Almost too well as I have never had dirtier socks than when using these shoes. I have rolled my ankle in these about four times. Not bad, but concerning. The web mesh sides offer zero support. At this point I’m not sure if I should put them out to pasture and buy new shoes or wait for them to die entirely. Though I have a 100mile trip coming up and I’m not sure I want to finish it with my shoes duct taped together.Pros - They are comfortable. They are not mind numbingly bright like a lot of trail runners. They breathe well.Cons - They seem to wear out fast (no reference data points for me as I am switching from boots that wear forever by comparison). There is no support (though I knew this going in, but these seem pretty bad due to the stretchy ness of the body fabric). My feet have never been dirtier. They were pretty expensive.

Pronator’s nightmare; no support whether using an orthotic or not and will pain your knees without fail. Narrow heel counter provides very poor stability on anything more intrepid than a smooth, flat path. Tread wears out extremely quickly (50 miles or less) and even in new condition, the outsole has no traction on surfaces that are anything other than dry and grippy. Midsole is pointlessly spongy and provides no support for feet; every rock and root is felt fully. Mesh at front wears out and tears apart very quickly. Tongue always manages to find its way into the wrong place despite adjustment and readjustment. Only discernible upside is that the loop to pull the shoes around your heel are an improvement over previous versions.

Fell apart after one race
10 October 2023

I bought the Timp 4s for a big ultra race. Before the race I had only put 30km on them in training. At first glance, they are great shoes and aesthetically very pleasing but they did not last. Instead they fell apart before my eyes, mid race! When I got home, I sat down to take a closer look at the damage: the glue had come away from the lugs on both shoes, leaving them flapping around; the seam had completely come away on the right shoe and the same was starting to happen on the left; the mesh (which more or less covers the whole shoe) was virtually non-existent along the base of the shoe; and (finally) the remaining lugs were almost completely worn down. I salvaged the laces and the insole and the shoes went in the bin! Couldn't quite believe it - they had done ... MoreI bought the Timp 4s for a big ultra race. If you want to spend your money on a single-use, disposal trail shoe, the Altra Timp 4s are an excellent choice. You'll be absolutely fine for the first 30km at least. But, if you want a well-designed, robust shoe that works and will get you through race day comfortably (and maybe even allow you to have a few days out beyond that), look elsewhere.

First pair of Altras ☹️
13 September 2023

I took these out for the first time and did a quick 20 miles in the trails around my home. I was loving the feel of these and assumed when I finished that run that I had found my new favorite shoes. Sadly, when I was home and was removing my shoes the first signs of serious wear were showing. I couldn't believe it. I ran a couple more times in them before the mesh completely tore away and my foot was visible through the side of the shoe. Oddly as I boxed them up for return to the store I purchased them at I noticed the rubber was very worn after the 90ish miles I put on them. I have heard so much about this brand from other runners and even the founder's daughter who I was at university with. What I experienced was not what in was expecting after all the hype. It feels like they are a throwback to the original Timp, which I love and completed a PCT thru hike in.Pro- The Heel Pull tab is really fun! I'm excited after every run to rip off my shoes so quickly and easily.Con - The shoe fit is inconsistent across versions, which I think is ok in the short-term if Altra can make this change stick and have clear distinctions between their trail line up. (Example: Mont Bs are your slim/racers, Timps are wide/trainers, Lone Peak are versatile/wide/trainers). I found the last two Timp versions to be more secure, tighter, and lighter, therefore a shoe I felt comfortable to race in. Now, I'm re-thinking and making the transition to MB for future trail races, which is good, but I just didn't realize that until I used the newer Timp's for myself. Conclusion: The Timp 4s are a go-to trail daily trainer. They're sturdy and comfortable on long mountainous trail days. They absorb mile after mile and keep ya going strong. As I approach my trail racing season next year, I'll look to other Altras models (MB or Superiors) for racing, but keep the Timp 4s in my line up for all the easy/long trail miles.

