Aftershokz Air - "It is what it is"

If you NEED/want to be able to hear your surroundings AS you listen to music or podcasts, etc. (for safety, cycling, etc.) then you might be interested in this product. That's it. Don't get them if you want sound QUALITY while listening.Long Story: I can see the benefits of being able to "be open" to your environment (we've all been on a bike or jogging/walking and been surprised by something like a car or dog coming up on us) but, full disclosure, I'm an audio nerd / music lover and if I'm listening to MUSIC I'm doing it for the quality/enjoyment. I would never listen to music to drown out my surroundings when biking, that's just not proper safety. I would never listen to music to drown out my surroundings when biking, that's just not proper safety. And if I'm out on a trail/in the woods, I prefer to hear nature around me.My tests were around the house, listening to music, raking leaves in the yard, going for a walk in a local park with both music and podcasts. I did use them for some guided meditation audio where it's nice to listen and be able to hear house/environmental sounds around you which is part of meditation focus for distractions, when you don't want a speaker to disturb anyone around you and don't want to completely block out environment around you.SOUND QUALITY is "just not there for ME" with this product. It's an open-air speaker driver concept which simply points little speakers at your ear canals. If you're old enough to remember the "Walkman" foam covered headsets with the metal headband, this is it. It's a speaker that sits over your ear but not inside, so allows environmental sound in. The "Bone Conduction" is "hey nice try but...." - I found if you use both hands to PRESS DOWN into your ear/mandible bone area where they sit, you can get some additional quality and a bit more bass response but... short of strapping a velcro strap or electrical tape around your head to do so... it's NOT bone-conduction purely, FOR CLARITY - little speaker holes sending sound to your ear PLUS the silicone pads contacting your facial bones to provide sound boost."it is what it is" - catch them on sale if you're at all interested.I equate them to the same thing as having a small bluetooth speaker around your neck so the sound stays with you as you move around and can hear people/things around you.**did not test any voice-call features; no phone calls etc.**did not keep long enough to test any kind of battery life but in my couple hours of using them it stayed at 100%PROS:~product fits comfortably, I would use these for in the office listening to podcasts / internet radio etc. And quickly be able to remove them/put them back on. Super light silicone headband stays put and barely noticeable - did not experience the discomfort or headaches others noted.~no interference / good range! Unlike my main bluetooth earbuds that drop in/out when my phone is simply in my pocket and walking/biking, these kept solid connection through several rooms of my house and down to the basement while phone was upstairs in the living room~simple pairing. Thanks for making an easy-to-pair process!CONS:~sound quality. "It is what it is." - you're not buying these for audio quality. They're not HORRIBLE, but be aware. For voice-focused material like podcasts or "talk radio" okay they'd be fine because that audio frequency range picks up well to the ear. But in noisy environments/heavy traffic, you're going to lose your audio here and there BECAUSE you're open to your environment.~button controls. They're tiny. The "multifunction" button on the left side is easy to access for pause/play actions. But the right-side volume up/down/power button set are miniscule, AND... on the BOTTOM of the headband on that side of the ear. What does that mean ergonomically? Take your right hand and cup it and place it over your right ear. Would you want to press tiny buttons, barely raised above the surface, with your thumb? Sure you will eventually develop muscle memory for your needs but I would rather use the more tactile index finger versus thumb to press a tiny button.Full disclosure: one cannot expect a set of "headphones" to deliver quality sound when the design is "a bunch of toothpick size holes" shooting audio out in the direction of your ear, and if you actually check out where they sit, they sit in FRONT of your ear and 'the little speaker holes' are pointing at/contacting the little piece of flesh in front of your ear canal and not actually pointed AT your ear canal in a straight shot. Sure, you can place the speaker part of the headphones directly OVER your ear canal but you lose low end frequency and it just sounds "more mid rangey" and then...blocks some ambient around you as a result.Again, if you're in NEED of a product that A) allows you to hear environment around you and B) you still WANT to listen to audio, go for it! Grab them on sale and enjoy! If you're any kind of "audio snob" you're not going to like these. These are purely marketed to cyclists/athletes/people working out because the headband stays put and is super light.

The new version had a titanium band and wasn't glued together.Second set, the new titanium band ended before the earpieces, which were just rubberized plastic. This piece broke while on my head one day. They still worked fine, they just weren't comfortable anymore because I could feel the broken bit against my temple. I realized what was wrong when I took them off to adjust my glasses. This new version, the titanium band continues all the way through to there, so that won't happen again.I've never had a complaint about the audio quality, and it's gotten a little bit better with each version of their product so far.Yes, bass does not come through very well over ambient noise (road noise, wind, power tools, conversation, etc). I don't take anything away for that, because this is what they're designed to do: let you hear the world around you while still enjoying your music without annoying everyone else around you. Of course that's going to wipe out the frequencies easiest to interfere with.If I want the audiophile experience, I'll dig out the studio headphones I use with my computer. These are great for wear while at work, on the road, hiking in the mountains, etc. I'd wear them fishing, but I don't think they're rated for being submerged, and small boats can capsize, so I dig out the cheapo earbuds for those days. The only thing I dislike about this current version is that they haven't switched to USB-C yet, so I have to look closely at the end of a long day at work to make sure I insert the micro-usb the right direction. That probably hadn't taken off yet during the design phase on this generation, so I'm not going to knock a star off for it.Aftershokz clearly cares about its product and what their customers' experiences are, as they keep making their product just that little bit better, solving what I imagine are the most common failure points in the previous generation every time they update the design. As long as they keep doing that, they have a customer for life right here. That's the kind of respect for the end user experience that more companies need to adopt!

