Yamaha THR5 Electric Guitar Amp

A great mini amp suited to acoustic guitars for private use applications in living rooms or bedrooms. The sound quality is very crisp and clear. There is a choice of microphone emulation to simulate mic-ing up your acoustic guitar. The signal from this mini amp can be fed into a PA or a mixing desk using the Phones output socket. This amp is not really suitable for rock electric guitar sounds like crunch and distortion. The Yamaha THR5 is more suitable for this purpose.

A Keeper For Sure

I have looked at the Yamaha THR line of amps many times in various retail shops. Finally saw one on MF in open box condition. Thought, "What the heck." Looks and functions as new. I bought the THR5A to use with my acoustic-electrics. I wanted a small portable amp with good effects for small venues and home practice. For me, a solo singer song writer playing originals, this little amp is a true gem. I use it for effects support in stereo, the other line run through my 40 watt Fender Acoustasonic. For years I have used the durable Acoustasonic as my PA, monitor, and for my vocals, and my Boss RC3 Looper. (Carvin AC175, Carvin AE185, Huss and Dalton CM). I can even use my OCD pedal through the THR5A for playing blues leads over the Loops.I would recommend this amp to any player of AE guitars because the sound quality out of this small inexpensive amp is truly amazing. But remember young squires, the THR5A is a very low watt amp with tiny speakers, so do not expect it to support you in a setting of more than 15-20 attentive listeners!

Great sounding, very portable and rather cool looking modelling amp.

I have a large Marshall amp already but needed something more portable, ideally with effects built in, that I can take with me when I'm away or move around the house with easily. I'd had this little baby recommended to me as a great acoustic guitar amp by a friend and what an excellent recommendation it was.Firstly let's talk size. It's the size of radio and weighs just 2kg. It's mains or battery powered so truly portable and useable outside. You can take it on holiday with you it's so small! It has quite a nice retro look as well with a nice orange glow coming out of the front grille when you switch it on.Enough of all that. Let's move on to what really matters in an amp. The sounds you get from this little baby are simply amazing with 4 different microphone emulations along with a combo amp setting (for a more electric sound) to choose from. Most of these can then be altered with the Blend/Gain, Master and Tone dials. That's quite a range of sound. On top of that though you then have a range of effects you can apply including compressor and chorus, which can also be combined, as well as delay and several reverb settings. There is also a tuner cleverly built in.In terms of other inputs and outputs besides your trusty guitar there is a headphone socket (which my partner rather likes!) and an Aux socket for plugging in an external sound source. A lead is supplied for that. So, want to play along to some tunes from your phone. plug it in and away you go. On top of all that there is a USB socket (lead, again, supplied) so you can plug into your PC and make use of the CuBase AI software that is also provided. I've not used the software yet but from what I can see it's home studio software so you can record your guitar playing and mix your own music. Quite a few people who have used it think it's amazing.So in short, do I recommend this. Absolutely. Very portable, great looks, and most important great sounds. At a very good price too in my view. Yamaha have done a great job! I'm so blown away by it I may get it's brother the THR5 so I have something equally portable for my electric guitars.

I wanted a compact electro-acoustic amp and found one!

I recently purchased a PRS SE Hollowbody SE and wanted an acoustic amp to take advantage of the piezo pickups. I wanted a compact acoustic amp (since I already have a big electric amp and the THR5A appeared to fit the bill. I'm very impressed with the amp, it is certainly compact (fits on my desk) and has the added advantage of Hi Fi sound for phone/CD inputs. The amp sounds great with the electro-acoustic and has some really impressive effects too some "standard" and some downloadable.

Bought this yesterday (15/3/21) and it arrived today. It has absolutely exceeded my expectations so far. Nicely packaged, decent instructions and free Cubase together with a well made, solid amp with a quality feel all for less than £200. What's not to like for that price. I have been playing my PRS electro acoustic through it for most of the day and I just can't put it down but I have as my finger pads are a bit sore so I thought I'd write this quick review. It's dead easy to use, simply plug and play. The various mike selections all sound awesome considering what it is. There seems to be an endless amount of possibilities with the few built in effects. Tomorrow I'm going to rig it up to my Yamaha MSP 5 monitors and I reckon it will sound epic. So, yeah for the price it certainly exceeds expectations. It's always a good feeling when you have made the right purchase.

Pretty good

I just use the amp to practice my song repertoire to keep myself motivated. It has enough amp models but I only use two of them Clean EQ sounds the best to me.The portability and size were the key reasons I bought this. I do wish that you could separate the effects individually instead of the way they are set up--compression mixes with delay. Delay mixes into chorus, chorus into reverb.At low volume, you can get some real nice tone from this amp, but after around 60% volume, you really lose bass and it distorts pretty bad. I mean, what can you expect from the speakers in this thing, right? At this size, something's got to give.Anyway, like the way it's built. The orange LEDs (to make it glow like a tube amp) are cool as are the built in tuner and love the bag.

Solid Unit

I have owned over a dozen different acoustic guitar amps over the years including several that cost over 1k. This amp sounds as good as any with a caveat. The amp is VERY small and only sounds great at very low volumes. The amp is not really a performance amp and low notes sound terrible at beyond 12 o clock gain levels. The unit may work for very small and quiet performances but not at typical small performances where people are actually talking with each other. I tried using the 1/4" output to drive a powered speaker for additional volume however the great sound of this amp was then lost in translation. You may be able to stereo mike the amp and then run through PA but a dedicated XLR out that sounds good would give this unit a perfect score in my opinion. The Perfect Home Practise Amp for Electro Acoustic Guitar

A fantastic little portable electro acoustic guitar amp. A great full stereo sound with a clear and warm tone, no hiss or noise. The built in mic simulations and effects are top notch. Plenty loud enough as a home practise amp. I doubt it would be loud enough for gigs, but it isn’t designed for that purpose. It gives your electro acoustic a lovely warm ambient tone and is just great fun.Solidly built, looks high quality and very retro and vintage. Yamaha THR5A Acoustic Modeling Amp

I was looking for a high quality amplifier for my electric cello that sounded as natural as possible, was lightweight, and had little or no tonal coloring. My Fishman loudbox 100 (similar to the loudbox artist) sounded really good, but was becoming a chore to cart back and forth to practices, and its power wasn't needed in a medium sized room. This THR5A only weighs 4.4 lbs! After experimenting with the settings (microphone type, effects, reverb), I found a setting that produced a very pleasing sound. While the 3.3" speakers are tiny, and don't move a lot of air for a cello, the volume and quality and tonal transparency were surprisingly effective in a medium sized room. After listening to some other amps, such as Roland and Peavey, the tonal quality of this amp stands out as much cleaner. This is a 4.4lb wonder, isn't terribly expensive (used), and it works well with an electric cello - a very tall order!

excellent amplifier for recording

I use an old akg 3000 microphone with a rolls minimix II preamp to feed a 1/4 " output to the THR5A, then connect the amp usb feed into audacity for recording. The built in tuner registers with both flute and guitar allowing accurate tuning of both instruments - use F or G. Almost non existent noise level when used with a humbucker. Great effects in real time. Realistic recordings on the cheap. Highly recommended.
