I use this for computer speakers. I kept buying more expensive computer speakers and it never did sound good, so I bought a cheap reciever (Sherwood rx-4103) and hooked it up to some infinity bookshelfs I had. It always sounded better than computer speakers. But when the Sherwood died, I decided to go with a 5.1 reciever with digital inputs. I've got my computers digital coax out runing into a vcr cord that I spliced into 15 feet of cat5 over to this Yamaha. So, It's straght digital to the yamaha and it's a much cleaner amp anyway, so.... It sounds GREAT! This receiver is exactly what I needed. Great sound but nothing too complicated. The optical audio input was the reason I bought this. If fixed the sound delay I was having between my new LED TV and my old receiver. Also, I never have to change to input selection because everything runs through my TV (yes, I am aware I could run all my HDMI cables through the receiver, but I prefer it this way). Another nice feature is that the receiver was easily paired to the universal remote that came with my digital cable box. I like the fact that this receiver will work great for a long time, even when I decide to update to better speakers and perhaps a 3D TV.

As others have mentioned, the instructions are vague at best - but if you're able to navigate through the on screen menu's via the remote - you can quickly solve this issue. Yamaha is know for high quality recievers. I was very disapoointed with this one. A cool feature having 4 HDMI in and 1 out. But if you try to use it on a Plasma TV with DVI-D using a HDMI to DVI-D cable the audio WILL NOT play on the reciever reguardless if you connect the HDMI only from Blueray player or Cable Box, or Component video and either of the 3 audio types ( optical audio, digital coaxial audio, or RCS audio). The only source I could get to work was the Tunner. Of course the manual tells you part of this and of course the maunal is on a CD and the information was in the trouble shooting area. Assigning an audio source to the video source was also a mightmare for me.
The sound is good, especially for this price range - I run it with Polk Audio's PSW10 woofer, CS10 center, Monitor 50 fronts, and monitor 30 rear surrounds. I bought it to replace a Pioneer VSX-519v which decided it was too "ecologically responsible" to permit any electricity to get used at the amplifier stage after 18 months of continuous duty as the center of home entertainment, and there is no discernible difference in crispness or range.The number of HDMI inputs alone is a good reason to buy this Yamaha...four of 'em; my previous receiver only had two. That means that even with a Blueray and a PVR plugged in, I've got HDMI inputs left over...So - if I can find a gadget to convert a Sony Wii's output to HDMI - I may possibly finally escape the "Helllllp!!! I bought this Yamaha following a friends advice. I was surprised with the easy setup, excellent quality of sound and the product itself.Lots of channels of various types.It's a really great entrance product for those who want to achieve a quality sound.The only thing it's missing is upscaling analogic input to hdmi (digital). But it's really great and now i want to go higher in Yamaha !
I RMA'd the first one I received thinking it was a bum unit because I wasn't getting audio over HDMI. The 2nd one came in and I had the same issue. By chance, I unplugged the HDMI out cable from the back of the receiver and I go sound. I tried a different cable and got the same result. Long story short, I'm having to buy 2 new digital audio cables to get the sound I should be getting through my HDMI cables. I'm not happy with this device, and when I spoke with customer support, they told me it was an issue with my projector not being able to handle the bit rate of the HDMI… which I think is complete bunk. Regardless, I'm not going through the rigamarole of sending the device back a second time only to have to pay a restocking fee because I'm fed up. Bought this receiver as a gift. Not quite the "gift" I had hoped for. I was told that installation and the instruction manual were difficult and of poor quality. The subwoofer does not fit into the slot on the back of the receiver. The receiver and Samsung Smart TV do not communicate well. The back speakers of the surround sound system do not produce sound when in television mode. However, the back speakers do work when playing cd's. More trouble than it's worth.
I bought this Yamaha to replace a Sony that failed for the second time. Found this unit on sale at [@] and am thrilled with it. The sound from this unit on Sony speakers is awesome. It was pretty easy to set up but IMO the remote is confusing with too many buttons, however the buttons are easy to read because Yamaha had the good sense to print the letters in White instead of Grey as some other manufactures do. I am well pleased with this receiver and for the money I found nothing that came close to the quality and performance of this unit.
Great product at a great price.I am mid-50's and audio technology has passed me by. I have to say this product works well, and does what I bought it for. It is very complex with many settings. It took me 4 weeks to get it to work as I intended. To me it is not a simple plug and play. The manual is not much help and there is no support for questions. The remote has so many buttons it will take years to figure out what they do.I wanted 5.1 sound from my TV and/or DVD. I wanted simple plug and play. This is complex. I even tried Best Buy with questions. They really don't know what most features are.It was a great deal, but way over my head.
