Good for gait but not comfy

I will preface this by saying I am not a runner - I got these shoes to protect my toes while working with excited kiddos who have difficulty with spatial awareness and motor control. I've been stood on and jumped on, and my toes are fine thanks to these shoes! An unexpected benefit: these shoes have made corrections to my gait. The curved forefoot forces me to push off with my toes (instead of just pulling myself along), which helps me walk twice as fast. I'm able to move with ease and keep up with people who are walking at an average pace, which I've not been able to do in years. The drawback is these shoes aren't super comfy. They feel too short in the toes. If I half size up, the insole hits in all the wrong places, so I settle for dealing with my big toe ... MoreI will preface this by saying I am not a runner - I got these shoes to protect my toes while working with excited kiddos who have difficulty with spatial awareness and motor control. The stack height also helps me sit at tables with my feet fully on the floor, which helps my back. If they were just a tad longer, they'd be perfect.

Horrible shoes.

I use them for light exercise meaning walking around my neighborhood for an hour while my son rides his bike. I measure my steps on my watch and these shoes have only walked 20 miles max. I'm very disappointed in the quality of the soles of both pairs of Altra's. I'll never purchase another pair. While I can say the shoes seemed to stay together for the two months I had them, the soles are a huge disappointment.

I'll never wear anything else!

Holy cow. I am in LOVE with these shoes. I had never worn Altras before, but wanted to get a pair of lower / more trail runny shoes to wear for a three-week trek in Nepal. I ended up with the Olympus 5 and, now home from said trek, I don't think I will ever hike in anything else ever again. These shoes handled the 100+ HARD miles of the Three Passes with total class and comfort. The biggest compliment I can give is that throughout the whole trip, I never had to think about my feet. Never. I was comfortable all day, every day... whether handling mud and silt and scree crossing glacier moraines or navigating the rocky uneven trails between villages. These shoes are definitely worse for wear after the trip, but it was also harder terrain than they'd find for a typical ... MoreHoly cow. I am in LOVE with these shoes. These shoes are definitely worse for wear after the trip, but it was also harder terrain than they'd find for a typical trail runner or hiker in the PNW. The only "issue" I found was that around 50 miles in they no longer liked to stay tied with a single bow... but a simple loose double knot fixed that easily. I will be buying a new pair to have on hand, because I just loved these so much.

LOVE these shoes
16 October 2022

I purchased my first pair of Ultras 3 weeks ago. Specifically the Olympus 5. I was struggling with my usual "go too" Cascadias. I felt like they were wearing out so quickly and not offering the support I needed for ultra distance trail running. My feet were hurting after long runs. I thought it was just me getting older and arthritis kicking in. I tried on every pair of trail shoes I could find. I steered away from Altras because I thought they were too wide and boxy for my foot. After feeling frustrated with all the other shoes, I decided I should at least give them a go. I tried on the Ultra Olympus and was still skeptical but was under pressure for a new shoe. I was aMonth out from R2R2R, my longest and toughest run thus far. I've never felt as good on a long run as I did yesterday. They offer great protection from rough terrain, the stability is unbeatable and the comfort is top notch! I'm a believer.

PERFECT for me!
27 September 2022

I like Altra shoes. I purchased Olympus 4 in my regular size (5.5) and I liked the cushion, overall, and design of the heel collar. I returned them because Altar doesn't offer a size 5 they were at least a full size or more too large.I read the reviews for the v5 and ordered a pair. I couldn't be happier! These do seem like they may be slightly smaller than Lone Peak or timp and probably half to full size smaller than. Olympus4. These Olympus 5 fit perfectly! like the way I can sung the heel cup and collar without having to over tighten the laces on my instep. The toe box not only offers Altra's signature toe box but, unlike some other Altar styles, they don't rub the tops of my toes. The uppers seem a less stretchy than Paradigm or torin. I like these better the fabric is more like Altra King Mountain hikers that I have happily worn for many, many mikes. My paradigms seem stretched and sloppy big after 2 months of two days a week wear. I have flat feel, have had 6 surgeries and neuroma that can severely limit my mobility if my shoes aren't quite right. I wore them inside for a day. Day 2 packed my old Alta King Mountain hikers as back up and wore my new Olympus 5s for an eight mile hike. My feet felt great. I wore my new Olympus for 10 miles the next day I am a happy hiker! I am going to purchase another pair. If these hold up after 2 weeks and 190 miles I will order 2 more.

