Go for an adventure in any weather in the plush Altra Olympus 5 Low GTX. Altrarsquos premium EGOtrade MAX midsole foam gives you light and luxurious performance with a little extra bounce and durability. The Olympus is built with Altrarsquos Original FootShapetrade Fit, which is the most voluminous of Altrarsquos shoes. It also has their signature wide toe box so your toes can splay naturally. Like all Altra shoes, the Olympus has a Balanced Cushionedtrade platform that positions your heel and forefoot at equal distances from the ground (also called a 0 mm heel-to-toe drop), which encourages better alignment and form. Altra redesigned the outsole to make it even easier to run on uneven ground. The Olympus 5 has the grip and traction to take on any terrain thanks to its Vibramreg Megagriptrade, which is a durable and sticky high-performance rubber that works great on both wet and dry surfaces. A GORE-TEXreg upper will keep your feet dry as you hike through puddles or rainstorms, and Altra refined the sidewalls to increase stability while you are on uncertain footing. The premium collar has been redesigned for added comfort and keeps your heel secure. Go ahead and splash in the puddle and hike in the rain with the Altra Olympus 5 Low GTX.

Does Not Conform to Expected Altra Footshape

I have purchased 3 pairs of Altra Lone Pine Size 11 during the last few years and found them to be a great fit for my feet. I typically have to buy wide sizes, but it wasn't necessary for the Lone Pines because of their footshape. This summer I need a weatherproof trail shoe with more foot protection than the Lone Pine, so decided to try the Olympus 5. The reviews I read suggested it ran smaller that other purchasers had expected, so I ordered a half size up. They came last week. I can't even squeeze my foot in them to try them out. They are going back. You'd think that there would be some correspondence among the sizes of different models within the same brand. Not so between Lone Pine and Olympus 5. This is my first Altra shoe, and I now understand the hype. These are outstanding hiking shoes. The wide footbed is the first thing I noticed. It gives my toes freedom to spread and helps with mobility, especially on steeper terrain. The Vibram outsole and lugs provide great traction - I only wish I was able to test it in mud with the gore-tex (very dry here in Cali). The shoe has a sturdy structure to it while still allowing ample ankle movement and bend at the toes. Lastly I'm very pleased with the black look - it's stylish but minimalist as well, goes with all my gear. The shoe does take some breaking in, it's pretty firm at first, but then it's golden. Takes a bit to get used to the wide look, but the performance and feel easily outweigh. They are a tad heavier than I would have preferred, but I got used to it fast.Overall a fantastic, cushioned, structured and grippy low hiker. Absolutely recommend!

Good, but a bit stiff and heavy

This model is substantially heavier than the non-gtx version. This is really more a hiking shoe than a trail runner. The upper is made of some kind of thick synthetic leather. Good for winter hiking. The cushioning is great. The heel pocket is not very deep. I wish it was more because I get a bit of heel slip.I have not wore the shoe a lot so I can't comment on the durability, which scares me a bit since I've read a lot of reviews of the outsole separating from the midsole. But I have not experienced that myself as of now.Although a good shoe, I think it is too expensive compared too similar products. A justified purchased on sale or if a 0 drop is really important too you.If you're in between sizes, I would advise too size up.

Great shoes, but weirdly sticky
15 August 2023

I researched this type of shoe extensively for weeks, then bought a pair six weeks ago. They feel great -- the toe box is great for my bunion, the cushioning is equal to my Hoka Bondis, and the waterproofing has been perfect so far. I started to notice that when I was walking indoors, on smooth flooring, they made a significant sticky sound. So much so, anyone within earshot would look up. I thought the sound would wear off, but it hasn't. I contacted Altra about it and they said, “The Olympus has a Vibram outsole, which is intentionally very sticky. It keeps the wearer from slipping when hiking or trail running, but it will stick to slick indoor surfaces.” I have several shoes and boots with Vibram (or similar) outsoles, and none of them sound like this.I bought ... MoreI researched this type of shoe extensively for weeks, then bought a pair six weeks ago. They seemed like the perfect versatile shoe for the light traveler. I don't think I'm going to take them now. I can envision a visit to Westminster Abbey, where it sounds like I stepped in a plate of maple syrup on my way in the church. The sound is ridiculous and embarrassing.I can't recommend them, and I won't buy them again. It's a lot of money to spend on shoes I can only wear outside.

