I bought a D500 several years ago to replace my D300 which finally refused to work. It was clear that it was a huge improvement which many of us who like the features of 1.5 crop waited a long time for. The D500 was everything the D300 was but had features like 10 frames per second and 20+ megapixels. Recently I dropped the D500 and the fall caused impact to one of the buttons on the back. At that point, the camera stopped working but I was able to unjam the stuck button and restore the function. That experience drew my attention to the fact that I may not ever be able to replace the D500 since it is no longer manufactured. The D500 is a great APSC camera, arguably the best of its type on the market. Why, it's fast writing to card and deep buffer, its ability to shoot at 10 frames per second. You can shoot 200 raw files in a single burst and on releasing the shutter button and refocusing it's ready to go again. Not that you will want to burst 200 frames in one go, but its more than capable.I primarily use mine as a backup body to my D5. The D500 shares much with the D5 namely the auto focus system and expeed 5 processer. As the D500 is a 1.5 crop censored camera you get greater reach. So a massive advantage is that smaller primes can be used for example the Nikon 200mm to 400mm f4 prime zoom becomes a 300mm to 600mm lens that you can hand hold or the 300mm 2.8 Nikon prime becomes a ... So a massive advantage is that smaller primes can be used for example the Nikon 200mm to 400mm f4 prime zoom becomes a 300mm to 600mm lens that you can hand hold or the 300mm 2.8 Nikon prime becomes a 400mm. These lenses are not only more affordable to buy but are easier to use in the field. The full frame or FX Nikon camera bodies don't give you the same level of crop as the DX even the D850 crop isn't as good as the D500.So more reach and smaller prime lenses make for quite a impressive package, if you're having to walk miles to image your subject and you don't want to be stuck on a tripod or mono pod if your shooting birds or erratic subjects. That brings me onto the auto focus and tracking. The 153-point tracking is sublime, tracking is effortless when its set up right and with a little practice. I've obtained better results in the field here than with the D5 where the same auto focus system doesn't cover the entire view finder like it does with the D500.The D500 has decent dynamic range and like most Nikons is great in low light. I would say too, buy the best quality glass you can. Sigma global visons lenses are ok but only if you program them with the dock first, most folk don't and then slate the lens. This is a decent budget lens to get you started with zooms. The 150mm to 600mm is a great starting point, plus the contemporary variant of that lens is quite light. Ideally you'd want a prime f4 or 2.8 to get the most out of this camera.Battery life is ok, but buy a spare. A hard day's shooting will see off a fully charge battery. A spare battery is around the £50.00 mark and cheaper than a battery grip which is several hundred pounds. The touch screen is good too nice and sharp plus its quite flexible to use if shooting above over head or down on the floor say for macro. Snap bridge and connectivity is great, plus you can hook the D500 up to studio lighting and use external shutter release. There's not much to gripe about with this camera, only that the video is poor, yes it shoots 4k video, but if you shoot a lot of video this isn't for you. Nor if you primarily shoot landscape. I would recommend FX for landscape and the Nikon D850. However, get prime lenses for that, as you will pay the price in technique and inferior glass given its 45-pixel sensor.Other than the video there's nothing to not like. Ergonomically it's great, with great weather sealing and reliability. My D500 hasn't missed a beat since I bought it in 2016.I should say this camera doesn't come with a built in flash nor does it come with any gimmicks like creative modes, fully auto modes or lazy function. So not for the novice user, I'd buy the lower to midrange bodies and progress up to this one personally to get the best out of it.In summery then, if your subject is wild life primarily, this is the camera for you. You have the shutter speeds and auto focus system and frames per second. Get the best glass you can afford and with practice you can get amazing results. No it's not a D5 in miniature but it packs one hell of a punch for its price. It's outperformed the D5 in the field in certain situations and it's the go to camera for me if I'm hiking to get the shot I need.I hope you've found this review informative. If this camera fits your requirements, then you will not be disappointed.

I'm liking the camera. Only problems after I got it, Nikon put out news product was discontinued, parts support would not be available in 6 years...Also, software has changed how & CFexpress memory card can be used Vs. old XQD. But most information focused on the XQD card so shopping for a CFexpress card is hard, you don't know how much to spend as the min speed needed is hard to pin down. I just went with the SanDisk CFe along with the Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-II cards and so far I can shoot 200 shots without filling buffer in RAW; set to one card at a time. I picked camera due to my having lens and I don't like non-DSLR viewfinder.but took me long time to go digital. The pre-order process was the only way. The box was shipped ok. I ordered from them per the suggestion of Ken Rockwell's website.
I just upgraded from my one-year old Nikon D5600 to this D500, and what a difference it has made to my bird photography! With the 10 frames per second (fps) versus the 5 fps of the D5600, I have a lot more keeper shots, especially when photographing birds in flight (BIF). I can even get 10 fps using a 250 MB/s SD cards that I already had for my D5600, which has saved me money instead of buying an XQD card, and an XQD card reader, to get my photos from the camera into my Mac. If you're a professional, or scared about losing your photos because a card has gone bad, having the option to have an XQD card, AND an SD card in the camera, and setting it to have the XQD card use the SD card as a backup is great, but I don't think it's a necessity for most amateurs like ... I might be shooting near sunset when I'm losing the light, but when I take a picture and review it in the LCD screen, it often looks brighter and better exposed than I thought it would! Again, helping me have more keeper shots. The programmability of some of the buttons is a nice feature, too. For example, I normally have the camera set in AF-C mode, and Group autofocus, but I have been able to program the Pv button to go into single-point-focus mode when I have one of those bird shots where there's a branch in the way of the bird, and I need the camera to focus on the bird and not the branch. This, although a little awkward with finger position, I think will be a very useful option over time.I have also noticed that the autofocus with my 200-500mm f/5.6 Nikkor lens seems to be somewhat faster with the D500 than it was with the D5600. With BIF, this has been VERY helpful!I had been concerned originally with the reduction from 24MP in the D5600, to 21MP in the D500, but honestly, I can't tell the difference.I also like having an LCD display on the top of the camera with much of the info button's information there, rather than having to call up that information on the big LCD screen on back.I also like the fact that if I'm working in dim light, I can just rotate the power switch and it lights up all of the buttons and the top LCD screen briefly. This camera IS one pound heavier, and bigger, than the D5600, but for a man's hand, the grip feels more secure in my hand. Also, there's no pop-up flash. But without the flash, the body is better weather-sealed, and with bird photography, I'm not going to be using a flash, anyway.Overall, I would highly recommend this camera body to anyone who wants to step up their game to more serious photography with a crop sensor body, where you may have to deal with fast-moving subjects (e.g., birds, nature or sports).