Its like attending casual concert while conversing
30 June 2023

The first time i used it, i felt like i was in a concert. Sometime i forget i even have that on. As a mailman, i am always on the street walking. I couldn’t keep my headphones on because i had to constantly greet people on the street. Now, its like the music is playing in the background without interupting my conversion. The sound quality is pretty nice as well. It doesnt have that much of a bass boost like some brand headphones. But, it doesnt loose out on sound quality with most brands.

Not on par with the Aeropex Aftershokz headset.
20 March 2022

This headset is cheaper than the Aeropex Aftershokz headset for a reason! Aftershokz clearly functions primarily by bone conduction. This headset not so much. It is more of an external speaker located in front of one's ear canal.I truly have unilateral hearing reduction due to otosclerosis, not nerve deafness. With the bone conduction of Aeropex Aftershokz I hear sound equally R and L. With the AfterShokz Air, I barely hear the sounds in my R ear because it provides much less bone conduction and more air conduction to the ear.Of note, the Aeropex is waterproof, which means that I can wear it in the shower and listen to news/music. Not really feasible with the AfterShokz Air.For me, it is well worth the extra cost to buy the Aeropex AfterShokz rather than the ... MoreThis headset is cheaper than the Aeropex Aftershokz headset for a reason! Open ears, sweatproof, secure and light. Ideal for sports.
20 July 2021

Light, secure, open and sweatproof. First up, these are NOT high fidelity headphones in terms of sound quality, so don't expect the same boominating bass you'd get from circumaurals or the in-earpluggy sort. This is a SPORTS oriented headset and is ideal for my purposes in this respect. The bone-conduction drivers sit on the cheekbones, leaving ears completely open to the ambient environment. This has the advantage for me of not rendering a percussive hit with each footstep like I get with in-ear and some circumaural headphones will. Also with ear canals fully open, they do not fill up with sweat like used to happen with my in-ear 'phones on hot days. Sound quality is perfectly adequate for most music, and indeed is ideal for speech. However with ears wide open, ... MoreLight, secure, open and sweatproof. Also with ear canals fully open, they do not fill up with sweat like used to happen with my in-ear 'phones on hot days. Sound quality is perfectly adequate for most music, and indeed is ideal for speech. However with ears wide open, sounds from the surroundings come in completely unattenuated so the headphones have more work to do. Turning these up full doesn't so much hurt the ears as make the cheeks tickle. A very odd sensation. Microphone quality is also very decent with good noise cancellation in noisy environments. Bluetooth connectivity to a single device is very simple. This headset can be connected to two devices simultaneously but this involves some "multi-point-pairing" gymnastics. Not massively more complicated though. Battery life is satisfactory so far. I spent a good seven hours listening to music, so I think the rated 6Hr talk time refers to using it as a phone headset where it is transmitting too which will doubtless slurp more battery. So it should be plenty enough for marathon distance on a single charge. As usual with these ad-hoc reviews, I have only been using the thing for about a week so I can't vouch for its longevity. So far, so good with this though.

Reliability and Durability Lacking
28 July 2021

I love the headphones when they are working. The first set stopped charging after 11 months of use. Warranty claim was fairly simple and the replacement came in just a few days. After 8 months of using the replacement pair, The mic stopped working. I cannot use the headset for phone calls at all. I use the headphones primarily for work (making calls to IRS and other taxing authorities.) I do not use them while working out or any other type of activities. I am probably the lowest impact user of this type of product and each set I have had still lasted less than a year. Because I notified Aftershokz of the issue 52 days later than the 2 year mark from original purchase, all they could offer is a 20% discount on my next purchase. . . .I probably will not make another ... MoreI love the headphones when they are working. The cost is too high to rationalize for less than a year of use. If you have the money to throw around and don't mind paying a premium for new headphones frequently, then you will love this product. Otherwise, stick to the $20-$30 options out there.

Shokz Trekz Air
28 September 2022

I love these headphones. I am deaf on one side and with these I can hear clearly without blocking external sounds on the good side. And it connects to two Bluetooth devices at once without resetting and so I can use it with my computer and then just tap my left ear side to answer phone calls. Not a lot of range, so be warned, if you wander they will disconnect, but just restart them to reconnect. Note: Other Shokz models require resetting to move from one device to another. This is the only one I've found that works smoothly on two devices at once. Love it for that.

