Amazing Drums at ANY Price Point!

These drums are anything but entry level drums. Please, Don't let the price point discourage you! The shells are Beautiful. The lacquer finish is flawless. The inside of the shells are untreated/raw, which I have found to NOT be a problem, when it comes to sound. The Birch is cutting, as you may expect, but, it can also be quite warm. The tone from these YAMAHA shells is amazing. You can honestly get any kind of tone out of them. I would suggest a change of heads, for a broader range of tone and tuning...But the stock heads are good for breaking in the kit, and getting comfy on it. I would also take the time to add some lubricant to the rods/lugs. The lugs and rods came as is, dry. Doing this will also help to open up the tuning range.Add these shells with the Best ... MoreThese drums are anything but entry level drums. Please, Don't let the price point discourage you! They answered my questions without hesitation and always helped me accomplish the short term goals to get this kit where it is today. A few items were done online via GC while the remaining 5% came from other retailers (solely based on product availability). It is important to note that until recently I had not touched a set of drums since the mid '80s! I wanted to go "middle of the road" to ensure what I was doing as a kid returned relatively easy - it did and I was hooked from that point forward which meant additional equipment and better cymbals. All of this took research (mainly videos from Google and reading product reviews). There is always trial and error pulling up the rear. 😊 Basically when all is said and done, the only extra stuff I will have are the original drum heads, the wing nuts off the cymbal stands and a Gibraltar accessory / tom mount. 😊 Pretty cool all in itself when you look at the evolution of this build. Remember this all started with a 5pc shell pack, the Yamaha 680W hardware kit and a Zildjian ZBT cymbal kit.

I bought the Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 5 piece drum set for my son as he has been going to lessons for 3 years already. Our choice of brand was based on already very good reviews and we are familiar with the high quality of the Yamaha instruments. The set came nicely packed and was easy to assemble. The sound really stands out, The Honey Amber color stands out as well and you can notice different color tones depending on the angle of the light. Both Taylor Foott and Daniel Cooke from the Orlando Lee Road store were very helpful, patient and gave us good advise for this purchase.

Inexpensive substitute for Recording Customs
30 March 2016

The first day the Stages Customs sounded okay. I thought things would get better but 24-hours later I couldn't get them sounding like Vinnie's on Zildjian Day in 1984 and was ready to ship them back. The third day I was in agony, full of buyer's remorse. I've owned new Ludwig, Gretsch, Mapex and DW drums before and know new kits need to be 'played in' before reaching their full sound potential. For almost three more weeks I beat the tar out of them, putting gel clings on the Pinstripes to reduce overtones, re-tuning them several times a day. Yesterday I tweaked the tuning once again, threw away the gel, and played a set full of toms singing so sweetly I thought I'd sat down at Steve Gadd's Recording Customs by mistake! Yesterday I tweaked the tuning once again, threw away the gel, and played a set full of toms singing so sweetly I thought I'd sat down at Steve Gadd's Recording Customs by mistake! My pier & beam practice space has a hardwood floor, 11-foot ceiling and could function as a 'live' studio room. The bass drum sounds like a rumble of thunder in there, the snare a pistol crack. Big airy Ringo-type tom fills resonate with an exhilarating clarity, like Bonzo smashing out of a demolished building. The latest Yamaha Stage Custom drums are Recording Customs in everything but name only. They have a tight studio sound, birch shells with Yamaha hardware, craftsmanship and quality. The differences are minimal: Stage Custom shells are a single ply thicker, have low mass lugs, different badges and colorful finishes not available in the newly relaunched Recording Custom line. 1.6 mm triple flange hoops come on the new RCs too. Stage Customs are made in China instead of Japan but I have no quality gripes; if the Stage Customs I got are second rate I'm more than happy to be stuck with them.Buying an additional 8 inch rack tom and a 14 inch floor tom turned a 5-piece shell pack into a dream kit. I'm happy---my neighbors might be another story. Oh well, that's the way the bass drum beater bounces!

