I am a seasoned triathlete and was excited to receive these shoes as a gift. They are most expensive shoe I have ever owned. There was no consideration that I am a long time Altra customer or that these shoes have many manufacturing defects and one of the most expensive carbon plate shoe on the market.

Great pair of Altra’s. I used to run with the Torin’s but the Vanish C is better. If you are a normally an Altra size 13, then size 13 will fit for the Vanish C. Unlike the Torin the Vanish C has a curved sole and that means that you may have to change your stride to push back because of the “rocking” nature of the shoe/sole. My Vanish Tempos have less tread wear after 200 miles than what my Vanish Carbons had at 20 miles. You need to be running a sub-6 minute mile pace with a cadence over 190 SPM for this shoe to actually be beneficial to improving your speed. I'll choose my Vanish Tempos for half marathon and longer and my Escalante Racers for 5k/10k races over these Vanish Carbons. Both are faster shoes than the Vanish Carbons.Recommendations: Use the rubber tread from the Vanish Tempo for the mid and forefoot tread while keeping the lightweight EVA tread on the heal. Change the the EGO Pro midsole to the EGO Max midsole that is used in the Torin 5/6 so that the Carbon plate actually works, at least for the front 2/3 of the midsole. The back third could remain the EGO Pro for more stability. I won't buy this shoe again until the tread is changed to rubber and the midsole has more energy return.

