In this opera, a chorus of wind instruments creates an atmosphere of triumph and heroism that sweeps the listener along in a river of patriotic fervor. The fragrance does something similar, whipping up an exciting, strong opening of mandarin and ginger that convinces us of its vigor. The heart charts the darker side of war, with a murky vetiver mated to a dry, smoky, and resinous frankincense. It smells both holy and unholy. A fresh, minty jasmine radiates a pinprick of light in the gloom, allowing us to glimpse the road home. In the base, creamy tonka adds a vanilla heft and spice to leathery, oriental resins of labdanum and myrrh.
