Ever since Altra was acquired by VF Corporation in 2018 the quality and design of the shoes has slowly declined. I've owned several pairs of Altras including Superior, lone peak, Escalante, Torin, and Rivera. With every subsequent model there are "updates" (more like downdates) that ruin the shoes. I'm left baffled by these very questionable design changes. The tongue in the Torin 5 was like a knife and cut my ankle after my first and second runs which were pretty short (3-5 miles), after that I tried folding the tongue over and that helped alleviate the chaffing but made it uncomfortable at the same time. I never wore them again and went back to my old Torin 4, which now have over 500 miles on them and are breaking down. Thought I would try the the 6 and the tongue ... I run ultra marathons and I'm used to chaffing around my toes and feet but I've never experienced a shoe tongue that cuts into my ankle. Terrible design. I don't care how the shoes look if I can't run comfortably in them. The shoes have also gotten narrower which is disappointing. I loved the wide toe box as it fit my regal toes. But now Altra is trying to be like every other generic shoe company. I used to recommend Altras to everyone but sadly, I can no longer recommend them due to the decline in quality and comfort.

I'm writing this with ~100 miles and 30 hours of HIIT workouts on these shoes.Love the sole feel, its on par with the older Torins I originally fell in love with. Feels responsive enough for speed sessions but has enough cushion for long runs. Very breathable upper. Toebox isn't quite as wide as older Altras, but still plenty wide enough for my particular feet. The upper is very thin and almost transparent, but hasn't shown any real signs of wear yet which is promising. Compared to my Torin 4.5s its like comparing a knitted sweater to a compression shirt.I do not have any lace bite issues as others have noted BUT I have noticed that the tongues tend to shift to the outside of my foot during wear. I have not had some of the issues other reviewers noted. My only concern will be longevity with the upper being so thin, I wonder how well it will hold up as time goes on.

I've been a fan of the Torin series since day one. Some revisions were better than others. That being said, I prefer this version to the previous.I'm sure many people have complained about it, and I do not disagree the slightest bit, is that they should have listened to customers about the tongue situation. I thought it was just a myth, but it is true and that tongue does cut into the top of the ankle. And true to the point where I modified my shoes with scissors every time. I still have my Torin 4, with the perfectly un-harming tongue, which they should have used as a perfectly good working example. No blistering (like my Clifton 8s sometimes do on really long runs), no pains; legs and feet feeling great today. That makes it 97 miles and they are holding up like champs. To me, the shoe still has that cozy toe space and when place next to my old Torin 4s I cannot see any difference.Take my review with a grain of salt based on my experience with this shoe series. I enjoy them enough to buy them again even if it means having to modify the tongue. The shoe tongue prevents me from giving it five stars. By the way, Altra, please fix that shoe tongue!

