foot controllers, a sustain pedal and switch, go with a Z stand rather than an X stand or pedestal stand.
I come from the old, old school, back in the day when ARP ruled and Sequential was about to knock ARP off its perch. This goes quite a bit further. Here are some random points:The sounds are rich and can be extremely lush. It takes a lot of work to custom tailor your own sounds. The FM editing is better than the DX7 (which was basically unprogrammable unless you were into self-torture) but even then one could spend weeks just screwing around with that. For the other engine, things are more manageable but there is still a huge amount of depth for creating the sounds you want. One thing that is a feature to some is the play-along rhythms - a built-in drum machine on mega-steroids. One thing that is a feature to some is the play-along rhythms - a built-in drum machine on mega-steroids. If someone has a piano lounge thing going this is great but to me this is an extremely Japanese approach. It is the 21st century version of one-man organists of the 1970s. (How many bands are willing to allow the keyboard player to play a one-man house music show between other tunes is a question.) As for finding useable patterns, there are thousands, most of which are for whatever the successor to house music is called. If you are looking for something like traditional African (as in real African music, not urban American stuff), look elsewhere. The beats are overwhelmingly faddish. Integration with Cubase and other DAWs is great. There are tons of ins and outs, which is also a big plus. The upgrade to the sequencer capability addressed a huge issue, but it is nowhere as good as the Kronos. Frankly, Yamaha should toned down the one-man-show stuff and made this into a proper workstation. For the price they definitely should have.I don't dislike this synth. Do I have Kronos envy? Perhaps a little. This beast is very heavy. If you have the funds for a MO DX in addition to the Montage, use that as your performance axe. If you get a custom case, put a handle on the back 2/3 of the way up for balance. A handle on the end alone will wreck your arm.
I had a DX7, then upgraded to an SY99, and I've been waiting for the perfect upgrade/companion to that, and here it is. 8-operator FM-X, AWM2 with huge numbers of source samples, and a powerful performance-based architecture that reflects decades of ongoing development by Yamaha. Really, really happy with my Montage.
Built like a tank and sound quality is unmatched by rival brands
After holding off on the initial release of the Montage, due to still being in love with my Motif XF6 (40th Anniversary) model I waited to see what Yamaha was planning to offer as the next big thing to it. Well then they released the new and improved Montage M series and I caught wind of a few demo videos. I became really excited about the new sound engine and what could be done with it. So my curiosity got the best of me and I reluctantly sold my Motif and purchased the new "M" series Montage. I can honestly say this thing blows me away. this board instantly made me forgot about the beating I took selling my Motif. It is a BEAST and worth every dime I spent on it. I know I'm not alone in my opinion of this synth, and I give kudos to Yamaha for working with some of ... MoreAfter holding off on the initial release of the Montage, due to still being in love with my Motif XF6 (40th Anniversary) model I waited to see what Yamaha was planning to offer as the next big thing to it. i have been on the yamaha ride for quite sometime.. from the first motif, to the last motif. the motif, motif es, motif xs, motif xf, and the mox yamaha and the moxf yamaha. you don't shoot out money like that unless your getting the job done.. i'm also a montage user now this, i have the montage m8x. very exciting!! piece of gear .. take the dive.. it's very expensive. however most of us are gear heads.. think about down sizing your gear.and be sure to keep your strength in tack. the m8x has a little bit of a weight curve. you can conquer it though, when you think about the delicious accomplishments you will achieve with this dream machine.
