Received faster than expected. Cast smooth and love the low profile. Good reel for any use. I've used mine for jigging and skipping. This is my first of many to come AbuGarcia reels.

Let me start with my first abu ever. I purchased a 5500c3 over 10 years ago while I was in the navy, that reel is still in use to this day. I have pulled many salmon and steelhead out of the river over the years. My second abu I purchased 3 years ago and fell in love with the low profile design of the black max, and again I have caught many steelhead with this reel and is still in use today. I bought a new revo3 sx the other day and this reel is the best one yet. I tagged out on steelhead the day I used it and it performed beautifully. I will always buy abu garcia for my fishing poles they are a great reel for a decent price. I have a Daiwa 100TSH reel that I am sending back to the company cause it broke down on me while fishing the river, I would not recommend any ... MoreLet me start with my first abu ever. I bought this reel a few months ago, but really only just today got to stretch it's legs. Great looking reel, looks fantastic with a Veritas 2.0 rod. Very smooth and quiet. Why only 4 stars you ask? Because the handle and knobs are too small. I caught 2 18", and 3 other bass that were in the 14" to 16" range, and I just didn't feel like I had a whole lot of leverage to get them to the boat. This was one thing I noticed when I first bought this reel, is that the handle just didn't seem to be as beefy as on the Revo SX or winch I own, and today confirmed it. I was debating on whether or not I should buy the larger carbon handle and large EVA knobs, but my mind was made for me today, and I will be buying them. Not saying this isn't a good reel, but with the Revo name ... MoreI bought this reel a few months ago, but really only just today got to stretch it's legs. I received my Abu Garcia Revo SX HS, and immediately attached it to the rod I bought just for it. It hugged the rod like a dream. It is small and light weight, but still has a nice spool capacity. It is a beauty to look at, and my brother named it, “the Nightmare” because of the colors on the reel, and the fear it brings to the fish.Smooth as cream right out of the box, with nice level of lube (sometimes you need to add after you unbox). The tune up was easily taken care of, and the brakes setting was simple. For those of you who have read reviews about the difficulty of adjusting this reel, have no worries. Simply set the brake at zero, adjust the tension knob to proper setting, then re set the brakes to where you like them starting a max working way to proper ... Simply set the brake at zero, adjust the tension knob to proper setting, then re set the brakes to where you like them starting a max working way to proper brake level( often people do not do tune in this fashion, and wonder why they have a problem). The spool capacity is nice for a reel of this size, and spins perfect on its bearings. What I did not like about this reel(and other Abu reels), was the plastic tension knobs. After using these reels over time, they wear out and need to be replaced. They are cheap though, and replacing them is a breeze. Another thing was the clutch bar. It is a little stiff, and makes it harder to engage with the pad of your thumb. With getting used to I found it not to be that much of an issue. The last thing I didn’t like, and which gave it 4 instead of 5 stars, was the little play between the gear box and handle. It isn’t much and shouldn’t discourage you from buying this reel. After many years of fishing with Abu spinning reels, I am happy to switch from another casting brand to Abu, for my bass fishing needs.
I bought this reel in December 2014 from Roger's in Liberty, Mo. It is now July 2016 and I have used this reel for lots of fishing. I use also a Lew's speed reel and Shimano Bantam Curado. I spend the winter in Florida fishing and come home to Missouri and fish almost every day. So I spend many hours fishing and I can honestly say that this reel in no way favorably compares to the other two reels mentioned. It constantly overruns; it's already showing signs of bearing wear; and the reel will not engage by turning the handle. I have to press the thumb bar to to engage the reel after casting ever so often. I paid $109 for the reel. In my opinion a hundred dollar reel ought to last more than a year and half. My Shimano has worked well for over 15 years!