I currently own a Nikon D5000 since 2009 and have been considering upgrading to the D500 as I had read about the great autofocus system. This seemed to be the best upgrade since I enjoy taking pictures at IMSA auto races and considered the speedy and sharp focusing to be a definite plus. I also thought the 16-80 lens would be a great walk-around lens due to the focal lengths (my current kit lens is only an 18-55) and the 2.8-4 aperture is also an improvement over my current lens. I have been considering this purchase for about a year so I have read all of the reviews and felt like I knew everything about it before the purchase. A few initial comments: the view through the viewfinder is so much brighter and wider than my current camera. The feel of the unit itself is perfect--it just fits my hands. I love the lighted button display on the back as I take some astrophotography shots and it's really inconvenient to have to carry a flashlight to find your buttons after dark. This camera is loaded with so many features that I also purchased the Darrell Young book (630 pages) on Mastering the Nikon D500 so that I can fully understand all of the features and settings. I'm still learning to use this camera and I haven't yet been to any car races due to the covid-19 virus, so I'm anxious to see how this thing performs. I know I won't be disappointed. This will probably be the last camera purchase for me for a long time. Also a great shout out to B&H. Great service and price. Product was delivered in about three days. Couldn't be happier about the whole purchasing experience. I didn't like the fact that it doesn't have an on-board flash as I occasionally use or need one, but that wasn't a deal breaker. I have an older Metz 44 flash that seems to work well with it. I had read that using some very old flashes won't work as the electronics are different and could fry the internals of newer digital cameras. I called my local camera shop and they verified that the Metz unit would work with this camera. Good news for me.
I hope someone gets back to me on this. Upon arrival I noticed the box was open. It was a camera/lens kit looks like, but the lens, manuals and some other small parts like cables are missing. The camera itself was just loose banging around in the box. I bought separately 2 new SanDisk SD cards. One 64G standard high speed card and one XQD card as required by the camera. After installing the cards I turned it on and got an Err message. I wasnt to happy by this time. I removed the XQD card and was able to format and use the standard SD card. I tried another XQD card and still just get the Err message. So..,Ive just been using the standard SD card for photos and videos but with restricted speed. My fear is that this camera was used or a demo or something and it was just thrown together to ship it too me at the last minute. Not being able to use the XQD slot is very disappointing. I thought I purchased a brand new functional camera with all of its kit intact. Not the case so if someone from Wal-Mart reads this please email so we can get it resolved. Thank you.
I'll keep it simple. I'm a hack photographer, and I won't even begin to pretend. My strategy is to marry a solid body with good lenses, read a couple of books, tweak the settings, and hope for the best. Decided on this upgrade to improve my pic's of the kids playing sports...lacrosse and soccer primarily. Compared with the D90, this body helps me get at least one good shot for every sequence I try to capture. Prior it was maybe 1 in 3. Part of it is using the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 lens (also a highly recommended upgrade). But mostly this body offers double the fps, so I miss far fewer shots due to simple timing. And the additional pixels allow me enough space to tweak composition if necessary, without ending up with too much granularity. It's taken me some hunting ... MoreI'll keep it simple. Not quite second nature yet, but it'll come in time. It's not bad...just different. All in all, I'm quite happy with my choice. Great balance of performance and cost, while allowing me to use the glass I already had.
This camera has not disappointed me once. I made the move from a D5300 to the D500. The camera is hefty without being too heavy. Having all the buttons and wheels easily accessible (not having to dive into the menu) is wonderful and the SPEED! The 10fps without buffering....I have multiple shots from which to choose. The continuous autofocus is impressive, especially when shooting action. I'm sad to see Nikon has discontinued this beauty, because it's a beast in a small package. The only drawback for me is the 20.1 megapixels, however, if they had to take away 3 megapixels to achieve the rest of the camera, it's ok with me.
I got tired of waiting so I bought this imported version. I would have rather had the USA version but, so far so good. As in every other review I also can state it is a tank! It's solid and robust in construction and with the battery grip it's a great fit in my hands. Since receiving it my Canon 7D is now a back-up on birding trips and my D750 and Canon 6D are relegated to landscapes and portraiture. This camera is noticeably better at action photography. The 7D is just as fast but doesn't focus like this camera does. I can hardly wait for better weather to work this thing harder, but it has impressed me a great deal. Only my Canon R5 focuses as well as this, but it's also double the cost and when tracking a bird the R5 will hunt, but the D500 stays locked. I'll ... I'll leave others to to fill in the blanks about dynamic range and ISO's but I will say, low light isn't its' forte. The D750 outperforms it in that area. If you want to shoot action sports or moving wildlife this guy will do the job and the price makes it an even better buy.
