When you massage the focus to the exact point you will be astounded with the results. I have also bought the 90mm 1.25 Artisan and that is great too. Again no comparison to Nikon but with some sharpening and contrast you acquire fantastic images with out of the park bokeh!

I have the classic 1989 Canon f/1.0, and this lens is every bit as good except that it's manual focus. With the R's built in focus peaking, I much prefer manual focus anyway, since you can get that razor thin DOF exactly where you want. With this kind of portrait lens, you don't need or even want autofocus.It's a fantastic lens and does exactly what you want. Took a minute to get used to the de-clicked aperture but now I prefer it.

As of July 2021, the only options of an ultrafast 50mm prime lens for Canon RF are: 1. Canon RF 50mm f1.2 - $2400 or Canon EF 50mm f1.2 - $1200 2. Sigma 50mm f1.4 art via adaptor -$900 3. This 7artisan 50mm f1.05 - $500I would say this lens can achieve the same dreamy effect of 1 and 2 without double or quadruple the price. As a amateur photographer, I think this is the most sensible choice given the canon native lens' high cost and Sigma lens's weight. It's ok to manual focus with the help of focus peaking and magnifying function on my Canon RP, especially for static portrait shots. The 57cm close focus distance is not good fit for macro though.Bottom line: a great affordable bokeh lens for portrait!

It's beautifully flawed vs. being sterile and precise. It's the anti-L. If I lost a different lens I'd likely try something different. This one I'd replace in a heartbeat.The lens is heavy and solid. The aperture is de-clicked, which I don't like, however I imagine the video types complain louder when they aren't. Focus is smooth with just a tiny amount of backlash. The front threads are machined well, and affixed a B+W that felt perfect going on and off.The pictures of the Bostons were the first taken using the lens out of the box with no planning or forethought, they were merely handy. Through the EVF they looked ok, but once I put the card in the PC I was hooked.
Nifty little lens. Nice leather case. The lens cap give the term janky a bad name. This is an aluminium cap held on by a bit of felt. It will definitely fall off if you point the lens down, or... well do anything that can't be counteracted by gravity. Have you ever set a plate on top of a soup bowl to keep it warm? Same level of security there.For the price, it's okay.
I've always been skeptical about reasonably priced lenses but went on a whim buying this one. It's pretty outstanding. Lots of character, and actually really intuitive when focusing, even wide open. In LOVE with the separation, and seemingly effortless focus. I am a hybrid shooter and it fits both needs, especially the de-clicked aperture. If 7artisans came out with a similar 35mm, I would buy in an instant.

For the Canon RF mount (I purchased this lens for the Canon R7), the base of the lens is nicely flared to match the gunmetal gray of mounting plate on the camera.As a fully manual lens on the Canon it worked well in M and A (aperture priority) mode. The lens appears multi-coated. Focus throw is about 180 degrees and very smooth. There are no detents in aperture ring, no clicks, and it feels very smooth, like the focus ring.Unfortunately, the same degree of craftsmanship was not used in determining the quality of glass elements inside the lens. There is considerable longitudinal chromatic aberration, where high contrast edges closer to the camera have red fringing, and high contrast edges further from the camera focus point have green fringing. It is impossible to correct for both in post processing. The CA is embarrassingly very noticeable at f/1.05, noticeable at f/2.8, and nearly gone by f/4. And this lens is amazingly sharp at f/4. But why buy a f/1.05 lens when the best results are obtainable at f/4?? My expectation was that even if there was minor CA it would be manageable by f/2. It is not. Ghosting and haze are not necessarily bad things in a lens, but not when they are bright green edges and impossible to ignore.It is truly a shame that the care devoted to the exterior of the 7Artisans lens was not devoted to the glass elements inside. This could have been an outstanding lens. But then it would probably be twice the price. I returned it.

This lens is far from perfect. The technical reviews chronicling the problems with sharpness in the corners and chromatic aberration are accurate, but therein lies this lens's charm. This lens is an absolute light vacuum and flares like no other lens I've shot with, making capturing artistic portraits a blast. Wide-open, nailing critical focus (or as close to it as this lens can come) is a challenge but rewards you with really breathtaking images when you do. Honestly, it's even a better video lens as its incredible shallow DOF and its unusual flaring really lend itself to rendering a very pleasant cinematic look.