I preordered these from one of Altra's biggest UK distributers when they were announced.I own Altra Torins, Nike Alphaflys, Puma Deviate Nitros and Saucony Endorphin Speed 2s.These are good shoes, they're undoubtedly fast and comfortable. But they have a few issues which mean I wouldn't buy a second pair when these ones wear out.1) They've got some pop but it's nowhere near the level of Alphaflys, Vaporflys, Adios Pros, etc. That might seem unfair comparisons but the Vanish Carbon costs as much, if not more than most of those types of shoes when regular discount sales are considered. The toe bumper on both shoes has also detached and you have to make sure it is pushed back against the upper before putting the shoe on.4) The tongue has an incredibly annoying habit where the gusset will fold in on the edges so you have to keep fiddling with it.Some of these may sound like minor things and people might say "you're being very picky". Altra has a reputation for not always having the best material quality. But at their usual price point that can be overlooked because of the upsides that Altras do have. BUT if you're going to charge super shoe prices you need to actually produce a super shoe.I'm sorry, but this isn't one. It's a fast shoe. It's a comfortable shoe. But it is nowhere near as good as shoes at the same price point from other makers and is no better than shoes which are significantly cheaper.I wouldn't say I'm unimpressed. But I expected more for the price.
Used it for my first half-marathon. Used it during training for the half-marathon.First time I put it on, it felt a bit weird because of the rocker sole. My previous shoes were the Escalante and Escalante Racer which has relatively flat soles. Quickly got over the rocker sole and now wish they can be a bit more aggressive with the rocker design. It is too narrow for an Altra, I had to go half-size up to feel comfortable. PLEASE do this shoe in the original width, our feet expand after running that many kilometres! The sole wears out too FAST, please make it more sturdy. The tongue sometimes get stuck and folds double when putting it on. First mile I cranked out was about 7:30, and I knew that it was going to be a fast run so only about 3 miles. At the end of my run I looked down at my watch and I was averaging seven minute and 20 second miles which is pretty awesome!There is a review on the 'Tube' that states if you focus on your form, you can run in such a way that you can 'promote' the 'carbon launch' of the shoe. That's when I found Altra, changed my running technique, and significantly diminished a lifelong problem. I love Altra's zero drop shoes and wide foot box, which has helped me with my form as well as some swelling/blister problems I've had with other shoes. I did switch to Vapor Gloves for one season, but never felt like they were the right shoe for me.At the beginning of this past season, I bought a new pair of Escalante Racers and started my training. About two weeks before a 10k race, I saw that the Vanish Carbons were being released, so I excitedly scooped up a pair and was able to put in roughly 10 miles before my 10k. I haven't run in my Racers since.The first run was a little odd-the shoes don't feel like a classic Altra. They're tighter and much taller than any of the other shoes I've purchased from Altra. They have a unique rocker that also took some getting used to. Otherwise, they felt very comfortable underfoot, were breathable, and incredibly lightweight. I decided to go for a three-mile run to start. The first mile felt unusual as I figured them out, but around the two-mile mark is when things started to click; that last mile felt about as effortless as running has ever been for me.My second run is when I really fell in love with the shoes. I don't know how exactly to explain it, but the rocker shape, lightweight, and carbon plate all seem to propel you forward with very minimal effort. My leg turnover seemed to happen on its own. I wasn't planning on it, but on just my second run in my Carbons, I had a 5k personal best by a significant amount of time-I broke that PB again a few weeks later. With just three runs under my belt, I ran a 10k race with a stretch goal of sub 50:00. I broke that goal by over a minute.Fast-forward to this past weekend. After about 100 miles in my Carbons, training was going great with no shin splints, numbness, swelling, blisters, or any other issues I had experienced in the past. I broke my stretch goal of sub 1:50 by almost two minutes. Both of these goals are ones I've had for multiple years and haven't been able to get close to until now.Now, I don't want to say that the shoes were the entire reason for these personal records-I've lost weight, I've added cross-training into my regimen for the first time, and have changed how I fuel post-exercise. The shoes do, however, feel like they've helped push me to another level of training that I haven't been able to get to before. The biggest positive for me is the lack of injury. Each season I seem to run into some roadblock, be it shin splints, blisters, etc., that limit how I want to train. I'm sure cross-training has also helped with this, but 100 miles in a pair of shoes with not even a twinge of pain somewhere is a feat I have never once been able to accomplish. For this reason alone, I love the shoes... the great times are just icing on the cake.After 100 miles on the shoes, they're holding up nicely. No more wear than any other Altra shoe. I will definitely be buying a pair of Vanish Tempos when they come out solely because of the expense of the Carbons.A few other quick points: I switched out the shoelaces for elastic lace locks, but I do this with all my running shoes. I also laced the shoes slightly differently than the way they arrived, which I also do with all my running shoes. This time, however, I felt I needed to lock my heel in a little bit more to keep it from slipping. Traditionally, tighter lacing has led to numbness in my feet when I run, but I haven't experienced that at all with the Vanish Carbons. The shoes do feel a little tighter in the forefoot than I'm used to, but I was expecting this and they have loosened up nicely. I did bump up a half size, which I would recommend for other buyers.My one hesitation with buying a pair of Vanish Carbons was the price. However, after a few months in my pair, I would gladly pay more simply due to the lack of injury. The added bonus of a renewed sense of excitement for a sport that has always felt slightly out of my reach to really getting into, and this shoe more than justifies the cost for me.TL;DR: Since buying these shoes I've shaved multiple minutes off my 5k, 10k, and half marathon times. These shoes are the best I've ever owned and I don't plan on buying another pair as long as Altra makes them. (Other than the Tempos when they come out!)

The shoe felt much more narrow than Altra's other shoes and it had a bit of a curve that made my toes feel like I could have gone up a size. I liked the rebound on the tread but the stack height felt a bit higher than what I'm used to. That being said, it still felt like a zero drop shoe which I liked. After putting in as little as 6 miles, the shoe "relaxed" and it conformed to my foot more. I could feel the toe box open up, and that curve I felt went away (my toes could feel without feeling crowded). There was definitely a bit more spring in my step but because of the zero drop, it didn't feel unnatural in any way. The more I run on roads with ... Maybe it's my socks or something but seems to happen to me a lot more than with other shoes. Would I buy this again? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes. All in all, I'm glad I allowed myself to adjust to this racing shoe because I really like the comfy, fast, and free feel.

I normally wear size 12, and purchased 12 ... could have gotten a 12.5, but no issues whatsoever. The rocker shape geometry, really helps turn the feet over, the Carbitex half plate provides the perfect pop and allows the big toe to be involved. The lace material doesn't keep a tight knot, but I always tuck the laces in anyways. Lightweight, fast, cushioned, EGO Pro is revolutionary ... wore these and set my half and marathon personal bests in them; they save your legs. Normally, hurting by 35km, my legs were saved and still had pop. These are the best Altra racing shoe, the best.