I've had my Torin 6s for the better part of a year now and I've used them as mix of mainly running with some gym time in there too. I'm not a great runner my any means which my average run being around 4 miles a couple of times a week but I really like zero drop shoes so Altra made the most sense. I've been pleased with how this shoe feels. It's very stable, comfortable and light weight with a decent amount of cushioning without feeling mushy. However, pretty quickly a few pieces of the outsole started peeling on the edges. I haven't put a huge amount of miles on them a the sole doesn't look very worn visibly but the upper has really been a let down. First, I am a 66 year old male who has always defaulted to running when came to getting or staying in shape. Two years ago I was overweight and decided after suffering through COVID that I really needed to lose weight and get a little closer to an ideal weight. I dropped 70 lbs (thanks Noom) and set a challenging goal to run a half-marathon (because I am only half crazy). I was a middle distance runner in high school and had run some 5 and 10k races in the past. I will be running my third half next month.Long set up, but I was intrigued by Altra because, first, they are shaped like my foot. I have narrow heals and a wide forefoot. Second, I am a mid-foot striker and I felt the zero drop would cater to this. At first, I have to admit that the Altra felt different, ... Second, I am a mid-foot striker and I felt the zero drop would cater to this. At first, I have to admit that the Altra felt different, especially when walking. Running in them that funny feeling disappeared, but it took a couple of runs for that to happen. I liked them, but not necessarily love them. Then one day, I set out on a 10 mile training run (12:30/mile pace - I'm old) in my Altras. At about mile 7 or 8 my feet began to go numb. I had to stop and walk, but I eventually finished the workout. I think my many years wearing shoes with a heel lift may have ruined me. I have since run 10 miles in a pair of Brooks with no such issues. I considered exchanging the Altras, but have elected to keep them and only use them on shorter runs.
I have bought Altras (all Torins except for my first) since about 2016. My left knee was giving me issues and realized that I needed new shoes before my marathon (which was less than 2 weeks away) so I quick ordered some Torin 6s that I could try out and get in enough time to break in. The first couple days were great. A couple short runs and some walking and no issue. Same great Torins, but after a longer run the trouble started. There is a strap on the sides that connects a shoestring loop to the bottom of the shoe and it was wearing a crease in my foot and causing severe pain (especially in my left foot). I had never had that happen with Torins. Maybe that strap was there before, but not right over the part of my foot that caused this amount of pain. I could ... I ran a little more to see if it would go away and no. Since I now have less than a week before the Marathon I went out and bought Torin 7s that did not have that strap (Thank You). Thankfully the store had just gotten them in and had my size. I did not read every review of the 6s so maybe this is a known thing. I had (3) pair of the 5s so I know that they were good and I did not have a single issue with them. They look great still even after they lost the cushioning and support. I actually would have bought another pair of 5s if I could have. I love that shoe. The 7s feel great. I wear orthotics so breaking in the shoe that quickly is seldom an issue. I have every expectation that the 7s will be more than exceptional. I will write a review after Grandmas Marathon this weekend.
Bought Feb 2023; my last hope for staying Altra; and less than 10mi/wk of light road running, in June, tread started peeling (i.e. < 100mi including wearing to the office desk job). Superior 4 is the last good shoe I remember. After Superior 4.5s, toe box kept getting narrower and tighter. Switched to Escalante 2.5s to chase the natural fit but had to size up .5. They deflated < 200mi, picked up shin splints. Torin 6 = worst. Altra new models w/"original style" toe boxes are now mystifyingly tight across the top = stress fractures. I had hoped the Altra buyout would lead to more consistent fit for each model, better QA/QC, and lower prices from all the benefits of a bigger company in a competitive market, but the empirical evidence suggests less complicated designs ... I had hoped the Altra buyout would lead to more consistent fit for each model, better QA/QC, and lower prices from all the benefits of a bigger company in a competitive market, but the empirical evidence suggests less complicated designs (e.g lace holes used to have cinching properties that integrated with structure of the fit as well as the one-sided tongue -they were not moving a mm after they were tied), less durable materials, and disproportional price increases. I get big box retail wanting to push a trend of zero drop and roomier toe box than a Nike, but I'm shocked running stores are still stocking Altra. I don't mean to sound arrogant or man-splaining in what I wrote; it's just a big disappointment to resonate with a company that you feel understands what you need only to lose it after 8 years and start from square one with this crazy expensive trial and error process of finding the right shoe.
This is my second pair of Torin 6s in the past 6 months. I must admit that I really liked the fit and profile of these shoes, and with the tongue fixed from the Torin 5, I thought at first Altra had finally gotten these right. However, as I've noticed with the 5 pairs of Altras I've owned in the past several years, the sole construction is simply sub par. My first pair of Torin 6s I started using in February/March 2023, and within a week I'd noticed some separation between the outer tread under the toes on both shoes. However, this first pair's sole held up fairly well since then, and although the tread wore off unusually quickly and far faster than other brands I've purchased, I decided to purchase another pair simply because I like the feel and fit.But within a ... However, this first pair's sole held up fairly well since then, and although the tread wore off unusually quickly and far faster than other brands I've purchased, I decided to purchase another pair simply because I like the feel and fit.But within a week, this second pair started to separate even at the treads in the middle of the foot, which is exactly where it should be strongest, in addition to the same spot under the pinkie toes. I would love to think this has been fixed in the Torin 7s, but unfortunately a design choice was made to make the soles much thicker and change the profile of the shoe for the Torin 7s, a direction that does not meet my needs for lower profile running shoes which the Torins previously met so well. It's also upsetting that such an expensive pair of running shoes--which are meant to be an investment--would simply fall apart with so little wear. The photos are from less than two months after purchasing this second pair with less than 10 runs (all under 2 miles) on them. I've opted to wear other shoes most of the time because I've noticed these can handle so little. You can see that there is very little wear on the tread of the shoe but still a great amount of separation. I'm giving the shoe 2 stars because I did like the first pair I bought (though not it's durability), but this second pair has been a huge disappointment. To Altra, please ensure better durability on future models and please maintain some of these low and medium profile shoes with more minimal or less exaggerated soles! Putting an inch and a half of foam under the foot on all these new models goes against what Altra initially stood for and pushes away OG users who came to Altra exactly to find a wide, zero drop, and relatively low profile shoe in between totally barefoot and something much thicker like the majority of your products now.
I ONLY used these to run on a treadmill. Both shoes showed excessive wear on the outside of both heels after fewer than 125 miles (the left shoe wearing completely through the black outer sole in one spot). The only shoes I've ever run in that wore almost as quickly than that were Hoka One One shoes, and I was running outside on sidewalks and asphalt in summer in Austin, TX (they lasted about 175 miles and wore poorly over the entire sole, not just the heel). This is the only thing that earned any stars. After reading the other reviews for this model/style, I will be trying another model/style Altra shoe.
I've been wearing Altra shoes since 2008. It started with the Lone Peak, then a pair of Solstice XT, followed by the Torin 4.5. Every one of these shoes was comfortable, long lasting and of high quality construction. So, when it was time to retire my Torin 4.5 I was excited to get into the Torin 6 given the poor reviews of the Torin 5. From the start the shoe was fantastic and everything I had come to expect from Altra and the Torin shoe line. However, with less than 100 miles on my Torin 6 the sole on both shoes started to come apart and the uppers to tear.I submitted a warranty claim and in very short order I was on the road again with a new pair of Torin 6. I tried the Rivera 3 this time. They were very comfortable, but I found the front of the shoe to be too narrow for the overall length making me feel unstable while running. Also, the shoe laces were too short to tie properly.I absolutely love the Torin shoes, but the quality needs to come back to the previous standards. My Torin 4.5 gave me 600 miles with no issues and I still wear them for every day activities after retiring them from running. The soles are 100% intact, the uppers don't have a rip or tear to be seen.Altra-If you are having trouble with finding good QA and testing folks feel free to reach out. I'd be happy to test out your shoes for you and help bring your quality back to where it used to be.
