However there are a few things I would say to anyone considering this instrument: I've been aware of the EWI series since Michael Brecker began playing the instrument many years ago. I think Sax players were fascinated by it; they could now make weird sounds like the electric guitar players. I decided on ordering the EWI 5000 for three reasons: A) I now live in an apartment and cannot play any loud instruments. C) I was first chair trumpet in high school band, could play all the Herbert Clarke solos of old and I noticed that on the latest EWI it could accommodate brass player fingerings. Right away, I realized using the brass fingerings was a nightmare. I have played sax a little over the years and looked at those fingerings. I opted to go with the standard EWI 5000 fingerings and quickly learned to play the C scale and then the chromatic. This proved to be much easier than trying to use the awkward brass valve fingerings. So I dug out my old Arban Edition for trumpet and was delighted to see that it could be used for reed instruments as well.I'm now playing the beginning exercises in the book and can play several jazz "standards" by ear. I'm slowly reading all the instructions from the manual I downloaded from the Akai site. I use head phones to practice and also sometimes play through a small amp. It would probably be very difficult for someone with no musical instrument experience to learn to play the EWI 5000 without an instructor. However, it suits my needs well and gives me an artistic avenue to explore in my retirement years. I am 72 years old.

I really like the EWI as a wind synth/controller. If youre using this as a MIDI controller, its excellent. As a synth, its not as good as the EWI 4000s, but if you like the built in sounds, then this unit is gold. The wireless receiver is especially handy, and I find myself playing it every night. Unlike the EWI 4000s, this unit uses wavetable synthesis. That can be good or bad, depending on your take. Personally, I could ask for more control over the sounds, and Im disappointed theres no sound font support and no way to even do actual synthesis using the internal sounds. You can only control the LFOs and envelopes - no dual-oscillator modulation, like an analog or hybrid synthesizer. Having said that - the internal sounds are pretty good, easily good enough for most people to learn with and play in a band. The only shortcoming I see is the lack of good bass samples (thats something the EWI Solo fixes). In all, if I was looking for a new wind synth, Id pick either this or the EWI Solo. The Solo has more sounds (200), but doesnt have the cool integrated wireless.

I must admit, the first time I unboxed the instrument, I was amazed at the build quality. It has some heft, the keys are properly and ergonomically placed and you know Akai really took their time to perfect this wind controller. But as a long time saxophone player, the first time I actually played some scales, I was quite disappointed - it didn't feel like a saxophone. I was beginning to regret my purchase and thought about exchanging it for the WX5. So I gave it a few more days. Days turned to weeks, and I am beginning to appreciate this instrument. Keep practicing those scales, breathing with the mouthpiece and you realize how this is such an amazing wind controller. Keep practicing those scales, breathing with the mouthpiece and you realize how this is such an amazing wind controller. I made a mistake thinking that this is a replacement for a saxophone in an apartment situation. In reality, you should think about how this instrument can be an extension to your musical endeavors. The possibilities you can do with the sounds and playability are endless. There are a few usable synths prebuilt, but I suggest using the Akai EWI 5000 Editor to really play and edit your sounds then save it to the user bank. Also there are synths out there that can be used if you plug the EWI as just a midi wind controller; unfortunately you can't upload other synth sounds into the controller. Definitely give it some time to get used to the instrument especially moving from one octave to another. Keep practicing and you'll appreciate that there's hardly any moving parts here. I was opposed at it first since horns have that tactile and key feedback. But with the touch sensitivity, it really felt I was playing an instrument from the future. Again, you just have to get used to it - think about when mobile phones shift from physical keyboards to the modern phones we have today. And here I am today still keeping my purchase and writing a review. I thank Akai for making a top-notch wind controller and continuing the support for the modern electronic wind musician.

Overall:Itʻs good for those that knows how to use it. Itʻs a challenge for those that doesnʻt find it easy to play. The back part is a scroll bar, where it had to be toggled. I also found it better to tape the sensitive parts with electric tape. The mouth piece doesnʻt have a reed part and it seems more of a narrow opening. I got it because I was wanting to play it as a saxophone, but realized that itʻs not for me.However, itʻs well made and it looks nice.

I'll start with the cons. It was difficult to play. The mouthpiece felt like 98% resistance so it was like holding my breath. The keys do not move at all so it was hard to learn based on feel. You have to use your ears. The programmed sounds were not of the quality I'd expect for how expensive this item is. The multiple octave keys are great for range, but it's quite difficult to move across them without causing a blip in the sound. The pros. It's high quality and sturdy. Very receptive to dynamics and vibrato. Very customizable. I think if you're using this EWI to compose or do anything with midi, it's a very powerful tool if you're not able to learn piano.Personally, I was looking for something I could play in my apartment with headphones since my saxophone is ... MoreI'll start with the cons. Pros and Cons as Replacement for Yamaha WX5
21 February 2021

I've been driving software synthesizers with a WX5 for years, and it's starting to get worn-out. They don't make them any more, of course, so I researched the alternatives. Had seen EWIs used to great effect live by musicians like Michael Brecker. Ordered the EWI5000 instead of the EWI USB because of the greater range and build quality- the built-in sounds weren't important to me. Wireless seemed like a nice thing. From that perspective...Pros:Action is VERY fast, as there are no moving parts - it's about electrical contact with the keys. The roller scheme for switching octaves is strange if you're used to saxophones and the WX, but it too can be really fast.Solid build.Cons:Pitch bend is MUCH less natural and expressive than on the WX. The WX has both a pressure sensor on the reed and a spring-loaded pitch wheel. The EWI's mouth sensor is less subtile and by default is mapped to the modulation depth wheel, not pitch, and the pitch bend up/down controls for the right thumb are far apart, making it really hard to do graceful up/down vibrator around a note. The wireless capability only works for audio, not MIDI. I had not realized this when I bought the instrument, and was disappointed - MIDI requires a lot less bandwidth than audio. It's pretty heavy compared to the WX (or the EWI USB) because of all the electronics for the built-in audio, wireless, etc.Overall:No regret on this purchase. I can do things with the EWI5000 that I could not reliably play on my WX. But there are also things that are easy to do on the WX that are hard/impossible on the EWI, so I'm not going to be able to retire the old Yamaha just yet.

Versatile instrument!
8 April 2019

Amazing instrument with endless versatility. Well built, and an abundance of built-in features. I have not tried using any external software yet to add sounds to the bank, but there are 100 built-in instruments already. Some do not sound like the real instrument, but some are spot on, and I accept that it's just the nature of digital modeling. I will say that it is not intuitive and you need to seriously read through the instruction manual, and even then may need to refer to YouTube videos, but if you have the patience, you will love it once it is calibrated to your playing style. I find it most useful for practicing since I can throw on headphones and play without bothering anyone.