OLYMPUS 5 HIKE LOW GTX Sole coming unglued.
29 December 2022

After a little over 1 month of owning the OLYMPUS 5 HIKE LOW GTX the sole is coming unglued. Same as listed in 1 Star Ratings. Unacceptable for shoe of this quality. Why design a shoe with glue in inserts on the sole? Other than this issue they are the best shoes. Grotex, wide toe box, my toes are thankful for this design.Retailer replaced shoes for me. 5 Stars to my retailer. Hopefully this pair last.Altra also reached out to me offering to replace (see response below). 5 Stars to Altra customer service and willingness to back their product.Considering design of glued inserts on the sole I would only give this model a 1 star, but it is such a great shoe otherwise and great customer service. So I give it 3 Stars. Hopefully they modify this design leaving out ... MoreAfter a little over 1 month of owning the OLYMPUS 5 HIKE LOW GTX the sole is coming unglued. Pretty nice so far
5 April 2023

I have had an Olympus 3 and 4, Lone Peak 2-6, RSM LP, All Weather LP, Paradigm, Rivera, Viho and others. These are true to size 11.5 for me just like my Olympus 3 and 4. Since GoreTex is very strict I am hoping these beat all other failures by Altra in the past on a waterproof/breathable shoe that they have tried. Yes you should replace the shoelaces, but I keep my old LP flat laces when I throw out a pair so I won't complain on these but yes do not do round laces in the future Altra. I have also had multiple Topo's and I never found a shoe that could keep my feet from killing on long distance backpacks other than the Olympus normal but their downfall is top and side support on variable terrain. I hope these hold up and won't have failures, but initial impressions ... MoreI have had an Olympus 3 and 4, Lone Peak 2-6, RSM LP, All Weather LP, Paradigm, Rivera, Viho and others. TBD long term, but I still like Lone Peaks on decent short trail runs but not anything with a load on the back for my feet or long distance.

Squeak Squeak Squeak
3 May 2023

Overall, the Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX is VERY comfortable. I mainly use them for everyday use and for dog walks/hikes in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately, after only 6 months of easy mileage, my pair started squeaking loudly. I eliminated the (original) insoles as the noisy culprit. The squeak was still present without the insoles inserted. The sound even happens on carpet! I really like my shoes but can't really recommend them if it continues making clown sounds. Really bummed because the rest of the shoe is great.

Terrible durability. Tread ripped right off.
2 May 2023

Altra's durability has been getting worse and worse.I purchased a pair of these and on the first trail run, 5 miles in, the tread started peeling away from the shoe. Less than 5 miles!I returned them to REI the next day and purchased another pair thinking the first might have been a fluke. But sadly, no. Before I left the store I inspected the tread on this new pair and low and behold, the tread was already peeling away from the shoes. I grabbed the strip and it came right off. Very disappointing and unacceptable for an expensive shoe.Due to Altra's terrible durability with the past several generations, I've moved to Topo shoes and haven't been disappointed.

Too narrow. Don't fit like Lone Peaks.
1 June 2023

These seem like great shoes, but they don't fit like Lone Peaks and the feet that go in them, which I think are the primary interest group for this shoe. Despite Altra saying that this is the same Original Foot Shape, there was sharp pressure pushing in on my little toe on the toe box, meaning that the toe box was too narrow compared the the perfect fit of the Lone Peak. The shoe was a bit tight all around otherwise, but that could have been manageable without the more narrow toe box. I will try a half-size up, but I don't have much faith that it will be a correct fit. Other than that, the sole felt really good when trying on and I would have loved these shoes if the fit was consistent.

Your All Around Excellent Outdoor Shoes!

Traction, Performance and Comfort are the three things I judge a terrain performance shoe on. As soon as I received ALTRA's Running Men's Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX, I was taken aback by how bulky looking the shoe is. Upon initial inspection, the heels looked too high for stable walking on uneven outdoor terrains. However, all these first impressions were eradicated by the excellent experience I had with these shoes. First, I used the shoes for outdoor jogging on uneven and muddy terrains. The GORE-TEX product technology kept the shoes firm and waterproof so that it did not matter how much rain my outdoor jog faced. The Foot Shape Comfort technology really shines on my size 10 mens Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX. This enhances protection from uneven balance from uneven terrains that lessens injuries and discomfort from extended usage. I am more excited now that it is gearing towards winter, I can test its hold on freezing climate.I highly recommend this product for its incredible traction, performance and impeccable comfort. If you get to choose just one hiking, trailing, jogging shoes on the outdoors, you don't have to worry because there is Altra Running Olympus 5 that will fit your outdoor footwear needs.
