The Amazon Fire TV Cube 16GB 2nd Gen Streaming Media Player with Voice Remote is an absolute necessity if you are serious about enjoying streaming video entertainment. Amazon Fire Cube works great with Alexa devices. Super easy to set up. You can use voice commands for changing channels. Amazon deliveries show up on a picture-in-picture box on your TV screen. Ring doorbell alerts appear on screen and you can even view the Ring doorbell camera feed. If you use announcements on your Alexa devices, the announcement also flashes on your TV screen. Pretty cool device and super easy set-up. I was able to easy connect my Bose surround sound by verbally speaking setting up the Cube. I recommend this if you're a big Alexa user. I seem to switch to the Roku device over the Fire TV for the streaming app layout, speed and streaming options. I also like the Roku remote much better. I like the Alexa features and ease of use. I've been using cheap streaming sticks and boxes for a while and just got tired of them, the performance just starts falling up to the point that they become unusable. I already had a Nvidia Shield that I bought in 2017 and has been a fantastic device, I was looking at a cheaper alternative with about the same or similar specs and found this jewel. The Fire TV Cube has very impressive specs with a 6 core CPU, 2BG of RAM and decent storage size of 16GB. The specs are almost identical to the new 2022 model so save your money and buy this one instead. I mostly use Sling, Netflix, HDHomerun, Plex, Disney+, Prime Video and HBO Max. Every single one of those apps performs excellent. There is no lag while scrolling through the guide on Sling and channel switching is very responsive and smooth. The other apps I've mentioned also perform as they should. My only complain would be the amount of Prime Video ads in the home screen. It's something that you cannot change but after a while you just get used to it. Overall a great streaming box for the average consumer with some high performance if you need that extra power.
So I’m giving this 2 stars for a few of reasons and part of it is more of a problem with Amazon in general. First of all, the reason I bought this is that the Fire Stick 4k does not support Dolby Atmos for Netflix. I do not understand why, considering it’s available on Prime, Movies Anywhere, and Disney+ on the stick. This cube does support it but I’m pretty irritated that I had to spend another $80 to get that functionality. Secondly, this didn’t come with an HDMI cable, which is pretty unacceptable when you’re selling a streaming device this expensive. I had to use an old Nintendo HDMI cable while I wait for a more premium cable—that I also had to spend another $10 on—to arrive and I’m having HDMI handshake problems I never had with the fire stick. I had to use an old Nintendo HDMI cable while I wait for a more premium cable—that I also had to spend another $10 on—to arrive and I’m having HDMI handshake problems I never had with the fire stick. I only hope that the cable is the culprit here and not the cube itself. I’m also pretty irritated that you can’t buy one of these without Alexa integration. I have no desire to have an Alexa device in my home but here I am, because this is the only way to get Dolby Atmos on Netflix in the Amazon ecosystem. It does have a mute button that seems to stay muted but I don’t trust it. The wired network adapter that comes with it seems to be bad. It’s reliably capping my download speeds at 90mbps while my WiFi connection is pulling down 300+mbps. I was hoping that the wired connection would get me a more reliable connection but that speed doesn’t leave a lot of headroom in apps like Movies Anywhere. There’s also no Atmos for the Apple TV app just like on the Fire Stick 4k. I don’t know if this is an Apple thing or an Amazon thing but I don’t like it either way. The only positives here over the Fire Stick 4k are that it supports Atmos on Netflix, it appears to be slightly faster, it has more storage, and it does look nice (though not invisible like the stick).
