Decent Bulbs, but Beware Vendor Lock

It convinces me that they're more interested in locking consumers into their line of products than offering a flexible solution that plays nice with the rest of the market. Nobody wants to learn three different apps to control their lights. The incompatibility with the popular open protocol control software isn't a problem if you're willing to accept the vendor lock. The app isn't bad; it can do just about everything the large open protocol apps can. Just be prepared to exclusively purchase TP-Link IoT products unless you want to jump through a handful of apps to control everything.Home assistants like Google Home or Amazon Alexa provide a layer of abstraction that can give you a single interface to control bulbs from multiple brands, but you shouldn't be forced into using it. Moreover you have to seek out IoT devices that support those home assistants. At the time of writing this review the price for four bulbs was $39.99. This price is okay if not a tad high. I think in part you're paying for the TP-Link brand name. In a way this is reasonable considering the increase in compromised IoT devices; the TP-Link name comes with some assurances of security. Ultimately, though, the vendor lock with these bulbs is a dealbreaker for me.

So, if you have 3 bulbs in a room, and 1 bulb in another room, you can assign them to different rooms and commands to activate them. The ability to control with voice is nice, but our experience using Alexa has been hit and miss. It works seamlessly about 80% of the time, but for the other 20%, the lights either don't respond or have a long delay with turning on/off. I don't know if this is an issue with Alexa or the bulbs. It's faster and much more responsive when controlling directly through the app, but sometimes it's more convenient to use voice controls if you have the option to do so.All of the different color options are pretty neat. It took us a bit to figure out how to get to the larger color spectrum within the app, but once we did, we had a lot of fun checking out the different options. I find that I enjoy the different shades of blue and green the best, but you can also make some cool-looking combinations if you have multiple bulbs connected to one fixture as we do. For example, we watched one of the Captain America movies and set up the lights to be red, white, and blue. We're nerds... I know, but it was fun.You can adjust the brightness from 1% - 100%, which allows for a wide range, and if you want 1 color to stand out more than the others, you can set that one higher. This is all really easy to do in the app (or with voice controls, though I prefer the app for this). I do wish the max brightness level was a little higher. I don't think they get as bright as a typical lightbulb, but they definitely still deliver enough brightness to light up a small room without issue.Overall, I recommend trying these out. I think they're a good entry point for those new to smart lighting, and they're less expensive than some other options I've seen. The setup might be a bit tedious, but the app is easy to use (mostly), which makes the process feel smoother. Make sure to play with the automation and shortcuts 'cause that really opens up more possibilities.

Nice Bulbs, but Pairing can be a Pain
12 August 2022

I ordered these bulbs to use in my media room for mood lighting, and once they were finally set up, they work great so far. Setting them up can be a chore, though. The pairing process seems pretty straightforward, just by following the steps in the Tapo app, but two of the four bulbs seemed to have a lot more trouble to get working than the other two. The two that worked well paired right away, upgraded their firmware, and functioned properly. The other two probably took me an hour to get working, and I almost gave up on them. I was using the same location, WiFi signal, and phone to set them up, but the app would just get stuck and give me an error, Perseverance paid off, and after many attempts, they finally paired up properly. I was using the same location, WiFi signal, and phone to set them up, but the app would just get stuck and give me an error, Perseverance paid off, and after many attempts, they finally paired up properly. It might have taken 5 minutes each to pair two bulbs, and 30 minutes and many attempts each to pair the other two. I’m not sure what was going on.Also, when I finally got the two slow ones to connect, I found that the original two were somehow removed and wouldn’t connect. I had to delete them in the app and repair them, but luckily the app detected that these had already been paired before and prompted me to see if I wanted to use the same settings. That was nice, at least.Once all of the bulbs were paired and working in the app, they are very nice to use. I’ve configured them in the app to all be part of one group, so they are all synchronized with each other. Now I can use one control to adjust all four simultaneously. The color palette is extensive, and you can find just the right color that you want. One of the things that I really like is the automatic compensation setting, which automatically sets the brightness and temperature based on the time of day and ambient light conditions. The light is always nice and comfortable. So far they’ve worked perfectly, after struggling with the pairing. If you’ve got the patience to get through that, unless you’re lucky and they all just pair up, you should be pretty pleased with them. These automatically added themselves to my Google Home system, and all I needed to do was assign a room to them. After that, they work well with my Google Nesr.

