With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the AirPort Extreme Base Station takes Wi-Fi speeds over the top. You can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps - triple the previous 802.11n standard. Which means up to three times faster Wi-Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80 MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. And if you have 802.11 a/b/g/n devices, AirPort Extreme maximizes that connection as well. What you do with all that extra speed is up to you. AirPort Extreme features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi. That means it transmits at both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies at the same time. So no matter which band your wireless devices use, they will automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance.

This Wi-Fi router is just what I wanted. The Apple AirPort Extreme came in the original box with all accessories. Installing and configuring this router could not have gone smoother. This was my first experience with the Apple AirPort system. The AirPort utility software was intuitive and the process was mostly automatic. After I reset the router to restore the default settings, the software identified the device and went to work. Now everything in our home is connecting to the network with no hassles or glitches. Even my balky Canon MP620B printer finally connected once I remembered that "Bonjour" was in the Safari bookmark bar. In short, this router is in great condition and it works like a charm.

After years of struggling with unstable wireless connections, hunting for a frequency that didn't fall over all the time, repeaters, boosters, and just about everything I could think of, I decided to try seperating the wireless from the Fritz!box that cost me a fortune from Congstar, to see if that helped, after all every modem I ever had seems to have poor wireless, maybe That's Just how wireless is? A last effort! It just worked! Instant wonderful wireless, that hasn't skipped a beat in all the time I have had it. If you are thinking whether to buy one, don't hesitate a moment longer. Amazing. I've owned this product I would say around a month. The setup wasn't as bad as some people say and I didn't mind having to download software since I am on a Windows computer after all. The build quality is really nice and the extreme weighs around 2 pounds. I'm currently using it in bridge mode since we already have another router in my household, so I haven't been able to test it's capabilities as a router quite yet. This router will need to be connected to a modem to be used as a router, otherwise it will only operate in bridge mode since it will detect another NAT device on the network. So far it hasn't crapped out on me and gives me a solid signal all over my house. So far it hasn't crapped out on me and gives me a solid signal all over my house. For the people that complain about only having 3 gigabit ethernet ports; if you seriously need more ports just buy a unmanaged switch or two and stop whining. I have it currently connected to a Netgear JGS524 24 port rackmount switch, with one line in from the primary router and one line out to the WAN port of the extreme. I've tested the USB port for network storage with a small USB drive and the transfer speed for files over the network was a little slow, but then again doing file transfers to any hard drive over wifi will be slower than doing it on a wired connection. It should be mentioned that the extreme only supports HFS, HFS+, and FAT32 formats for an external drive and doesn't support exFAT or NTFS formats. I haven't tested the USB port with a printer at all, so I can't comment on that. The unit does tend to run a little warm and I mean a little not a lot, but so far I haven't noticed any performance issues because of it. Just to give you an idea of the signal coverage; I'm currently connected to the extreme writing this review in my bedroom upstairs with the extreme in the basement in an average sized house and there are no signal issues whatsoever as I sit here typing away. Overall this has been a great router for my home network and even though it is a little expensive, don't write this router off completely if you're currently shopping for a router. Thanks for reading my lengthy review.

I needed to extend an existing WiFi network in my aged parents-in-law's house from an existing Apple Airport Router via Ethernet cable. This was a cinch to install, as long as you connect up the LAN & WAN ports correctly, Apple's set-up software does the rest. You have the option of extending an existing network, my choice, or creating a separate network. It is a crying shame that these Apple Routers are no longer made, as they are extremely stable pieces of kit and as long as you connect Apple Router to Apple Router are very easy to install.
Running the latest Apple firmware this dual band router/Access point/NAS/Gigabit Switch is great. Plenty of settings preferences without looking cluttered. I use it as an Access Point and Switch whilr providing WiFi at the front of the house. I get file sharing/Media Streaming at home which my ISP router can't do. Although used it's clean with official AC Adaptor and unboxed. Works perfectly and is very sleek. A competitively priced solution to mesh or range extender devices.
Yes, these AirPort Extreme routers are older now, but theyre still great. Theyre rock solid and I have never needed to restart it, unlike virtually every other router Ive owned or managed. And they have great antennas, providing great reach. Finally, Id only get the newer models (5th gen or better), which are about the same price yet more capable - thats the A1408 version. Beware, the older models look identical except for the markings.
I bought this in tandum with my X32 Mixing Desk, so that i could connect the desk to an Ipad and control it wirelessly on the Ipad during shows. And whilst it works great now, if you are also keen on using it as a wireless reciever for Non-Wifi networks, make sure to download the Airport app! Otherwise the reciever throws a hissy fir without internet and refuses to work. But it’s as simple as hitting “ignore” on the alert in the app and it works perfectly!
When it comes to Storing Apple TimeMachine backups on a NAS you need this. Works great and out of the box including access management. Will never understand why Apple stopped making these devices. Please note that I am not using this as a router. I use it as a network-attached device plugging in either a USB only printer (works great with USB label printers too) or a USB hard drive for NAS. It's so hard to find a router or another type of a device like it that supports HFS+ (with MBR) formatted drives.
Apple quality and a great performing WI-Fi router. The Extremes work as a primary wireless router, or as a range extender with typical Apple ease of installation and operation. This one is a range extender for my original 5th generation Airport Extreme that covers the entire house (3 stories of rebar reinforced concrete with over 3600 sq') I needed the extender because my shop building is about 100' from the house and thus was at the extreme limits of the primary Airport. Putting the new unit at the closest shop wall to the house allowed the two Airports to work together flawlessly. Normally you can expect a repeater to cut data transfer speeds in half, but since the devices used in the shop have slower data transfer speeds anyways, they deliver the same speeds when ... MoreApple quality and a great performing WI-Fi router. Normally you can expect a repeater to cut data transfer speeds in half, but since the devices used in the shop have slower data transfer speeds anyways, they deliver the same speeds when connected to either Airport. I notice no difference in connection speeds to the internet using the Airports, or ethernet cables and being able to connect numerous devices via Wi-Fi is much simpler and more efficient. The "LAN" ethernet port allows those devices that don't have wireless capabilities to be added as an ethernet cabled LAN and share everything equally with the wireless devices. I have an ethernet LAN in the shop connected to the "extender" and another in the house connected to the primary Airport. The USB port allows the connecting of any USB capable printer as a network printer for use by all devices. I have a second USB printer that I will be adding to the shop Airport and that will save the walk to and from the house when I need to print something for the shop.
Bought this A1408 to supplement my existing Virgin router. Works well in bridging mode, giving a stronger wireless signal upstairs and additional Ethernet ports. I connected the two with Ethernet. Fairly easy to set up with the airport utility readily available on the internet. Also have an old USB drive connected to the USB port giving (slow - USB 2.0) network drive availability when I eventually mastered how to format the drive as a Mac, but on a windows machine.
