I really love these shoes. They're a good mix between a hardcore trail running shoe and my road shoes.In addition to these outroads I also have the Altra Lone Peak 6 and the outroads have a slightly narrower toe box (sill much wider than other brands) and these also feel about 1/2 size smaller than the Lone Peak (I wear a 10.5 lone peak and 11 in the Outroad and 11 in all other brands). The traction lugs on the Outroad are toned down slightly vs the lone peak but still more aggressive than road shoes. I love the concept of Altra shoes, but just like my Rivera 2, the Outroad 2 has longevity issues. It's like whoever designed them just said: "This will do," halfway through the production process. Rivera 2 lasted 100 miles at best until the outsole rubber got worn out, and the top started to rip where the big toe goes. The Outroad 2 lasted 80-90 miles. The outsole still has plenty of rubber left (90%), but the top is ripped where the big toes are again on both shoes (Left all the way, right just the lining).I also own three Topo Athletic pairs and have never had these issues with Topo; my big toe did rip the lining inside the shoes but never went through the outer layer, leaving the shoes usable.While Altra claims these are road-to-trail shoes, these are more ... Outroad 2 has an excellent grippy material that is also reflective on their laces, but it makes tying shoes a pain since they are too short, mainly if someone uses shoes for running and wants to use a hill lock.

Thus, I was very excited to be chosen to receive my first pair of Altra shoes thru BZZAGENT. Altra is known for their zero drop, wide toe box designs, but with added cushioning! The shoes I received are the Outroad 2 model. Unfortunately, they fit about a full size too small, and the wide toe box is almost nonexistent. The Outroad 2 is of the slimmest design offered by Altra. The slim fit takes away nearly all of the wideness of the toe box, almost back to a regular athletic shoe. The Outroad 1 seemed much better. Version 2 seems to have added stiffness and bulk in the forefoot, presumably to add more insulation from rocks/roots on "light trails"? I would love to see a response from Altra on this point. If that's indeed true. If so, this seems unnecessary. For light trails version 1 seemed fine and this change makes it feel like I'm runing in sand or on a treadmill set at a 2% incline. Running in these is like having the parking break on. They do not work for me at all. But a great walking shoe!

This is a major let down because the snug fit was what I really loved about the size 9 with a slim foot shape (and continue to love about the Vanish). What exacerbates the sloppy fit in a 9.5 is that the heel is more squared off on the 2 and offers less lock. Despite my frustration with the sizing (why is it shorter than the Vanish?!) i'm confident these will continue to be the shoes i run the most. They're incredibly versatile and suite my needs perfectly. My most common routes involve running pavement to get to double track, with frequent deviations onto single track, and the Outroad holds its own on all surfaces. They're quick on pavement, great on dirt and gravel roads and I'm comfortable taking them on all but the most technical or wet single track. One aspect I was glad to see unchanged is the outsole, my gen 1's held up exceedingly well and I wore out the foam in the midsole at about 400 miles with tons of life left on the tread.
