A genuine pleasure to play!

The samples are also excellent-particularly the CFX with headphones (I actually did a double-take the first time I played that way-the binaural sampling is so realistic). And the Bluetooth connectivity has also been great-I can pull up a tutorial video on my phone, and the sound comes out of the on-board speakers or connected headphones. This thing is heavy-*technically* portable, sure, but not super practical. Which is actually great for my needs, because I wanted something furniture-like, but that would be easy to transport during a move. And from the 'furniture' angle, visually, the P-515 is just stunning, particularly in white. It looks great in our living room. The included single pedal is very robust, as is the add-on three-pedal unit (the latter is probably more than a beginning like me actually needs, but it looks great as a unit). Much better than those little plastic rectangles you get with some keyboards. The stand and bench were very easy to put together. My only 'complaint,' if you could even call it that, is that it would be nice if the bench were fully height adjustable (it's a bit short for me), and it it had storage within. But this is a really minor thing, and certainly something I could upgrade in the future.TL;DR: The P-515 is a dream, and the kit add-ons really bring it up to a new level. Now, to get back to playing!

Best Alternative to an Acoustic Piano :)

I had low expectations, but this piano emulates the sound and feel of an acoustic very accurately. Of course, it's not exactly the same- but it is pretty damn good. Definitely worth the money. There are many options and settings to experiment with. The keys are fully weighted (a little heavier than an acousitc). You can also use headphones (1/4" jack) as not to disturb the neighbours. The piano also comes with a pedal. Overall, you get what you paid for, maybe a little more. It's a great alternative to an acoustic piano. I'm quite happy with my purchase. :]

I had just ordered and received a P-255, but when I called Yamaha to ask them what they thought about the differences between the two, the rep started to sort of chuckle to himself and then said that the two Pianos could not really be compared. I knew I'd be sending the P-255 back and so I recorded with it and gigged with it. I think that the P-255 might be a better stage Piano than the P-515, but that the P-515 is a better all round Piano. My only complaint is that the P-515 does not remember your settings and so every single time it is powered down, it needs to be completely set up again. With my 2 P-120s, the P-155 that I had briefly and the P-255, this was not the case. All of those other "P Models" do ... MoreI bought a white P-515 from MF back in September 2018. Also, it seems as if there's more plastic on the P-515 than on those other Yamaha P models, but that is to be expected if you want real wood keys a real escapement movement and these incredible Acoustic Grand Piano sounds at this price. Yamaha manufactures 1 out of every 4 instruments on the planet. They have been making Acoustic Pianos for many decades and they now own Bosendorfer. There are real reasons that Roland just can't compete with Yamaha when it comes to the real feel and real sound of an Acoustic Piano. First of all, Roland does not make Acoustic Pianos and their Keybeds are heavy and slow to respond, in my opinion. Their Piano sounds, are very "Synth Sounding" They make great products, just not great Digital Pianos. You will not regret purchasing a Yamaha P-515 Digital Piano. The Bosendorfer patch alone and the real wooden keys are worth the price of admission. It also makes a great weighted key midi controller.

No other slab style digital piano can compare with this instrument at any price. Yamaha makes 1 out of every 4 instruments on the planet. They sample their own acoustic grand pianos, including the Bosendoerfer Imperial. No other manufacturer offers solid wood keys, synthetic ivory, synthetic ebony, an escapement movement and these world class grand piano sounds at this price. This is also a great midi controller for Virtual Piano plug ins and for those wanting the real of a piano for all situations where weighted keys are essential. Other brands sound "Synthy" and feel slow and unresponsive. I still have 2 P-120 model pianos for gigging. But for the home and studio, look no farther than the Yamaha P-515 digital piano. Only a higher model Yamaha can compete with this world class instrument.

