I received these headphones in December 2021.PROS: These have decent distance. I leave my phone on my desk, and throughout the day, physically walk to different rooms, behind some doors (even the bathroom!) and only lose signal when I go outside. These sound really good; not audio engineer or Bose quality but good enough for the podcasts I listen to all day. They are loud enough to tune out the constant machinery in my job, but I can hear when someone speaks to me.They hold charge really well. I use them M-F, 6-7hrs each day and they've never cut out on me. So pushing buttons is a hassle now. Pressing the power button can take several tries before it works. Hitting the stop button has a delay. And the charging plug has to be set on the headphones in a certain way, and the shifting latex cover makes it easy to miss a clean connection.I got the regular size, but I really needed the minis because they're big. They hover over my ear holes instead of on my temples. If I wear my hair in a bun, I can reposition them to set correctly on my temples. Because of this, I can hear people talk to me/call my name, but I have to hit the stop button, or yank it off my ear in order to understand what they're saying.Overall, I love the bone conduction technology, and I'd consider this brand again if they're truly updating their models.

I’ll start by saying that for some uses, these are great. I’ve worn headphones and listened to music while falling asleep for as long as I can remember, as my brain has always seemed to spin endlessly without something to chew on. During the pandemic, I’ve taken to using earplugs as my wife gets up early to do a gym class over zoom, and earplugs represent no problem to these.Battery life is typically far better than earbuds, and I can easily get a full day of meetings and streaming stuff in the background while I work without any trouble or any need for a recharge.Sound quality is middling at best. It’s fine for YouTube or watching Netflix, but it’s quite “meh” for music. It’s fine for YouTube or watching Netflix, but it’s quite “meh” for music. However, I’ve had far worse corded headphones before, and given they’re usable with earplugs and that I don’t listen at high volumes at night (I.e. sound quality wouldn’t be great anyway) I’m fine with that. The BEEP in response to volume adjustments or the side button is horrendous, especially if you have earplugs in and have acclimatized to nearly no sound. It’s painful, bordering on stunning in much the same way a flashlight is in a completely dark space after acclimating to the dark. Aeropex might want to consider dropping the volume beeps completely (isn’t the volume getting louder or quieter enough indication?j and dropping the feedback for the side button to half its current level or less. It’s all fairly unnecessary. However, by far the worst part is that I’m on my second pair in 13 months, soon to be a third as the replacement pair are now failing; I poked customer service this morning about an RMA. Both pairs of headphones failed in exactly the same way: they started getting a bit buzzy a few months in, and a few months after that, the transducers are obviously flapping about unconstrained in the blobs on the end. They sound like a bag of nails when I pick them up and shake them, and I can’t listen to them any more. It’s seriously disappointing that the premium price doesn’t appear to result in a premium product. I’ve had far more longevity from one of Anker’s original sets of earbuds (actually from their first Kickstarter under the Zolo brand that they eventuallly gave up on) that cost a fraction for what these things did.I’m not confident that the second RMA pair will last any longer, and once the warranty period is up next year, I’m expecting that I’ll have effectively rented a pair of headphones for 2 years and change.

Amazing Headphones, Great for Sleeping!