Solid purchase, pay attention to moisture

Solid exercise/cardio headphones. Wanted to give 4.5 but can't do that apparently, so 4 it is, since they easily got the 4 but didn't get the 5.I use these on my runs. They do sound a little "tinny" when you first turn them on, but still, I wasn't looking for Bose, just something to hear my podcasts and Pandora without struggling with a wire or buds that constantly pop out. I played with the volume on my phone and found around 60-66% is my sweet spot. One thing I've noticed and appreciate is that the sound doesn't seem to fluctuate in and out when I'm running, like would happen so much with earbuds. Once set, the volume stays pretty constant no matter my pace/intensity.When in use, I can hear my surroundings relatively well - enough to know traffic is coming when ... MoreSolid exercise/cardio headphones. One thing I've noticed and appreciate is that the sound doesn't seem to fluctuate in and out when I'm running, like would happen so much with earbuds. Once set, the volume stays pretty constant no matter my pace/intensity.When in use, I can hear my surroundings relatively well - enough to know traffic is coming when I'm about to cross the street, or hear a bike coming up behind me. If someone tries talking to me, I have to pause the sound to concentrate on them - that's not a knock on the headphones, just saying.Through nine workouts I've had one day of minor issues that haven't come up since.Days 1-2: two four-mile easy runs. I felt the headset bounce ever so slightly when I first started, but it felt like they quickly (within the first .1 mile) adjusted or fell into place or whatever, and I had no issues with them at all the rest of the runDay 3: 7.5 mile intense interval workout. At about mile 6, the sound cut out for maybe two seconds before coming back - not picking up where it left off but like someone had hit mute. It did it once more on the run before getting home. Once home and just before I took the headphones off, the bluetooth connection was lost and the sound started coming through the phone. The headphones were soaked with sweat, and I started to worry I'd gotten them too wet, but after drying them off, waiting an hour then charging them back up, they turned on and connected and played just fine. I also wonder if the bluetooth on my phone was having issues at that time, but I haven't had any problems with that connection before or since. I have not been able to reproduce any of this yet.Days 4-5: easy 4 mile and 5K. No issues.Day 6: Easy 8 miles. Light rain, I was leary about wearing them in the rain for so long after the other day, but it was a light drizzle/mist and decided to chance it. No issues at all, never once stuttered or stopped.Days 7-8: Easy 4 miles. No issues.Day 9: 5 mile intense interval workout. Remnants of hurricane were passing through all day. Rain was harder than during the long run the other day but still light, until towards the end when the main body started to move in. I was worried it was raining too hard and they'd short out or something before I reached the house, but they never once stuttered or stopped. As their website says, these headphones are water RESISTANT, not waterPROOF, so during light rains you should be ok to use these but during harder storms you should use your best judgement on taking these out. I wonder if I sweat too much that one day it had issues, and if so I'm glad they seemed to bounce back after a pat with the dry cloth and some airing out. And as mentioned maybe the bluetooth connection on the phone was acting up that day but that would have also been a one-off. I'd like to give these 5 out of 5, but until I can figure out why they might have been cutting out like that I'm knocking it down to 4.5.

These are the best headphones I have ever used for running! Over 100 miles already... love them!
11 December 2019

First, I want to disagree with people who complain about the sound quality of these headphones. If you buy these headphones and are expecting the quality of a pair of noise cancelling over the ear headphones, you need to check your expectations. These are very inexpensive, bone conducting headphones, and for the cost and the type of headphones, they sound amazing! I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3s and they are by far the best sounding headphones I have owned, but they cost me almost $300 and I could never wear them running. The only quality the AfterShokz Airs are missing is the dept of the bass frequencies, but still for around $100 they still sound amazing. The only quality the AfterShokz Airs are missing is the dept of the bass frequencies, but still for around $100 they still sound amazing. I am giving them 5 stars for sound, because subjectively they over performed for the cost and type of headphones, and were better than I was expecting.I have not used these headphones for phone calls yet, and I can imagine they aren't the best for that because they do allow all the surrounding sounds to enter your ears, but I am sure they will work well with all things considered.Second, I have been searching for a good pair of wireless headphones for running that were comfortable, allowed me to still hear my surroundings, and were capable of handling hours of exposure to sweat. These headphones filled all my needs. These headphones keep the tunes running for hours, you barely feel them, and you can still enjoy your music while hearing the world around you.I recently ran a half-marathon with these headphones when it was 27 degrees F outside. I had to wear a winter hat to keep my head from getting cold and was able to wear the hat over my ears with total comfort. Surprisingly the winter hat actually made the sound better, as it help the headphones tighter to my head, and muffled some of the outside noise. No other earphones would have allowed that. Pod types would have been uncomfortable jammed into my ears, and over the ear types would have been muffled or I would have left my ears exposed to the cold. I have run for hours and hours on a treadmill, where my sweat builds up much faster, and these headphones were soaked at times, but they worked great, stayed in place, were comfortable, and they still look and function perfectly. All in all these headphones are well worth the money, and if you get a bad pair, give the company a chance to send you replacements. (It hasn't happened to me, but I have read a bunch of reviews about it.) For runners... get these now. Your running will never be the same!