I can adjust the brightness and color or even set it to auto white for either indoors or outdoors. The colors can be chosen off a color wheel so it seems like all possible colors are selectable, and they work well. All the lights can be placed in a group in the app so they can all be changed at the same time or changed individually. You can also set different groups for the light bulbs like living room & bedroom, etc. There are also some fun modes like party (changes colors at a fast pace) or relax (changes brightness and colors gradually). I can also set a schedule for the lights, a timer, or even an away mode (lights will randomly turn on and off so it seems like someone is home). These lights are compatible with my google home, which has worked flawlessly for me to turn on/off, change to simple colors, and set brightness. Although it is a function of my google home rather than these lights directly, I am able to set a routine like a sleep routine, where my google home sets the lights to 50% for 20 minutes then 5% for 10 minutes before turning it off, etc.The phone application works well and supports other Tapo devices you may have. I also have a Tapo camera and its great to be able to have one application where I can control several types of devices. I can also set iPhone widgets so I can quickly control power and one of my custom settings with one button.Cons: I haven't seen an easy way to trigger the Theme, Schedule, Away, Timer, Party, or Relax modes when viewing my bulbs as a group, they seem to only appear when looking at each bulb individually in the application. I also own some KASA smart bulbs and although TP-Link made KASA and Tapo bulbs, they can't really connect to this application and seem to only run off the KASA app. It would be nice if I can pair them all together or at least use one less app.Value: Great value! No hub needed like some other bulbs, just run straight off wifi. You get four smart bulbs for a really affordable price. Unlike bulbs where you can only control brightness or daylight to night colors... you can choose any color you want on these. I primarily use these bulbs to control brightness and daylight/night colors but these are such a good price that the additional colors are super fun. I love being able to set away modes when I am away from the house, dim and yellow the lights near bedtime so I can get ready for sleep, and voice control my lights using google home. My favorite which always surprises people is that I set routines using other applications like IFTTT that check my google calendar and turn my lights on 20 minutes after I get off of work.

I have over 200 smart bulbs in my home, and they are divided about half and half between TP Link and Hue bulbs. Normally things go smashingly, but every once in a while when something goes crazy with the wireless and everything resets…. Well, at that point I doubt my sanity in thinking that smart bulbs would “simplify” my life, as I wander around resetting bulbs and routers.Enter Tapo. I am not thrilled that I need to load a new app and that at this point my Kasa products from TP-link are not in the same app as the Tapo, but evidence seems to point towards Kasa integrating these two in the next year. I am going to put up with it for now b/c I am intrigued at the idea of Tapo devices that don’t have to run on my wireless network/can operate on a separate frequency ... MoreI have over 200 smart bulbs in my home, and they are divided about half and half between TP Link and Hue bulbs. I am going to put up with it for now b/c I am intrigued at the idea of Tapo devices that don’t have to run on my wireless network/can operate on a separate frequency and thus uncluttered my VERY cluttered wireless. I am hopeful this will help simplify upkeep and resets. So at this point these bulbs operate as standard smart bulbs/no issues. Although no hub is required to get the full benefit of the different frequency/get these off your wireless you will need to invest in a TAPO hub type device. I am going to wait until they integrate the main Kasa line into the app before delving more into the TAPO world, but at this point pleased with the bulbs. My one gripe with Kasa products, for years, has been that if a kid flips the light on and off too quick at the switch (because it doesn’t turn on quick enough!) it will reset the entire bulb. So I am delighted to report this is no longer an issue with Tapo bulbs - yay! Priceless! That right there inspires a two thumbs up from me. :)In all seriousness, though, I love the TP link brand. They make pairing simple and their products just plain work. I look forward to seeing this new line develop further and can happily recommend it based on my experience with the company over the years.

Seems like a decent light bulb.

Bottom line: These work great, provide ample light and display any color you could reasonably want. App is easy to use and fairly intuitive. Wife had an issue getting Siri voice commands to work (Google assistant worked without issue), but otherwise they function exactly as you'd want. Haven't fully tested the automated, time based-features (sunset, sunrise, etc.) but will probably never use them, so they weren't a priority. We've got a handful of other smart lights in our house (Hue, specifically, in the living room and son's room) that were gifts over the years, and we ultimately wanted to expand the set up into our bedroom, but hadn't really felt the need to spend the money on two more bulbs for our bridge. These offer a better price point with basically equal ... MoreBottom line: These work great, provide ample light and display any color you could reasonably want. All we really lose out on by mixing systems is the ability to control (and automate) the whole system from one app. Controlling the bulbs individually is easy (it'll be the only way to control them after you first get them set up), but joining them into a "group" so they could be turned on/off and color-changed together was super simple.App and bulb setup were both very straightforward. Open the bulbs, screw them in, download the app, and follow the onscreen instructions. The app will find the bulbs (you have to do one at a time) and then the bulbs will need to find your home wifi (have your password handy!) and then you're ready to roll. For our needs, the only major advantage I can see for the pricier Hue system is the ability to set and save room themes. Maybe I haven't found it yet, but with the Hue system, I have multiple saved "themes" for each room. I can tap (or tell google) to set the lights to my saved color pattern for my favorite hockey team, for instance, plus a variety of other custom or preset themes built into the app (I've added a christmas theme and a halloween theme, for instance, and the app comes preloaded with things like a sunset). The hue app can also create themes based on items you tell it to try to color match...Tapo has nothing that advanced, but it's also a rarely useful gimmick. The Tapo app has themes associated with each individual bulb, but they are limited to preset Party and Relax modes (the former flashes quickly through the primary colors--slower than a strobe, but fun--while the latter pulses through shades of white). Both can be adjusted for colors used, brightness, pulse frequency (1, 2 or 3 seconds) and brightness (0-100%). But as of yet I can't find a way to use themes with a group of bulbs at all, and can't see a way to save non-primary colors on individual bulbs. If I find just the right shade of blue by adjusting the color wheel, I can replace one of the 8 preset buttons, but I don't see a way to add more than that. So I can replace "standard" blue with my new shade, but now the default, primary blue is gone. I don't think you can add saved colors, only replace. It does remember what color it was on when you turn it off and will be that color next time you turn it on.Bottom line, these bulbs make for easy use as room lights, reading lights, or for bringing wild colors into the bedroom when the mood strikes.Having more theme options and customizability would be nice, but these are at least 90% as useful as the Hue bulbs at a significantly lower price point and with no "bridge" hardware or other expenses required. Just buy the bulbs, get the free app, and you're in colorful business.