After significant research, I finally decided to give bone conduction headphones a try. I am so glad that I did!Upon opening the shipping box, I was amazed to find what I can only describe as the best packaging that I have ever seen on a product. I know it has nothing to do with the product, but it does instill some confidence when the box is rivaled only by the latest flagship phones, complete with a magnetic latch to hold it closed. Needless to say, it went on the shelf.Ok, on to the actual product.Material (8/10): The headphones have what I would describe as velvety feel to them, not really plastic and not rubber, just firm with a soft warm texture. The headphone band is a bit hard and does not flex very much. This is not really a con, but takes some getting used to when sleeping with the headphones.Charging (10/10): The proprietary charging system is one of the nicest features of these headphones. The cable terminals are surrounded by strong polarized magnets. There is no connector to insert or break, just get the cable within 1/2" of the charging port, and it snaps in place and holds on tight in the correct orientation. There is no concern of inadvertently connecting the charging cable backward, or damaging the connector.Sound Quality (7/10, but please read): This was not a big driver for me, since I usually use them with white noise or something that doesn't require high quality. Due to the method that the sound is transferred from the transducer into the bone, I feel that the sound quality is excellent for how they work. If you are planning to compare them to the latest $300 active noise cancelling headphones, you might be slightly disappointed. Music sounds good, but you may miss some minute details, if you are into that.Microphone (10/10): I have currently only used this feature once, to speak with a service technician while I was on a bike ride in heavy traffic. I don't know how I sounded to him, but he had no problems hearing me clearly through the 25mph wind vehicle noise.Battery life (10/10): Other dedicated sleep headphones that I have tried didn't even make it 6 hours overnight. I have yet to drain the battery on the AfterShokz Aeropex. The battery is stated to last 8 hours, but I was skeptical, expecting that this would be based on a low volume. I wear earplugs with them and have them turned up rather high. They have made it through every 8-hour night that I have used them. Once I forgot to charge them before the next night, and topped them up for about 20 minutes before bed and they made it through another full night. I hit the volume button the next morning and they still had medium battery left!Sleep comfort (5/10): These are not made specifically for sleeping and take some experimentation to make work. The band that connects the two sides sticks out quite a bit behind your head, and I thought it would make back sleeping difficult. Fortunately, if you rotate the band up against your head before laying down, it works quite well, and doesn't move the sound pads off of the cheek bone too much. If you use a firm pillow, side or stomach sleeping can be uncomfortable due to the thickness of the sound pads. I was able to make both work by using a softer pillow that can accommodate the pads without much discomfort.Noise Masking (10/10): When worn in conjunction with good earplugs, these things are amazing. First, the earplugs block out most noise. The AfterShokz introduce sound into your cheek bones, which reverberates behind the earplugs, pretty much masking every sound in existence. I would not recommend this if you live alone, as you may not hear a smoke alarm, gun shot, or truck running through your house. In all seriousness, I have not woken up once from snoring or talking in the last few weeks since I purchased these. With earplugs and the best external sleep headphones or noise canceling headphones, I would routinely wake up several times each night.I was not finding any reviews that discussed the important points that I was looking for regarding good sleep headphones, so hopefully this review helps anyone who is looking for the same thing. I may end up purchasing a second pair as a backup to use on my bicycle commute just so I never have to go another night without these.

Clear sound, lightweight, amazing battery life and quality build, a couple suggestions
9 August 2020

I wanted to heavily use the Aeropex before I wrote my review as there are a couple things that showed up with heavier use that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to recognize. My first try at bone conducting headphones was with a cheap pair, around $50, that had me wanting to throw them into the trash. There was NO bass and I could barely hear them, the volume was awful. So I pulled the trigger on the Aeropex and went on the idea that you get what you pay for.I can say that the sound quality on these is wonderful. The lack of bass seems to be simply a limitation of the technology and and how the sound gets to your cochlea BUT there is tremendous improvement over my previous headset. I love the fact that I can skip either forward or backwards with the multifunction ... MoreI wanted to heavily use the Aeropex before I wrote my review as there are a couple things that showed up with heavier use that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to recognize. I love the fact that I can skip either forward or backwards with the multifunction button and the magnetic charging port is super easy…in fact, I just bring the cable near the headset and over half the time, it will pull the cord in and auto connect itself - kind of cool! Furthermore, I rest easy knowing this headset is waterproof and sweat proof. They are very light and comfortable and are very easy to wear all day long. The huge plus for me is the 8 hour battery time - man, these things just keep going! Here are my gripes:First off, the beep that sounds off when connected, changing the volume, disconnecting…yes, it’s too loud and a little abrasive. It’s not as piercing as others have commented (in my opinion) and it is NOT volume dependent, it’s the same volume no matter how low or high you have your volume set. If engineers can modify this, I would recommend keeping it as high as the opening vocal queue, “Welcome to AfterShokz” and if it is already, take it down a couple notches. It is fairly annoying, especially when it sounds off for every single volume push or you need to adjust volume with relaxing music - perhaps a softer attack on the beep would be welcome too.Next, I have encountered frustrating trouble when multi-pairing two devices and maintaining a connection. I have my Aeropex connected to my TV and phone. I think it’s very cool the headset recognizes which device is outputting sound and gives priority to the one that does first. Getting them connected after turning them off or recharging becomes an issue though. In the morning, I’ll try to play some music on my phone and the Aeropex says it’s connected but I hear nothing. In fact, I won’t hear anything from my phone unless I turn on my TV and “wake up” the headset by playing something on the TV and then stopping it. OR, I have to re-pair my phone to get it to work.. Once I do either of those things, I can then hear my phone’s music. I don’t know what’s going on there but it’s a pain.Next, for me at least, I think the multifunction button would do well to have a subtle texture on it - slight bumps, a symbol or stripes for more of a tactile feel. It’s also at a slightly off angle as opposed to 90 degrees from your face, which I had on my original cheaper pair of headphones and found to be really easy to work with.Last, despite the magnetic charging port being super cool, it does limit your options of using a universal micro USB or USB-C cable, which can be found anywhere now. I would guess that the magnetic port enables the device to be fully waterproof, without risking any open ports to the internals - I totally respect that.I’m hoping the build quality lasts well into the future and if I can figure how to keep my two devices continuously connected without said fidgeting, these will be well worth the price for me.