I have been playing drums for over 40 years in many types of venues from Concert (symphonic) to live performance (Jazz, Country, Rock, Blues, Big Band)I have owned many types of drums over the years (Ludwig, Mapex, Pearl , Newport, Sonor, Yamaha), these were not the low end kits mind you but the better end of the manufacturers kits. I find my current Yamaha stage custom birch to be far superior to my old Ludwig Pro Beats of the 1970s. I like my Sonor Force 2007, however the Yamaha Stage Custom Birch have a more tone independent sound, drum to drum.I have owned two sets of Yamaha stage custom drums, the initial 96 version and my current 2016 Birch version. I found both of them to be very durable drums when properly cared for. My first set was in great shape after 10-12 years of use, and is sill making music with its current owner. The hardware Yamaha uses is excellent and never chipped, faded, rusted or pitted over time. The finish of my older stage customs never faded and looked as good the day I sold them as it did he day I purchased them, even with continual gigging about town. The Bass drum hoops never cracked or showed signs of color fade. After 12 years of gigging about town they were still in great shape. My stage customs always held their tune even though In carted them about from gig to gig and to the studio. I'm no snowflake, when I mean these drums held up I mean they were in their cases in the back of the truck with the rest of the band gear. Loaded and unloaded and assembled and taken down with the rest of the bands gear (Of course I was my own roadie)The hardware (tom holders and the like) never failed or broke or rusted etc. They always worked and looked great, even though they experienced moving about during gigging. I have heard complaints of the tom balls failing but I never experienced this issue with my tom mounts. they worked as well 12 years later as they did on day one.My history with stage custom speaks for itself

The box contains the entire kit including easy to read instructions and a drum key.The Raven Black is a beautiful color, no plastic wraps around the drum these are expertly finished. Assembly Tima isApprox. 1 hour if you inspect each peice and assemble. Tuning was a breeze, because of the Yamaha manufacturing they are perfectly round and have excellent bearing edges. The BEST investment: YAMAHA
10 February 2022

When you sit down and play this kit, you’ll have drummers asking themselves why they spent more than a grand for a drum set. I’ve been around and played Yamaha drums growing up in the church and in high school and have fell in love with the sound. When it was time for me to purchase a drum kit of my own, the stage custom birch was the ultimate choice for my sound. DO NOT LET THE PRICE FOOL YOU! YOU'LL BE AMAZED on what this set sounds like with different heads and nice tuning! The Cranberry Red shells are just as beautiful as ever and since red is my favourite colour, she not only LOOKS GOOD, she SOUNDS good too! I love a lot I can just look at and say, YUP! That’s mine, makes you a proud owner.Definitely worth the buy!

Where to begin haha? There's so many great things about this kit that blew me away when I unboxed it. I'll start off with the quaility of the finish and the shells, I had a hard time deciding between Raven Black and Natural Wood. After thinking about it for almost a week straight I chose Raven Black because I love the classic look of black and it always looks great on stage. The finish is spectacular, you can actually see a little bit of the wood grain through the black which gives it a nice look. The shells are flawless, the bearing edges are super smooth and the heads sit perfectly flat with no issues at all. The shells are a bit thicker than the previous generation of Stage Customs which adds more projection and warmth giving the drums a nice overall mid to high range with lots of attack, warmth, and projection which makes the overall tone of the drums very pleasing to the ears. I play 80's Heavy Metal and Rock and these drums sound fantastic in that type of setting but to be truly honest, they would sound amazing no matter what style of music you play. The hardware that comes on these drums is flawless and very sleek looking, the absolute lugs look killer and they don't over power the finish which balances the finish to chrome ratio nicely. Moving along to the sizes of the kit, I ended up going with the standard shell pack which includes an 22x17" bass, 16x15" Floor Tom, 12x8" and 10x7" Rack Toms with a matching 5.5x14" Snare. I then added two more component drums which are an 18x16" Floor Tom and 13x9" Rack Tom. I paired this kit up with the classic medium weight Yamaha 700 Series Hardware and some Sabian AA Cymbals. I couldn't be any happier with this kit, these Stage Customs are some of the best drums I've ever played in this price range. Overall I'm super happy with the Stage Customs and I'll have them in my collection till the end of my career. If you need a set of drums to take to a gig or to take into the studio and you don't have a huge budget, these are the drums for you. Best decision I've made in a long time.
