After 100 miles - good quality so far

I'd would probably have rated it 4.5 if that was an option. After 100 miles, I do like the shoes. I've put that mileage on in one month, including a half-marathon. While the shoes are stiff (if you try to flex them with your hands), they don't run "stiff." I'd say they feel stable and responsive enough, but certainly not too soft. For an original fit shoe, they don't feel as wide as my Torin 4.5's, and seem to have the same size insole as my Torin 5's which are considered a standard fit. I love the laces (have never come untied) and tongue (soft and doesn't move too much). So far no separation of upper from the outsole, including near the toe box. The outsole shows some wear, most is based on the way I run and the part of my foot that tends to hit the ground first ... MoreI'd would probably have rated it 4.5 if that was an option. The outsole shows some wear, most is based on the way I run and the part of my foot that tends to hit the ground first (rear lateral edge). The outsole does catch small stones and twigs in the crevices, so I check them after each run. The shoes are maybe a little narrower than I'd like, if I have a thicker sock on they tend to squeeze a little at the point where my 5th metatarsal protrudes out of the lateral side of each foot. I tend to manage that with lacing adjustments, but I don't have that squeezing in my Torin's. I weighed these shoes when new (12.7 oz. per shoe for a men's size 12.5) and they are much heavier than my Torin 5's (10.4 oz. per shoe for men's size 13), but the added weight doesn't slow me down while running. Also, around mile 10 of my half-marathon, temp was 53 degrees F, both feet seemed to be sliding a bit over the lateral edge of the insoles, and I could feel the lip of the insole. Perhaps some lace tightening in the forefoot may have keep my feet more centered, but it was a little concerning especially if I decide to try a marathon. Pictures attached.

Even the V5s drop in the spring of 2024. Get them those.Ultra cushion shoes shouldn't be a "deload" or "recovery" shoe. This talk is nonsense. I like running on a cloud for a 5k or a half, doesn't matter. The moment an ultra cushion shoes goes on the feet, the connection and comfort should be IMMEDIATELY felt without stepping foot outside.

I bought these for my daily walks, I walk an approximate 100 miles a month with a longer walk each morning. These shoes offer extreme cushioning that will take a moment to get used to, but it's not uncomfortable. They also last longer than most walking shoes, I would normally replace a pair every 3 months and you would see a gradual wear pattern. With these there is no wear pattern after month 1, and just minor wear after month 2. It's amazing. My only comment is that sizing can be a little off, i.e. if you wear a 13 for all other brands, a 12 would likely be fine. Definitely go to a store and fit them beforehand!I also have another pair of Altra's, I use the Lone Peak for long hikes in rocky terrain. Had to be broken in
1 July 2024

The first 100 miles or so were not great, too firm for the amount of foam and felt like bricks. It seemed like Altra just packed 3cm+ of regular, hard EVA into the shoes; not much cushioning for the stack height. But as they broke in, the foam softened up a little and made for a very comfortable, but still firm, ride. They don't work for super fast paced work, too heavy, but felt great for long runs and even more moderate base runs. The benefit of the thick foam was that the shoes took me past 400 miles no problem. Upper was very durable. Overall pleased with the shoe, but they are very firm and inflexible for the first 100 miles or so. Didn't do great in the cold, that seemed to cause the foam to firm up more; that could've been part of the problem, as I got the ... MoreThe first 100 miles or so were not great, too firm for the amount of foam and felt like bricks. Look good, but caused knee pain
22 August 2024

I really wanted these ultras to be my new running shoes. I had never had a pair of these but my girlfriend has a pair of zero drop ultras that she absolutely loves. These were also on a big sale so I thought why not.First problem for me was the stack height is super high but the cushion is very firm. For me this caused several issues while running as the height and firmness threw off my gait and caused my knee to swell right at the 1.5 to 2 mile mark. This swelling would last for the rest of the day and sometimes even into the next day. It took my a couple of runs to find the issue and it was these shoes. Even my hoka Clifton 8s which had well over the recommended miles performed much better than these.Overall these will be casual/ walking shoes which is a let ... MoreI really wanted these ultras to be my new running shoes. Not bad, but not as advertised
8 January 2024

My review is similar to others I have read here, and from reviews from professional reviewers. The hype on this show was that it was very soft and plush. It is not. It is fairly firm. it is not as advertised. Having said that, it is a fine shoe, but it should not be marketed as a super plush shoe. The Paradigm series meets that criteria much better. I am really rooting for Altra. I grew up in Orem Utah, where the founders are from. I want them to continue to succeed. There has been too many quality and design issues. How can the company continue to make the same mistakes over and over, such as the embarrassing tongue fiasco with the Torin. Did anyone at Altra actually try the shoe on and run it it before it was released? I immediately knew the heal was a failure. How could you run in that show with no support in the heal. Another fail. I understand that there is new leadership at the top. I wish Altra the very best, but please watch what you are doing. Don't introduce a new update unless the shoe is better. Don't regress. Don't launch any shoe unless it has been tested and vetted by several different knowledgeable people. No launch is better than a bad launch. Have some pride!