Decent, but lacking.
28 February 2020

I've had quite a few pairs of headphones over the years, in almost any price range you can think of. These are decent for what they do, though, for the price point i expected a bit more clarity and for the built in assistant to perform at a higher level. The sound quality is decent if the environment is quiet, but if you want to be able to hear the music in any kind of environment, you have to turn them up high enough that the vibrations make them super uncomfortable to wear. The wire that runs along the back to connect the two sides does keep tension on the headphones, they definitely aren't coming off while you're getting after it on your workout, or wrestling that bear on Russian t.v. - oh wait - wrong product - they stay in place is what I'm trying to say. The wire that runs along the back to connect the two sides does keep tension on the headphones, they definitely aren't coming off while you're getting after it on your workout, or wrestling that bear on Russian t.v. - oh wait - wrong product - they stay in place is what I'm trying to say. At a normal volume (i.e. office environment, in the car, walking around) they are decent, with the sound being un-muddled for this type of headphone, and still let you hear how badly off key your singing is when you're jamming out to that new Shakira song... no... just me?The water-proofness is a definite plus, as being able to wear them in weather, or the shower is pretty nice. I wore them on a bike ride in the rain recently and they did their job with being able to allow for situational awareness and kept on playing - they don't let the water trickle in your ears like regular earbuds, which is nifty.Battery life is pretty exceptional, easy to charge, and the LED's on the outside are easy to read, letting you know when it's charging or complete from across the room.Pairing was pretty easy right out of the box, no hoops to jump through, ready to go as soon as you turned them on, which was nice, as we all know how much of a pain it can be to get things paired the first time.Build in assistant could definitely use some work, I'd say 1 out of every 5 times that I use it, it actually works. On that note, there's no tone or beep when you long press the button to get to the voice assistant, so it's hard to know if it's actually listening unless you're looking at your device at the same time - would be helpful to have something there just as a notification, like when music is paused or played. The button configuration is simple, clean, very streamlined with no bells and whistles. I prefer a little different of a setup as far as what the buttons actually control and where they are, but to each their own. I do with that the long-press feature on the volume buttons would have been integrated to be able to go back to the beginning of a song, as only the single button allows to skip to the next song - and lets be honest, when you're jamming out to that new song you just found... it's on repeat. Other than that - clean and easy, all the buttons can be found without having to search around for them, and have a solid tactile response when you touch them.Overall, I wouldn't say they knocked it out of the park, but not a bad product. If you're in the market for headphones that let you hear what's going on around you, and still let you listen to your favorite tunes, these will probably suit your needs, and while the price-point is a bit higher than I expected for the level of interface that you're getting, they're still a solid, well-built and finished product.