This manufacturer also makes the Kasa brand, however I chose the manufacturer labeled product because it was a better fit & appeared to be easier to use. Am using these as outdoor lights at my home's entry ways. I have set them up for Sunrise/Sunset and they have been working fantastically. I previously had light sensing bulbs but they never quite worked the way I wanted, i.e., came on too early or stayed on too long. These bulbs are perfect & during the Summer I will change the colors to Bug Lights. Set-up & programming is a breeze. App is user friendly & had no issues with set-up. Highly recommended! Of note, my wireless router is in my basement and these lights are in receptacles that are outside my Front & Back Doors. They still get great WiFi reception. Highly recommend!

Wow these are nice light bulbs and they work flawlessly. The setup is easy and takes no time at all even if you want to control multiples in one group. The Tapo app is pleasant to use, connects to the lights every time, and isn't glitchy like some apps. Linking the devices with Alexa is seamless and you do so right from the Tapo app. You can setup different groups, timing, and sequences of action. Its pretty cool. These are 60-watt equivalent bulbs. The actual wattage on them is 8.8. So these aren't going to be lighting your living room with these. They are sufficient for a small to mid-sized room, or an area light for something like a reading chair. They are sufficient for a small to mid-sized room, or an area light for something like a reading chair. These bring an end to going to the big box store and choosing light bulbs that have the right temperature (kelvin) for the setting in which you will be installing them. Since you have a full spectrum of colors to select from you don't need to worry about the temperature of the bulbs you are choosing. Another simple feature that I thought was pretty cool in the app is when you edit the white light in the preset colors it tells you exactly what temperature (Kelvin) the spectrum of light is.I have to say TP-Link could have sent these over the top if you were able to use the same app to control their different smart home products across the board. Like I use some of their Kasa plugs in my home, but the Tapo smart home products require the installation of the Tapo app. Though the Tapo app is quite a bit nicer than the Kasa app, I think its a little ridiculous that you need to have different apps. Another aspect of these bulbs that isn't a deal breaker, but I don't care for it is the way they change from one color to the next. When you select a different color for the lights its like a hard blink from one color to the next, rather than a gradual seamless transition like a curtain closing and another opening. Its kind of hard on the eyes, especially for those with light sensitivities. You can select in the app for the lights to gradually brighten when turned on or gradually dim when turned off. Something of a similar affect would have been nice to use with switching from one color to another. Maybe TP-Link can add that in a firmware update if they are monitoring these reviews.I think they are more than worth it and quite pleasant to use. If you are a person that likes mood lighting, and you want to be able to control your lights wirelessly with one of the smart home apps. Then go for it. You get four of these lights for what I think is a very economical price for what you are getting. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is because like I said. I think its a bit ridiculous that you cant use one app to control the Kasa products and Tapo products.

bright and stable smart bulbs

I got this set of smart light bulbs for my living and bed rooms. Setup is pretty straightforward. After I downloaded the included TAPO app, I was able to pair the bulbs one by one with ease. You can easily customize the color from a preset color from the app or from the color customizer option to your heart's desire. You can also adjust the brightness of each of the bulb.I was also able to connect the system to Alexa app for automation. So now I can just ask Alexa to turn it on or off, change the brightness etc..I'm observing this set for more than a week now and so far the setup is stable. All bulbs are responsive and work as designed. I've had smart bulbs before that became unresponsive after awhile for some reason.