Overrated. Would not buy again
20 July 2024

I received these in the black men's size 8. Pros: And they are very light but sturdy! Originally size 9 in women and they fit with enough room for a thick sock. No need for me to size up which I like. Cons: these are not made for over pronation feet. I am flat footed and over pronate and these shoes allow my feet to roll inwards. It looks like it will support due to the wide footbed but this is a facade to the true feel. I feel let down. I will keep them and insert my ortho inserts into them and see if that helps to use for my daily walks with my dog but other than that I'll stick with my Asic Kayano 30 for the real walking. Thanks anyway Altra. And thank you Sierra that I didn't have to spend a ton of money!!!

Review Via Olympus
30 March 2023

I have been running in Altra shoes since Lone Peak 2 and Torin 2. I have switched off to another brand, but have returned back to Altra. I was excited when I saw Altra had developed this shoe reason being is because I have been using the Olympus 4 for my trail running for over a year. I don't have a lot of trail miles so that is why the longevity. When I bought this shoe I was currently training for Flying Pig Marathon. As of right now I have 138 miles in the shoes. I will admit that when I first ran in the shoe and several miles after that the shoe was quite firm. It reminded of how the Lone Peak shoe allows you to feel your foot engaging to the ground. So I was ok with that. As I have put on the miles the firmness is not as bad but it is still there. The things I ... MoreI have been running in Altra shoes since Lone Peak 2 and Torin 2. So I was ok with that. As I have put on the miles the firmness is not as bad but it is still there. The things I like are the toe box room for the forefoot, midsole support, the lightness in the shoe, the rocker, and the cushion of the tongue. The things that bother me is my heel slipping in the shoe. I have managed to figure out a way to minimize this and I have always tied my shoes this way is by raising my heel and tighten the shoe strings as much as I can tolerate. I do this procedure because I know as I am running the distance the foot will swell and create a pressure across the top of the foot. I did not have a problem with heel slipping in the Olympus 4. So that is my good and bad with the shoe. Don't get me wrong I love running in them and I hope what I have said helps out for future ideas with this shoe. Oh and I still feel like the Olympus 4 cushion is better. Keep up the good work and thank you.

Very Hard Sole
10 December 2023

For me the sole of this shoe felt very strange. It's hard to describe but the hardness was vastly different depending on the section. Under the ball of the foot the softness felt appropriate and if running this was fine as I land on the front to mid section. What seemed way off to me was the later and heel section. Especially the inner section of the heel. I honestly couldn't believe how hard it is. With normal walking on sidewalks each step was a reverberation of the cement all the way up my legs into my body. And the sound with each step was like I was walking in high heels or clogs as it made a very loud and noticeable sound with each step when the hard section of the sole made contact with the ground surface. The rest of the shoe was fine. I only wore them once ... MoreFor me the sole of this shoe felt very strange. It's hard to describe but the hardness was vastly different depending on the section. Wide toe box and extra cushioning
11 November 2022

This is my first pair of Altra's and I've been an avid runner for a large part of my life. These particular Olympus Via offer exactly what I need at this stage in my life. The cushioning on these shoes offers a lot of extra protection for my knees, joints, and low back with the Altra Ego Max midsole foam. There is a stack height of 33mm which allows for some serious shock absorption on my runs. My legs have felt less fatigued during my runs, and also less fatigue afterwards. I have really enjoyed the Altra Original Footshape Fit on these shoes as I finally feel I have a shoe that allows me to have a wide and comfortable toe box. The look of these shoes from a bird's eye view isn't the most attractive because of the big/boxy look, but the comfort and fit is fantastic. I'm also impressed by the Balanced Cushioning platform, which I was unaware of before today. This platform allows my heel and my forefoot to be on an equal distance from the ground, so my foot feels flat and planted instead of being angled downward. The Olympus Via has this unique Rocker Shape design, which took a moment for me to get used to. It's a nice little aid to propel my foot forward and encourages an efficient toe off for optimal stride. The heel cup is comfortable and fits well, along with the tongue being comfortable as it feels padded as well.Overall I am so glad to have been introduced to this shoe. The ultimate in cushioning and absorption of impact. I have tested many brands of shoes in my 30 years of running, and this might be my new go to shoe.