Great solution for cyclists
22 October 2021

I bought these as I'm an avid cyclist and bike commuter and needed something to allow me to listen to music and audiobooks when riding without compromising my ability to hear my surroundings and maintain safety. I was previously using traditional in-era Bluetooth earbuds and would have to ride with only one in and/or invest in a pair that permitted ambient noise to filter through. While it was a workable solution, it was no ideal as I have unusually waxy ears it seems (TMI, I know) and had to spend at least an hour a week cleaning excess wax off the internal grille of the earbud. Failure to do so would result in the maximum volume of the earbud being still far too quiet to hear anything. Further, I have weirdly shaped ear canals and in-ear buds would often fall out ... MoreI bought these as I'm an avid cyclist and bike commuter and needed something to allow me to listen to music and audiobooks when riding without compromising my ability to hear my surroundings and maintain safety. Failure to do so would result in the maximum volume of the earbud being still far too quiet to hear anything. Further, I have weirdly shaped ear canals and in-ear buds would often fall out or not fit right. The number of times an earbud fell out while putting my helmet on and landed in an unknown-substance puddle on the street is too many to count. Additionally, in colder months, I'd often have to try and reposition the earbud mid-ride with a gloved hand, and found my lack of dexterity made it frustrating and often unsuccessful.Did my first ride with these this morning. First off, bone conduction technology in general is cool as heck, and I really enjoyed not having anything in my ears. Being able to have full awareness of everything around me makes me feel more confident on my daily commute on quite busy and dangerous city streets. With that said, having a completely exposed ear also means that I'm subjected to the full decibel-weight of traffic and ambient noise. Even at the highest volume level, I still couldn't understand the words being spoken by the reader of my audiobook because it was drowned out by the din of traffic. Mentioned it to a techie friend who suggested I look into motorcycle ear plugs, as they are designed to allow enough external noise penetration to maintain safety while reducing the overall burden of traffic noise. I will try that. The only other thing that takes some getting used to is at higher volumes, you feel the vibrations on your skin directly in front of the ears, which can become irritating or ticklish to some. It annoys me, so I try to avoid max volume as much as possible. So, in short, I would recommend these for sure, but the two things that led me to giving only 4 stars are that max volume isn't loud enough for me, and the vibrations at high volumes. I recognize that's how bone conduction works, but wish there was a way to reduce the vibrations we FEEL and prioritize the vibrations we HEAR.

