I've been using this lock since it came out and it's now a staple on three bikes in the household. It's hands down the heaviest u-lock I've used and it's a trade off since it's the most durable. I've had two attempted thefts thwarted and have come out to see other cut locks without bikes and still see mine there. The mount onto the bike makes it a lot less weight to carry which is nice but if you're leaving your bike while out in a city (even a safe one like Toronto) this is the lock to get!

Easily the best U lock available today. The Abus 540 is noticeably lighter than it's biggest competitor, Kryptonite, yet continues to offer the same, if not higher, level of security. As well as utilising hardened steel, the lock features a dual-sided locking system, which prevents thieves from taking advantage of a massive weakness in many locks. Locks which only have mechanisms on one side can be warped and bent, allowing thieves around even the sturdiest of mechanisms. The Abus 540 meets gold standard specifications, which are often required by insurance companies. While you'll likely spend a little bit more for this lock, it's certainly worth it. At the end of the day, examine your needs, the weight you're willing to carry, and how much your bike is worth to you.

This item looks strong, but truly isn't. I thought this U lock was sturdy and a good anti-theft deterrent given its weight and intimidating looks. Sadly, a thief cut this lock open and stole my e-bike attached to it. I would invest in another lock outside of this one. Learn from my loss!

I've been using Abus Granit locks on bikes and motorbikes for years because they are a good deterent and solidly built. The x plus 540 is the high end version of the Granit range, the only better D lock above this one would be the Granit Xtreme series which are extremely heavy and bulky, therefore more suited to motorbikes. This comes with the USH side mount bracket which i prefer to the quick release version because the lock has to pass through the bracket to secure it, rather than clip on like the quick release version. The outside has a nice rubberised finish so prevent any knocks on the frame. It's expensive, but at the end of the day it's cheaper to get a good expensive lock, than a cheap lock and a stolen bike
I bought this lock (along with a "Abus Bordo Lite 6055 85cm Folding Lock - maybe overkill?) and am very very happy with it. The square section makes it more resistant to theft and the size and weight of it alone make it feel and look very secure. Living in a high bike theft area means I need a lock that's better than more. The lock is also quite a bit less heavier than I expected. There are plenty of mounting / fixing options (took a bit of time to find the right place to fix it on my Scott MTB, but once fixed it's very secure). Would 100% definitely recommend.
Excellent mechanism. Smooth on and off.Nice coating to protect frame.Large U which is bigger than the kryptonite mini this may or may not be a good thing. For me it allows more flexibility and the option to lock two bikes but does increase the risk of lever attacks.Surprisingly light for a gold secure lock. The EazyKF bracket is a bit of a fiddle to put on the bike and should come with rubber shims which it doesn't. However once on your frame or front forks in my case it is a great way to easily secure your lock in transport. Much better than other frame brackets I've used from kryptonite.
There’s a few smaller cut marks on the lock that clearly thwarted some opportunistic thieves. The only way your bike gets stolen with this is if they’re planning to get it, or they “happen” to have an angle grinder.
The mount is fine, it is a larger u-lock so it may not mount well on certain frames it is tough to design a mount for a highly secure lock that is going to be super universal. Yes it might be a bit harder to carry in a bag but I can assure you it is lighter and cheaper than a new bike. When you have the mount and it is able to work it is fantastic, doesn't move and holds the lock securely. If I need to carry the lock and don't want to use the mount or can't for some reason I will put it on top of my rack and bungee it down. I wouldn't want to commute without a rack and get my back all sweaty, gross! As far as length of shackle if you have extra shackle length you bought a lock that was too long and it is not a fault of the lock. However there are some times when you don't need the extra length and sometimes you do. Get a length that best fits your needs. I have the middle sized one it is excellent for most things and if I have so much extra which is rare I could lock up the front wheel in there as well and take up the slack.
1) the mounting bracket is poorly conceived and does not fit snugly on any part of the hybrid bike frame. (Tried the frame, seat, back triangle). The lock is cumbersome and without a mounting bracket would be very impractical to carry in a bag.2) the shackle seems vulnerable. While the Abus quality reputation gives comfort from lock pickers... There is too much slack when locking this behemoth lock through both bike frame plus rear tire to a pole - the gap just gives more room for a potential thief’s bolt cutters to get in there. Returned.
I bought this lock because it has some of the best reviews in the industry. It seems to work well, however, it's not completely impenetrable.I bought another from MotoInn just a couple months ago and it was cut off my bike by the facilities people at the university where I work in their "bike sweep." I don't know what they used, but obviously it was something power, like a hydraulic cutter. Also, my wife's bike was stolen last year from right outside her building in the middle of the day, using an older U-lock, so that's why I got what seems like one of the best locks possible.
