I have owned TOTL phones from the "Big 3" manufacturers (Beyer Dynamic, Sennheiser, and AKG). In my opinion the K812 outperforms the HD800s, and the T1, It is more "present" with more body and tonal richness than the Senn. or Beyer. It images better then either, and although the soundstage may not be quite as wide as the HD800, it is plenty wide while providing more depth of field. To me the Senn sounds too diffuse. While transparency is desirable, sound needs to have some substance to be realistic. To me the K812 offers a terrific balance that provides a very musical listening experience. Up to now I was wireless fan, (Sennheiser Momentum Wireless, Sennheiser RS180), listening to mp3 music, mainly from Spotify, or CD rips. The problem with this headphone is that you realize how limited quality was every piece of the sound chain that you were using before. You can clearly hear the difference between mp3 and CD. You can clearly hear the difference between different players (iPhone6s, LG G6 with hifi dac, Fiio3, Denon F107 mini hifi). Fortunately, despite all earlier fears, they all produce much nicer sound with the AKG K812 than with other headphones I have heard before, including an AKG K502. I am afraid I opened a window to a new audio world - bye bye MP3, welcome FLAC.

I like the head phone! it has great sound and detail. Unlike it's brother the K712 pro, it does not come with two different size cables. Big mistake at this price range. It would be great if AKG would include two cables in this price range. The 812 has more detail then the 712; however, over-all the k712 is the better buy. The 712 sounds great for all kinds of music. Would I buy the 812 again? Yes I would. 1500 big ones is a lot of money for this head phone.

These headphones are exactly what I was looking for when I purchased them almost 30 days ago. Basically I like everything about them: The sound is perfect for what I do in the studio, that is a sound and video editing very clear and transparent with a lot of detail. I think these are the best headphones I have ever owned. The AKG K812 headphones are very comfortable, well/solid built, and easy to adjust while on your head. I also like very much a stand that comes with these headphones. I purchase the headphones with the AKG HP4E 4-Channel Headphone Amplifier - all works great!

Incredible headphones you can wear for hours.

I have owned these for 4 years now and they are simply amazing. They are so lightweight with minimal pressure from the headband which has an adjustable latching mechanism so you can set the size for your own head. Sound quality is outstanding. Slightly towards the brighter side of neutral. Imaging is razor sharp and the soundstage very large but realistic, unlike Sennheiser HD800. Bass depth is good and carries a bass line well and is very taught with many layers. Treble is very insightful which can also show up a bad recording as being harsh. Sensitivity is good and they can be used with a portable device with good results. To sound their best, a good amp is a must. No need to spend a fortune as a JDS Labs Objective 2 headphone amp for only 150 will out-perform ... MoreI have owned these for 4 years now and they are simply amazing. All in all, a great headphone.

K812 Sounds Superb
16 April 2020

When I first started my headphone journey over a dozen years ago, my first serious one was the K702, which I enjoyed foe several years before trying other company’s offerings, both open backed and closed models, and each brought its own pluses and minuses, but as time passed I gravitated to the AKG K712, which was a nice balance of improved, deeper bass and the huge, open and detailed I was craving. I enjoyed the 712 but then moved up to several different flagship headphones which resulted in me selling my K712. Several more years few by and I was still missing the AKG sound but wanted a more refined version. I hit the jackpot when I discovered the K812. Everything sounds incredible. Classical and jazz really come to life. Vocals are spot on. I’ve also been using them instead of my stereo system for movies, and they really shine. Crystal clear dialogue and huge, crisp reproduction of the movie soundtracks and effects. These are great all rounders that really deliver the goods. Highly recommended.

K812s vs K712s

I bought these as an upgrade to a pair of AKG K712 Pro headphones with some trepidation, as it was not possible to listen to them first, and there are a lot of mixed reviews out there on the internet. Made my decision based on the fact that although some 'professional' reviewers gave poor reviews of these headphones, normal people who just wanted to listen to them seemed to rate them very highly.Considering that these are purely for listening to music for me, I don't really spend my time worrying about technical issues at certain frequencies - I just want them to sound good! Switching to the K812s, it seems like several veils have been removed, to the point that there is no comparison between them - vocals, baselines, all of the song just seems to come to life more. I'm finding myself reaching for yet another album to listen to and marvelling at how enjoyable it is to hear. The only negative I would say is that whilst they are pretty comfortable, they don't yet feel quite as comfortable to me as the K712s did (although I do have rather more generously sized ears than most!).Overall, I highly recommend these headphones, regardless of some of the negative opinions of them from YouTubers.

One of the Best TOTL Open Dynamic Headphones
18 September 2017

I have auditioned a lot of the current TOTL headphones on the market. In that price range, AKG K812 is the headphone to sought after if you want something that is very pure, very revealing, while at the same time very holographic and very musical. Great for both engineers and audiophiles, though some audiophiles will crave for a balanced option. One small con is that, as it is so revealing, you will not want to listen to your poorly mastered tracks anymore. Also, in some days when you want a soft and mellow sound for your ears, these headphones will sound a bit too sharp and too tizzy. The reason why I only give 4 stars to the durability is because the screws near the ear cup of the headphone will loosen or tighten on normal use. Reference quality headphones

I own numerous headphones and IEM's--all top flagship models of the given brand, these AKG K812 are my reference point---just accurate and incredibly detailed--a pleasure to listen to. My second favorite set is the Fostex TH900--my "fun" headphones--punched up bass and high end, very enjoyable. Its nice to have both--given a particular recording--one or the other gives me an excellent presentation---

These sound totally different depending on how I amplify them, but in general, they are very even in frequency response and precise. In comparison, my old akg 702 sound flabby in the bass and hollow in the mids. Pairing these with my Alo studio six tube amp makes them very holographic and lush sounding, which is very different than the matter-of-fact like analytical sound they produce from the solid state amplifier in my chord mojo. Regardless of source, I can hear very specific things like vocal microphone choice, eq, compression, etc. I can really easy to tell what is going on with bass as well (jazz bass vs p bass, amplification, etc.). However, I would highly recommend these with a good headphone amplifier as they are able to showcase the strengths of a good ... MoreThese sound totally different depending on how I amplify them, but in general, they are very even in frequency response and precise. I chose these over the hifi man Arya because I liked the accuracy / clarity, which allows me to hear what is actually coming through my front end. I found the Arya rolled off in the treble and boring at normal listening volume. By the way, I find these to be very comfortable and the fit and finish is very luxurious. I was skeptical of the protein leather pads, but they are very well executed. Overall, great job AKG!