Loved Trekz Titanium and love these even more!
14 April 2020

Some advantages to these over Trekz Titanium:- I think the "tickling/vibration" factor is significantly improved- Sound quality may be slightly better- They come with a little carrying case - it's flexible rubber so not foolproof, but better than nothing (the frame of my Trekz Titanium broke, floating around in my backpack- Super easy to charge with the magnetic charger - I really didn't think this would be a big thing for me, but it is sooo much nicer to be able to just snap on the magnet rather than deal with the tiny charger flap and fiddle with a tiny micro-usb plug - and since it comes with two chargers I can still have one at work and one at home.- Supposedly you can triple press the multifunction button to rewind, but I can't get it to work (maybe I'm not ... MoreSome advantages to these over Trekz Titanium:- I think the "tickling/vibration" factor is significantly improved- Sound quality may be slightly better- They come with a little carrying case - it's flexible rubber so not foolproof, but better than nothing (the frame of my Trekz Titanium broke, floating around in my backpack- Super easy to charge with the magnetic charger - I really didn't think this would be a big thing for me, but it is sooo much nicer to be able to just snap on the magnet rather than deal with the tiny charger flap and fiddle with a tiny micro-usb plug - and since it comes with two chargers I can still have one at work and one at home.- Supposedly you can triple press the multifunction button to rewind, but I can't get it to work (maybe I'm not pressing fast enough.)Disadvantages from Titanium:- These have an annoying loud beep (like annoying to the point where it might damage your hearing) when you press any button and I don't think there's any way to change that- When paired to both my phone and computer, they will constantly beep and disconnect/reconnect to my phone when I'm on a call on the computer (I always have to turn BT off on my phone to avoid this)- No beep sound when you activate Siri - you just have to hold down the button and guess!Excerpt from my Titanium review - true for these too:These are great for bike riding or really anywhere you want to be able to hear the world around you - They get plenty loud enough to hear over the traffic. And when you want to block out the world, just use the included earplugs and you can hear these things great. I love these for listening to audiobooks or even connecting to my computer to use for conference calls at work. I also loved using them, the included earplugs, and a whitenoise app to drown out my snoring friend in a hotel room recently!Pros:- Loud enough to hear anywhere- Include ear plugs- Sound is great for spoken word content and decent for music if you're not picky (I'd say a little better than phone speaker quality)- Microphone on device works great for phone calls- Multifunction button can be held to activate Siri on iPhone (push for play/pause/answer/hangup, double press to skip track)- Volume buttons (I thought all BT headphones had them but I guess not)- Connect multiple devices at once - I didn't think you could, but after a year I just found the trick below- I think the battery life is good. I never really kept track but I guess the advertised 6 hours may be right. They warn you when there's about 10-20 mins left (better than my old ones that didn't warn until about 1 minute)- Good range in my opinion (20-30 feet) but not quite as good as another pair I haveCons (although I don't really consider them cons)- When volume is loud they may slightly tickle, but it's not really noticeable when you're in a situation where you need them loud- Slightly awkward with glasses, but I have no problem as long as I put them on before my sunglassesTo pair two devices at once: (note you can't hear from both at the same time, but the headphones will automatically switch to the device that is providing audio.)1. Start with your headphones turned off.2. Enter pairing mode by pressing and holding the volume+ button for 5-7 seconds, until the device says "Pairing".3. Press and hold the multifunction button and volume+ button for 2-3 seconds. Device says "Multipoint Enabled."4. Pair first device. Device says "Connected."5. Turn your headphones off.6. Re-enter pairing mode by pressing and holding the volume+ button for 5-7 seconds.7. Pair the second device. Device says "Device Two Connected."

Not what I expected
24 November 2023

I bought these because my mom had an extra pair she wasnt using and I fell in love with them. Unfortunately I had to give that pair back to her because the pair she had would no longer charge. So I bought these hoping theyd be as good as the pair from my mom. Her pair charged quickly and lasted more than 8 hours. The sound was very loud which I was pleased about because I wanted to still have that noise cancelation effect. They were also very comfortable to wear. Now the pair I bought (the ones Im doing this review on) arent as good. The sound isnt as loud as I would hope and the quality isnt great. They. harge justas quick but last half the time. (So 4 hours) They are comfortable at first but after a while the back side of my ear actually starts to ache so I have ... MoreI bought these because my mom had an extra pair she wasnt using and I fell in love with them. I want to get another pair but Im a little hesitant considering they are priced a bit high. I use them every day for work. I drive for DoorDash so I like that I can wear these and still hear whats going on around me. I wish they stayed charged as long as it says they should and the sound could be a lot better.