I only recently took up bass fishing. I knew nothing about equipt, but wanted to buy my husband higher - end gear for Father's Day, so I had to do lots of research. The Abu Garcia brand came very highly recommended from trusted sources. In my research, I started to become interested, too. The problem is that I am still healing from extensive shoulder and bicep surgery of my dominant arm. I needed really lightweight combos that I wouldn't outgrow as my skills improve. I spent a couple of weeks going to stores and putting every rod/reel combo in my hand that I could. When I went to purchase purchase my husband's Revo SX paired with St. Croix rod, I was amazed. I ended up leaving with a Revo SX for myself as well. Having never used a baitcaster, I was pretty scared but ... MoreI only recently took up bass fishing. Having never used a baitcaster, I was pretty scared but after 5 minutes of practice on a grassy bank, I was fishing with it. Smooth, light, but gets the job done. Easy to use. Hugs my St. Croix Avid Pearl like it was made to. And I know that I'll be using it for years.
Would recommend spending for the sx instead of this one. I have fished with it in the salt hundreds of hours over the last year and caught many fish. However, the thumb knob has started to stick and hesitates on engaging with a fish on--it is grinding into place. I like to thumb the spool a lot fishing around structure and expect it to engage when I need it to. I have been missing fish because of this lately and need to get a different reel to replace it. I regret my purchase at this point and feel I should have spent more for the revo sx in retrospect. I would purchase the revo sx again, but not the revo s...it just does not seem to be built as well. I know the response will be that it is not designed for a saltwater environment, but I rinse them with freshwater ... MoreWould recommend spending for the sx instead of this one. People I fish with on a regular basis have also used various other revos extensively in the salt with good results as well.
I have 3 of the RevoS G3 models I bought soon after they became available (several years ago). They are great reels for ~$100 when I purchased. I give them athorough cleaning internallyevery year or two. They always cast well and handle some of the largest fish I’ve caught with ease. 30+” Reds and many many LMBass over the years. After saltwater use I give them a rinse with fresh water and re-oil the pawl and worm gear. I firmly believe this routine helps the life of the reels.
This reel is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of using, and out of the box it doesn't need much in the way of tweaking to get it casting pretty far. After spending some time spooling it with 30lb braid and tying on a 1/4th oz weight (and later a 1/8th oz), I got to testing this thing and let's just say, you'll have to actively be not paying attention, or trying to make this thing birdnest. Even tying on some lighter weights, with proper break adjustment it'll fling them a mile. I'd recommend only turning on one or two of the centrifugal breaks, and leaving the magnetic break dial for adjusting during wind or lures, because this thing hurls my buzzbaits, frogs and poppers even with some wind upwards of 30 yards, which is more than enough for my topwater ... Reeling, it's quiet and the drag is great also. I doubt you'll apply the full 20lbs of drag by hand, but if you're taking it punching, I'll bet you've got pliers on hand anyway. I have had absolutely no issues with this reel, just another top quality product from Abu. Will most likely buy two more of these reels, one in 8.0:1 and the other in 6.4:1. Let the REVO-lution continue!
So I’ve been playing with these Rees since it came out and feel I can write a genuine review . First thing you notice when holding this reel is the weight , yes a bit on the heavier side but it’s meant for a heavy rod ! No brainer to some but I had to try it on other rods and a couple 7’3 mh I had felt good but not like a heavy abu to go with it and this thing is amazing , it’s smooth to this day and I’ve put it to work ! Caught so many bass (my bigger ones too with no problem at all ) even caught catfish and all my stripers from this season , never had a issue with this reel with everything from 10lb fluorocarbon lil weightless senkos n small jigs to 17lb for all around to heavy 65 lb braid and bigg swim baits and flippin jigs and yankin out grass . It does cast the bigger stuff a lot smoother otherwise kinda got work them brakes which took me a couple trips to really dial in but I like my spool loose so just what comes with it I guess , I mostly use thumb anyways. but the handles are so helpful with those bigger or hard fighting fish this is by far my favorite reel and is a true workhorse of a reel and highly recommend if your looking for a sturdy dependable reel , I love it and yes I’ve tried a lot of different reels not everyone likes abu but for me I’ve never had issues and love their reels , rods ehh not soo much 😂 but I’m picky so ya there’s my rant