I bought this digital piano here at MF back in 2018. Originally, I bought a white P-255 and then I saw that these would be available in just a few short months. I loved the P-255, yet when I called Yamaha, and the rep told me that you can not even compare the two pianos and that for the extra $$$, the P-515 was leagues better. A couple of years earlier, I was trying to upgrade from my old P-120 and at that time, (2014-2015), the P-155 was supposedly the upgrade for the P-120. The P-155 was so horrible that I opted to have my P-120 repaired 6 times rather than keep that very inferior instrument. Then I saw the ads for the P-255 and really wanted one. The P-155 was so horrible that I opted to have my P-120 repaired 6 times rather than keep that very inferior instrument. Then I saw the ads for the P-255 and really wanted one. A couple of years passed and I could not take the sticking keys of the P-120 any longer and decided to order the P-255. After it was shipped, I saw the advertising for the new P-515 and knew that I had to have it. In the 30 days that I kept the P-255, I grew to really love it. It sounded better than the P-120 and had the EQ faders right there on the top panel as well as a slider volume adjuster. The P-255 is a great gigging piano. I played a music festival in Bend, Oregon and made several videos of those shows with that Piano, all the while knowing that I was returning it in favor of the newly announced P-515. This is the finest slab style digital piano at this or any other price. Allow me to explain. 1 out of every 4 instruments in the world today is made by Yamaha. Roland is a terrible choice for a digital piano because they are not manufacturers of acoustic pianos of any kind and their sounds and actions are just awful for recreating piano music. Also, Yamaha bought out Bosendorfer and so all of the sounds inside of the P-515 are sampled from instruments that Yamaha actually makes. This is also the least expensive digital piano made with real wooden keys, synthetic ivory, synthetic textured ebony and an escapement movement for playing soft passages with more speed and accuracy. Kawaii also make some world class acoustic grand pianos and they also make some really fine digital pianos, but Yamaha makes the very best digital pianos. I used to own a 9 foot Steinway concert grand piano. The Yamaha CFX Grand sounds a great deal like my 1929 Steinway. However, I have never in my life heard a piano sound like the Bosendorfer Imperial inside of the P-515. This is why I can definitively say that the P-515 has no rival, except a real acoustic Bosendorfer. This piano sample growls and breathes fire when one leans into these keys. It is an animal that lives inside of the patch, and this animal has unlimited dynamic range. I have read reviews that say the keys on the P-515 are exceptionally heavy. All I can say about that is I have played some of the most blisteringly fast music on the P-515 that I have ever played in my life. Remember that this is primarily a digital piano, not a midi controller or a keyboard designed to play synthesizer music. That being said, I have used this keyboard for other uses besides that of its world class sounding pianos and it always performs flawlessly. My only gripe about this digital piano is that it does not save your settings. (unless you happen to own an Ipad) This means that you need to "set up" this instrument every single time you power it off and back on. There are some 9 steps that you need to scroll through to fully "set up" the pianos inside of the "piano room" feature. So all in all this is truly an incredible home studio or home/living room digital piano. I would not want to gig with it though for a variety of reasons. However, this piano can not be beaten by any other manufacturer of digital pianos for the various reasons I have already pointed out. Recap: Real wood keys, All piano samples created using their own manufactured acoustic pianos, a real escapement movement, a great new built in stereo sound system. This is the most realistic piano experience one can get from a digital piano at this price, period! I have been composing for 50 years and know what I am writing about. You will never regret purchasing a Yamaha P-515 Digital Piano and it is only going to get more expensive as time passes.

Best digital piano I have owned. Perfect for home and stage
8 July 2020

I have owned a multitude of digital keyboards, but when it comes to replicating the sound and feel of a genuine acoustic piano for under $2000.00 the Yamaha P-515 is the best. There are brands that come close, such as Kawai, and there is some subjectivity involved, but for me this unit is hard to beat, especially at a $1500.00 price point.I began playing professionally at the age of 14 and I am now 69. While this piano serves both home and stage use I bought it to use primarily at home. It is sold as portable, but be prepared that it is still rather heavy. Like so many digital pianos, it has digitized versions of multiple instruments and sounds but where it stands out is its ability to replicate both the sound and feel of an acoustic piano. I enjoy the built in digitized instruments but mostly just use it for its piano sounds. It puts out sufficient power with it excellent speakers that the use of external speakers in the home really is just not necessary. On the various digital keyboards I own, their greatest drawback has been the learning curve to use them to their full potential. This is absolutely not an issue with the Yamaha P-515. You can begin using it right out of the box though some of the capabilities are still best attained by reviewing the included instruction book. The various buttons are incredibly easy to figure out and the addition of an LCD screen further maximizes the ease of use.You don't need to purchase the optional 3 pedal attachment if you primarily rely on the sustain pedal when. The included sustain pedal is really good. It is heavy, will not slide on the floor and is easily attached. I decided, though, to get the 3 pedal attachment and I do have to add that attaching it proved to be a bit of a pain. Once attached, though, it has been flawless. The pedals and wooden keys can't be beat. There are 2 headphone jacks so if you are learning you can do so without bothering the household. You and the instructor simply use the headphones. Hooking up to an external amplifier/speakers is easy as is connecting to a computer. Of course, there is the wide range of additional things such as built-in metronome, accompaniment, etc. but I will not go into all the included sounds, etc. since these can be readily found in listings of the keyboard. I do suggest, however, that if you are going to use this at home do purchase the wood stand. I think the keyboard is too heavy for a typical folding metal stand. You will have to assemble the wood stand but it is pretty easy.Yamaha remains my favorite keyboards. They really do make a superior product to my ears. Back in 2013 I gave my Yamaha Clavinova to my grand kids and replaced it with a Casio, something I have regretted ever since. With the Yamaha P-515 I finally enjoy going into the other room to play my piano. There are many reasons why this particular keyboard has become so popular. When I ordered mine it was back ordered. I honestly have not one regret. I absolutely love the sound, multiple inputs, ease of use and the genuine feel of an acoustic piano. I saw one reviewer imply that the touch is a bit too hard but I did not find that to be the case at all. I am more of an organist than pianist and I have zero difficulty with the play of the keys. The only keyboard I have owned that I like as much is my Hammond A100 (a B3 with speakers) and that is saying a lot.