Great on Maintained Trails

I purchased these the week of a big event in my life - my first ultra Spartan race in MT. I only ran with them once before the 50k obstacle coarse and they performed brilliantly on race day. I then used them on trail runs for training and additional shorter distance obstacle races and was still pleased with the product. My last big race of the season was a tough mudder infinity which ended up being 55k for me. Naturally I went with my timps but I always bring a backup pair of shoes on the long races. Unfortunately, after 30k the timps had a huge hole in the inner side wall on one shoe and two small holes on the pinky toe on both shoes. I believe that it was caused by blackberry shoots and other assorted sticks and logs that we were forced to run through. I purchased them at REI and being less than a year I returned them for a refund. I don’t regret buying them. I actually miss running in them. My recommendation is to buy them and stick to maintained park trails as much as possible. Could wear them for an obstacle race but risk the indurability of the fabric failing. That being said, they made it through well over 100k of obstacle course before failing so not too shabby.

Such a shame - comfy, but weak bonding & poor tongue design
12 July 2023

Purchased these on 27/05/23 from an ALTRA authorised dealer (Made to Run St Helens) for use on Total Warrior 01/07/23 @ Branham Park. The good; I broke them in over June and I suffered no injuries/blisters wearing them for the event. The bad; After Total Warrior I washed the shoes by hand (warm water) and dried them naturally in a warm area. I put the laces back in and then went to put the insoles back in. On doing so I felt the inside top of the toe guard rubber material hanging down over the big toe, and the second one to that in the left shoe (the right was fine). The rubberised toe guard appears to be constructed by adding a thin rubber strip to the inside/outside toe area and glueing the shoe material between these thin strips. I can't wear them now as the rubber inside keeps catching under my toenails (very uncomfortable). The other issue is the edge of the tongue cuts into the skin unless you wear a thicker sock that goes above the tongue to protect your skin (which I had to do). It's such a shame I had high hopes for these, but the construction seems unreliable. a basic product run test would have highlighted the issue with the tongues cutting into the skin. Given the cost of these shoes its very disappointing that they're not up to the job having only completed 23 miles in them.

Very, very poor durability
28 August 2023

This was my first pair of Altra's and my first pair of "nice" running shoes ever. The shoe fits great, and was very comfortable for the short period that it lasted. However the durability is unacceptable. My first time wearing them the mesh on the right shoe started peeling up off the bottom of the sole. I figured that didn't matter much, because I couldn't figure out what purpose the mesh served anyways. But after a few more uses on trails, the uppers near the little toe on my right shoe started developing some concerning wear. This weekend on an 18 mile trail walk/run it completely wore out, leaving a 2"-3" hole along the outside of the shoe. The left shoe has fared better, but is wearing in the same way. All told I have between 100-120 miles of 50% trail running and 50% road/treadmill running on these shoes, and for the price I expected 3-4x more (the local company I bought them from said I'd get 300 miles out of them). If the wear on your shoe looks like my left shoe in the attached pic, don't go farther than a couple miles from your car or run the risk of your shoe completely falling apart!

What is with the no padded tongue in shoes these days?!
12 October 2023

I loved the Timp 2! The Timp 3's had a weird issue where the toe box was tight right over when my big toe meets the foot and it hurt to run in them -no good for me. Then came the Timp 4's and at first I knew they wouldn't work for me because the tongue had absolutely no padding and I couldn't even walk around the house in them without feeling they were uncomfortable on the top of my foot. But there weren't other good options for 0 drop and wide toe box (after trying Topo and just not loving the Pursuit and worrying they weren't working for me) so I came back and gave them a chance, but I cannot tie up the shoes without getting pain in my metatarsals. So I tried adding my own extra padding between the tongue and laces and they are bearable for a short run, but it's not ideal. Please bring back a padded tongue!! I am feeling hopefully having just tried on the Outroad 2 which now has a padded tongue, and they seem promising. However, the Timp 4 (and I don't know about the Outroad 2 yet) has TERRIBLE grip. I have slipped over/off dry rocks when wearing them. The grip on the Tmp 2's was quite good, maybe not perfect but just fine. I also find the Timp 2's only last me about 400km, which is 3-4 months, ONLY. I haven't been able to wear the Timp 4's long enough, but I seriously doubt they will last, with the drainage tracts in the sole. Frankly they are just dumb. It's a trail shoe, you're going to get wet, and water goes both ways. Now there is just a useless hole in the sole that seems like it is a weak spot to me, and just gimicky. Can we just get a nice grippy sole that will last a while? Please go "back" to the Timp 2's (or 3's and fix the upper issue).
