This is a great value-- 5TB will give me the room I need to back up files and archive. This is not the fastest drive but I wasn't looking for speed-- just cheap storage. Make sure you use a dedicated cable-- USB C to USB C or USB C to USB A-- no adapters. I tried a USB A adapter on a USB C cable and my IMAC did not see the drive-- not even in disk utility. A regular USB C to USB A cable did the trick. It did not mount directly-- I still had to go in to disk utility but there it was. It comes formatted in EX-FAT but I reformatted easily in to MAC Journal Extended. I was up and running in minutes. I also plugged it in to a Windows 10 laptop ... I have at least 20 different Lacie Drives, but the ones with the USB-C port are the ones I have the most problems with staying connected to my M1 Pro Max Macbook Pro. The drives constantly disconnect no matter what cord I use or what port I use. I once walked away from my computer for 10 minutes, and came back to like 57 disconnected drive notifications. It's horrible. The only fix I have found is to buy the LaCie rugged drives that are MICRO B to USB-C. Have had no issues with those ones and really hope they keep making them, because I don't trust these one at all. Such a waste.

I really wanted to love this external hard drive. I've seen so many photographers using it so I figured it must be good, and it's made tough to survive bumps and bruises. However, I have had issues with it constantly on my MacBook. It will constantly disconnect and I will get the notification to Eject disk before disconnecting. I have changed my Mac settings to not put hard drives to sleep and the issue still persists. It happened enough to the drive I bought from B&H that the drive wound up failing, so I sent it to Seagate for a replacement and now the problem is even worse with the replacement. So much for putting my Lightroom library on it.Experience: 1 star. When the drive works, it works great and fast, so 2 stars.

I've owned this model drive for years and just bought three in 5TB sizes for my photography work. I've found them reliable and certainly durable. However, they are a bit slow so I would not recommend them for video. However, for photos these drives are just fine and I've never had one break on me before.The read/write speeds on these drives is roughly 120/110MB/s. For comparison's sake, the read/write speed for my MacBook's internal drive is 6,000+/4,000+, a huge difference.FWIW, I'm running a 2023 MacBook Pro with the M3Pro chip, 18GB of ram and Thunderbolt 4 ports.Finally, I had a world of trouble with the MacOS randomly disconnecting the drives until I reformatted them as MacOS Journaled. Since then, I've had no issues at all.

LaCie lists the max read/write speed as 130mbps, which is about as fast as you're going to get with an external HDD. Disk drives are for backing up and archiving. If/when the drive fails it's reasonably easy to recover data from a mechanical drive. SSD's are fast but when they fail they tend do do so without warning and recovering data can be impossible.Bottom line, if you want to edit directly off the drive, get an NVMe ... I was told by the Geek Squad that something went wrong on the inside of the product and there was nothing they could do to fix it. I then tried reaching LaCie's customer service, and they were really hard to get a hold of. The phone number on their website was busy, their website said we can reach them via live chat ... Here’s a breakdown of my personal experience:First off, the durability of this drive is outstanding. I work in various environments, including outdoors and in busy areas, so I need something that can handle bumps and drops. The bright orange rubber casing not only looks rugged but does the job of protecting the hard drive well. I’ve accidentally dropped it a couple of times, and it hasn’t skipped a beat — the shock resistance gives me peace of mind. Additionally, the IP54 water and dust resistance is a bonus for when I’m on the go.

I recently started editing long videos and the raw footage was taking up too much space on my desktop. This product has been helpful for storing footage and backing up completed projects.It has a USBC to USBC cable. Compatible with my MacBook Pro. It would have been amazing if I could connect the LaCie to my iPhone as well, but my iPhone has a lightning port, and the converter I bought does not work for transferring information.All-in-all, great product! I would recommend for anyone, with a compatible device, in need of storage.I purchased the product a month ago.