14 October 2022

The Yamaha P515 is a high end instrument at a very fair price. I was looking for an upgrade from a Roland FP 30 and the Yamaha was a better choice for me compared to the Roland and Kawaii models in the store. If your not looking for furniture, this key board is the closet I've found to a real piano. The staff provided no service in the store, but they were quite helpful once I had chosen my instrument. Sam Ash store had much inventory to choose from which made comparing each instrument valuable.

Great keyboard, iffy accessories

I purchased the "bundle" instead of just the keyboard because I knew I would need a keyboard stand and a new bench. I wish I had done my homework on the accessories before buying. First of all, these are Musicians Friend stock items (not Yamaha brand) that, purchased separately, would have cost less than the amount they added to the keyboard price. So don't expect that the "bundle" pricing is saving you any money. Second -- looking at reviews of the bench showed that many people were unhappy with its height and adjustability. I concur with those reviews that the lowest setting of the bench makes it too tall for shorter adults and children. Third -- the X stand also places the keyboard height either above or below the height of a standard upright piano's keyboard. ... MoreI purchased the "bundle" instead of just the keyboard because I knew I would need a keyboard stand and a new bench. Third -- the X stand also places the keyboard height either above or below the height of a standard upright piano's keyboard. The horizontal support arms are 6" longer than what is needed for this keyboard, so they either push the keyboard away from the wall or they stick out where you will bang your thighs into them when approaching the keyboard to sit down at it. And I cannot adjust both the stand and the bench to put me at the correct height both for my legs to the floor and my arms to the keyboard. Purchase the keyboard only, then get a stand designed just for it, and find a better-rated bench.

What took me so long?

Im not an accomplished musician by any stretch of the imagination and I finally decided to seriously start learning the piano after about 50+ years of just messing around on the instrument (yeah, Im an old guy). Having spent all that time playing on an old Wurlitzer baby grand with a poor, reconditioned keyboard(uggh), my main concern was finding an affordable instrument with an expressive touch. I read every review of the keyboards under $2,000 that I could get my hands on and decided on the Yamaha NWX action as something that would do the job.Well, the P-515 has far exceeded my expectations in every possible way. Now mind you, Ive never played on a $250,000 concert grand so Im not going to compare it to that. However, both the mechanical and expressive responsiveness of the keys is way beyond anything I have experienced at this price point or in that of instruments costing thousands more. Yamaha has a true winner in this product. I hope it maintains its feel and quality for many years. Only time will tell but I have my suspicions that they havent become a major player in many areas of the music world by not satisfying their customers in the long term.As for the features of the keyboard itself, I cant do them justice here; watch the multitude of online video reviews. But I must say, as a student, the ability to connect to a tablet or computer via bluetooth and mix the sound of my online lessons with the P-515 through my headphones is a great feature that Im sure my neighbors appreciate. As for the rest of the bundle, the normal cost of the stand and pedals added in is more than the bundle price, so the seat (not so bad) and the dust cover are effectively there at no extra cost. This is a definite dont hesitate to buy item. Im glad I waited for Yamaha to bring such a great product to market. Just my humble opinion.
