The setup was fairly straight forward through the Alexa app. Once you get used to setting up the “skills†you want I.e . Ocean sounds, Halloween sounds, games, Alexa responds really well. You have use the proper command I.e. open ocean sounds and not play ocean sounds. Just need to get used to it. I have also set up another Echo Plus for a friend that needs to use voice commands. We were able to set the control of his tv, thermostat and lights using Alexa by connecting the other devices (harmony remote, Phillips lights and Nest). He loves it. Takes a bit of time to configure all of the devices.

I still have me 1st Gen echo that I moved to my down stairs office. I have to say that the 2nd gen echo sounds great slightly better then the 1st gen. The sound is deeper and clear. I will install compatible lights and devotions continue me automation process of my home. Me Nest thermostat is on time withe echo 2nd gen as well as my Vivint alarm system. Definitely recommend for assistance in full automation. I may have that it works well with my Marantz receiver as well.

But, the audio quality of the original Echo Plus is bettermuch less distortion than in the newer 2nd Gen, which is a surprise given all the marketing hype about the new Echo having a Bose sound solution. Echo is not really all that intelligent, but its a lot of fun to work with for every day tasks (play radio station..., whats the weather forecast, turn on the lamp, etc.). There are some bugs to work out (it connects flawlessly to bluetooth devices, then refuses to drop the connection saying there is no device connected. Received the Echo Plus as a Christmas gift, not really needing anything this year, I through out the Echo suggestion. Alexia did not disappoint and she is really added functionality to my smart devices. I easily got the Echo skill for my Vera controller setup and was able to control my z-wave lights instantly. It will not control locks or camera's for security reasons and I still need to get my Dlink water/leak sensors working on the system. It is easy to setup reminders and access our calendars in gmail. It works great at playing Prime Music, just ask Alexia to play a single song or a group or a type or era. I thinking I might pick up a couple Echo Dot's for the kitchen and basement
Good Points: Its a bargain... First and foremost. Even at full price.You must seperate Alexa from the Echo to review the hardware properly but together they make a good team. Decent sound for a stand alone speaker. Fills a room.Improvement Points: Sound could be better but you get what you pay for. The dot is underplayed. We have both and if you have some decent speakers the dot is the way to go.Alexa is still growing and its shows sometimes.
Good Points: Great for playing music with good sound quality and can assist with spelling and maths fairly easily. looks stylish and blends with other computer equipment. can use for quizzes and word games.Improvement Points: Sometimes does not recognise words and you need to give some commands in the right wording before it will register it, It will just say I don't recognise that and do nothing other wise. Need to spend time looking through skills list and enabling it. Most public transport apps don't work for local stuff like Busses.
