Advanced Elements Double-Action Hand Pump with Gauge
Electric pumps are convenient and less of a hassle when pumping inflatables, but in order to get the proper firmness required for inflatable boats and SUP's you need a hand pump. Advanced Elements Double Action Pump with Pressure Gauge is a durable, high-flow inflation pump with multiple adaptors and a built-in pressure gauge. This piston air pump has a strong double grip handle and foot pads to aid in easy inflation of boats, SUP's and other recreational inflatable products. Pump comes with a long-corrugated hose and multiple adapters to fit most common valves on inflatables. Pump is bright yellow in color and even has full instructions for use and maintenance printed on the side, so you can't misplace them. Pressure gauge has a 0 to 15 psi readout. Pump measures approximately 18 x 8.5 x 4.5" (45.7 x 21.6 x 11.4cm) and weighs 2.5 lbs (1.1kg).

I've been through two of these in less than a year of owning an advanced elements kayak. It's fine for a few months of use, then the shaft snaps at the lower threads. And even before it snaps and permanently breaks, I periodically have to open it up and screw in and snap on all the parts, as they unscrew and come loose periodically. Sad because advanced elements spends MUCH more care and attention to making their kayaks.

I have only used the pump once so far, but I had some immediate observations.Pro: the pump works well to inflate my Advanced Elements tandem kayak quickly. The Boston valve adapter worked flawlessly. I appreciate the "deflate" option, to get the kayak completely flattened.Con: When the pump arrived, the needle on the gauge indicated "12 psi." Apparently, 12 is the new Zero. I will use the pump, but to get the chambers to 2 psi, I will just have to look for "14 psi" on the pump gauge, or memorize the number of strokes to get each chamber properly inflated. The pump is awkward to use, my back is sore after bending over to inflate the kayak fully. The locking pins on the valve heads are tiny and appear fragile. I do not expect them to be very durable. The loop ... MoreI have only used the pump once so far, but I had some immediate observations.Pro: the pump works well to inflate my Advanced Elements tandem kayak quickly. In particular, I have seen numerous reviews that have mentioned the issue with a faulty gauge, and given Advanced Elements' repeated warnings about precise inflation pressures, it seems like something they should address as a priority.

The pump works as it will blow up my inflatable kayak but the gauge does not work. I called Advanced Element & they told me I need a part that doesn't come with the pump. They sent it to me at no charge but the gauge still will not show any PSI's. I went to LL Bean & William helped me, he called Advanced Element when I was there and they told William the same as me but It doesn't work with the part they sent me. LL Bean staff member William was very helpful & tried to help me but it just can't be done if the pressure gauge isn't working. I give up on the gauge & will have to guess the pressure when filling it up. I wouldn't buy this one.

I read another reviewer who said the PSI gauge wasn't working. I thought it was a stroke of bad luck for the poor guy. But nope. Mine came and same deal. PSI gauge didn't work. It wouldn't budge in the slightest. I read forum posts about backfill pressure, having the valve in the correct position, etc. etc. In the end, the PSI gauge simple didn't work. I contacted support and they are apparently sending a new one my way.Other than that, there is nothing special to this pump. It's like any other generically built double action pump out there. It's a bit stiff to work and I'm a gym rat on the weights 5 days a week even. The only reason I went with this one was bc of the proprietary fittings on the Advanced Elements inflatable kayak. Really a 4.5 and here's why. However, it comes with 6 attachments that come in a Ziplock sandwich style baggie. The hose with the pressure gauge comes by itself. I am concerned with losing the attachments and damaging the hose and gauge. It would be nice if a mesh baggie was provided for these parts that could be attached to the pump. Without one of these attachments your kayak is not getting inflated. The pump works great for inflating/deflating kayaks. For this review, I have only used it 3-4 times so long term durability has not been tested.
We use the battery powered pump initially and the hand pump as a backup and for pressurizing the final few PSI. Thanks for your constant care in our needs as we explore the great state of Michigan with the best inflatable kayak I have ever seen. It was not inexpensive but the thrill of being able to wander the many waterways of Michigan confidently is worth every penny. Thanks!!!
Difficult to use because it is so low to the ground, forcing a pretty bent over position to operate. And I am only 5"2". Would take a long time to inflate an Advanced Elements kayak using only this pump. Get a low pressure/high volume for the first step, then finish up with a pump to get the needed pressure.
The valve adapter for the Advanced Elements kayaks worked PERFECT. The adapter on the NRS Super pump didn't work nearly as well. I returned the NRS.Other adapters fit the small valves perfectly. The only issues I saw was1 - Mud can get stuck in the grooves in the bottom of the pump2 - The valve adaptors can be a hard to remove from the hose. A little silcone spray helped. Gripping the ear where the attachment cord fits on the adaptor helped also3 - The attachment cord that keeps all of the adapters together is flimsy and will eventually break. A longer cord would have been better to make insertion easier. This pump is shorter than the NRS. I thought this would be an issue but it was not hard to us.
Had pump for two years but it broke in a spot that cannot be repaired. Used only to top off inflation, so not even full expected/intended use. Contacted AE support for a resolution, but I’m not hopeful.
Advanced elements requires this garbage spring valve adapter randomly, which means you have to buy this terrible pump instead of using your own. They even admit on their videos how nothing else works for this 'wow we are so special' valve core.Consider another kayak that works with 3rd party pumps if advanced elements tells you you need this garbage.