The best set of Aftershokz headphones so far
8 September 2019

Aftershokz' headphones called Trekz Air were by far the best they had made up until that point, but then came along Aeropex headphones. They bring everything we've come to expect from Aftershokz, plus so much more. The water-resistance rating has been increased to the nearly completely waterproof rating of IP68The look and design of the earphones themselves have been changed to essentially be fully sealed, with no holes for music to flow out of or sweat and water from seeping into. This change in design allows for sound to reverberate even more, providing deeper bass but without the vibration feedback. The charging port is now not a port at all - not a MicroUSB, not a USB-C, but a sealed positive/negative contact port which uses its own special cord which is naturally ... MoreAftershokz' headphones called Trekz Air were by far the best they had made up until that point, but then came along Aeropex headphones. If any moisture is detected on the charge port as you attempt to connect the charger, the red power on/off indicator light will flash to indicate it needs to be dried first. On a somewhat negative note regarding this method of charging is that the headphones come with only two cords, and that's it. There are no adapters for MicroUSB or USB-C cables; no instructions on what to do if you need another cable for whatever the reason be. Surely there's a way of asking Aftershokz or a formal way of ordering, but with Aeropex being such a new model, Aftershokz may not have received enough inquiries to create a method for ordering a replacement cord.Anyway, I have been using these headphones for a little over a month now. Overall, I'm absolutely satisfied with them. Some may be upset about the Aeropex' method of charging, but the benefit of having one less part of the headphones for moisture to seep in is a big plus in my opinion.Battery life is something I see as a possible letdown. And that's not due to a decrease in capacity compared to the Trekz Air, but because I don't seem to get any *more* than the Trekz Air which contradicts Aftershokz' claim to have 8 hours of continuous play with the Aeropex versus 6 hours with the Trekz Air.Still, battery life on both headphones is very good. Even after a month of rotating my Aeropex out with my Trekz Air headphones and vice versa as the other headphones charge, I don't notice the increase in the battery life of the Aeropex headphones. Now for the sound quality:It isn't so substantial that I want to get rid of my Trekz Air headphones, but I will say that I feel like I need to be more careful when I'm sweating while using them, whereas with the Aeropex I don't worry about sweat, rain, the sprinklers... anything that can throw water at me. I've already walked through a downpour where my clothes and hair were dripping wet but my Aeropex' were absolutely fine and the other caller heard only my voice! Call quality on the Aeropex is definitely a significant improvement over the Trekz Air. Callers talking to me on the Trekz Air always complain that they hear every sound in the background. Well I'd be lying if I didn't say just how well the Aeropex' noise cancellation is. I could be on a call inside a grocery store like Walmart and the caller on the other end of the line cannot hear anything aside from my voice and what I myself am doing.

good, but not great...for the cost
4 June 2020

I like to listen to music or podcasts while cycling, but I also like to hear cars and other outside noises while doing so. It seems like most bluetooth headphones these days are all about noise cancellation, so it's hard to find a good pair of headphones that allow in ambient noises.I've been using Plantronics Backbeat Fit's for about 3 years and they are great for my environmental awareness needs while providing a good sound, but I wanted to try something new. Bone conduction technology sounded interesting, and pretty much what I am looking for in a headphone, so I went with a pair of Aftershokz Aeropex, which are probably the current best in this category. The Aeropex sound good for a bone conduction headphone, the bass is lacking, but I knew that before buying ... MoreI like to listen to music or podcasts while cycling, but I also like to hear cars and other outside noises while doing so. I like the physical buttons, very useful! They look nice in my opinion, and are fairly discreet and lightweight, you can almost forget that you have them on. They come with two charging cables, and nice accessories like a carrying case and a fanny pack...if that's your thing.Although I like the Aeropex, I don't think they are better than the Backbeats in a few ways. In one way they are subpar, is with sound leakage. The Aeropex leaked much more sounds than the Backbeats at a equal volume. This isn't a issue outside, but is in a quiet environment with other people around. I would like to use my headphones for more than just when I'm out riding my bicycle, so for me this is an issue. The Aeropex also lose in the durability department. The Backbeats can flex almost like a rubber band, but the Aeropex are much more rigid in comparison. I can get the Backbeats in a pants pocket, but I wouldn't do the same with the Aeropex out of fear of permanently deforming them. The magnetic proprietary charging cable is pretty cool, but ultimately its just another cable I'll have to pack away when I travel.Where the Aeropex did have the advantage over the Backbeats is in battery life, 8 hours vs 5 hours, although It's questionable as to if the Aeropex gets a true 8 hours, it's still definitely gets more than 5. Also the Aeropex lets in more ambient noise, but almost at a level that its hard to tell the difference. They both have the behind-the-head band, you get used to the band, it's mostly out of the way, but in 2020 I would like a headphone that does away with the band, I'm sure they will get bandless eventually. For now I think I'm sticking with the Backbeats, and maybe upgrading to one of their new wireless models. They sound better, let in a similar amounts of ambient noise, and are priced better. I'll keep my eyes open for future iterations of bone conduction headphones, but as of now, I'm not impressed.