SWELLING EDEMA FEET
27 June 2023

I have had a really hard time half my life finding a fit for my pitting edema feet , they are flat and wide and swell and often the footbeds in shoes are really narrow and make my feet cramp up so bad I can hardly walk . With these shoes I've found freedom , I can walk in them all day in confidence! I will always own a pair or two . My knees and hips are also in agreement that these are wonderful. They have held up well and are comfortable. I typically wear a 10 but the 11 seems to be my perfect size in these somehow - don't skip out in measuring when choosing your size . I would over and over recommend these to anyone with my issue . I've just run a 5 k in them with no issues at all and I'm beyond happy with this purchase and the variety of colors they come in . I am not paid or bribed or sponsored or reviewing a free product - this is my honest review off my own experience in hopes to help someone else . Thank you altra !!

Shocked at the versatility
4 October 2022

I was always skeptical of these shoes because of the stack height. But I have a chronic injury that's best prevented with 0 drop shoes - and I wanted a lot of cushion for the long races. These did not disappoint - as a matter of fact, I'd say they just saved me in my last race. The cushion is phenomenal, the shoes are actually light (even when soaking wet), they drain well, and the real surprise was the traction. I just completed a mountain ultra, where we were treated to rain, hail, lightening, snow and slush. The trail turned into a river and I had no idea what my foot was going to land on, but despite the stack height, these were super stable. I do think these run short - I had to size a half size up. But I am really surprised at how stable they are, how good the traction is, and how well they perform in a variety of terrain. High recommend.

UPDATE ON MY January 2023 review
1 March 2023

I have trained in the Olympus 4's and love them, see my original review of these Olympus 5's in January. After doing a lot of long distance training walks in the 5's they really started bothering my toes, the toe box seemed shorter or something. Frustrated that I paid so much for them but they were not working...I'm training for the French Camino for May so I need to get the correct shoe NOW. I was able to find a pair of the Olympus 4's from an online store, they worked perfect and will probably wear those on the Camino as I did for the Portuguese Camino last May. I just got off the phone with the Altra factory and told them my story about being disappointed in the 5's after trying to wear them on the 10-15 mile training walks...it seems that they are using a new ... MoreI have trained in the Olympus 4's and love them, see my original review of these Olympus 5's in January. They told me to size up 1/2 size but they wouldn't compensate me in a way of a discount should I purchase another pair of the Olympus 5. I haven't looked at the website on what they say but they really do need to include the info. I will probably purchase another pair, 1/2 size larger, but right now I'm really bummed. BEWARE! Size up and return them if you have to before your 30 day guarantee is up. I still love my Olympus 4's but can't find another pair around in my size.

You'll need gorilla or super glue to keep the soles intact
1 June 2023

When I bought these shoes they fit so well I immediately purchased a second pair. Around 150 miles in, I noticed the soles felt weird. After checking what the heck was going on I realized the treads were peeling off - as in inches of tread flopping around, hanging off the bottom of the shoe, tripping me up on the trail. I got some gorilla clear gel glue that bonds in seconds and so far so good - but I haven't taken them on anything with challenging terrain, like scrambling or rough rocks. While I was waiting for the required 24 hour non-use after applying the glue I used my other pair. At 30 miles into wearing the new other pair, half an inch of tread had already peeled off. The 4's are a bit too big and Altra doesn't make 11.5's in womens, but at least they can go 400 miles before I need to retire them.