I purchased this to replace my gen 1 Fire TV Cube for my new LG 77" OLED CX TV and my Yamaha RX-A2A receiver. I love the Fire TV Cube because I can use voice to change and control devices as well as utilize a plethora of apps on it.It operates faster than the gen 1 and the Dolby Vision is such an excellent picture. However, there is an issue where the TV screen will occasionally turn black for a second and come back on with the Dolby Vision logo in the top right of the screen as if it was just turned on or started displaying such signal. This will happen a number of times during the course of a movie and is extremely annoying.I have new HDMI 2.1 cables which is overkill for this device but decided to swap it as a step towards troubleshooting the issue. I changed a number of settings on my TV, Receiver, and the Fire Cube itself but nothing resolved the issue. I do not know if there is a handshake issue, if I have a faulty gen 2 Fire TV cube, if this is a software issue, or if this is an issue with this device and my TV or AMP. I do not have this issue with the satellite, Apple TV, or Blu-Ray player.I replaced this with my original gen 1 Fire Cube and no longer have the issue. I put the gen 2 Fire Cube in my Bedroom with my old 1080p tv and RX-A1050 and there doesn't appear to be an issue with it set up with these devices. What a shame, I liked the improved responsiveness of the new cube and the Dolby Vision but I just couldn't take the screen randomly going black while trying to watch TV.
THE POSITIVES: it's fast, reliable, has more storage than the stick versions and has a built in echo dot which allows for hands free control. I've paired it with a couple of echo premium's and the sound is great for a bedroom setup. It also has the option to connect via WiFi or Ethernet. The cube itself is small so the footprint is minimal which minimizes any possible obstruction or distraction from the TV.THE NEGATIVES: Although it plays well with almost all streaming services the 1 major exception is Apple TV. I've had zero luck getting Apple TV to play on the cube. I researched solutions endlessly and only found that this is a pretty common problem. I've had zero luck getting Apple TV to play on the cube. I researched solutions endlessly and only found that this is a pretty common problem. I've tried every possible troubleshooting avenue and nothing works. I've communicated with Amazon and after many failed attempts they passed me along to Apple, which is nonexistent support for the TV app. I have a 4k streaming stick and it plays Apple TV with no issues which makes this even more frustrating since the cube is over double the price! Which leads to the 2nd negative. What you get for the higher price is: double the storage, built in echo dot, built in Ethernet capability, and the ability to pair with Amazon speakers for a home theater setup. Although this feature is available in the 4k stick and the lite stick, it's been my experience that these options don't work very well (dropped audio, static, etc.).If the additional features appeal to you then the price is justified. Although I'm overall happy with the product the price could be better.
This replaced a 4K Max firestick (which now does duty solely as a music streamer) so any differences in video or audio were subtle to my ageing eyes and ears but it does load things faster. Out of the box, Alexa was happy to turn my Panasonic OLED TV on and off and even change HDMI channels but that only lasted a week and now she doesn't recognise my TV at all. Perhaps it can be restored through the app but I can't be bothered as research has revealed this happens regularly. Also out of the box I only achieved 24 bit, 48 khz audio on hi res tracks but that has now magically reverted to 24 bit 192 khz streams without any reconfiguration or software update. We'll see how long that lasts. Not a bad product (especially at a discount), just not great.
I think I've seriously tried every type of media hub/streaming device on the planet. Though Roku has its positives with many app choices & fluid interface, the FireTV Cube is simply in a whole other graduated realm of advanced streaming tech. The processor on this device is WAY faster than sticks and previous gen models. The storage space is excellent, whole home connectivity with Alexa & other Fire Sticks in the home is a fabulous feature, and what really makes this unit shine is when it's paired with a FireTV Recast DVR. I can access all my local over-the-air recordings with ease and there's never any monthly fees (just need a decent antenna signal, which is no issue where I live). Bottom line: If you're invested in the Amazon ecosystem, especially Music Unlimited HD, then it's a borderline must-have. If you're not invested, then there are probably better options including some you probably already own.Full disclosure, I'm an Amazon fan who has been a Prime member since the program started, I use Prime Video all the time, and I recently switched to Music Unlimited HD after 7+ years with several of the major non-Apple music streaming services: Groove (RIP), Spotify, Deezer, and Tidal. Simply put, if you subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited HD and you have audio gear that supports 24-bit/192 kHz, then the Cube is the best option. Simply put, if you subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited HD and you have audio gear that supports 24-bit/192 kHz, then the Cube is the best option. The debate whether that quality even makes an audible difference is for a different time and place. I tend to think it's more indicative of higher quality recordings which is really the most important factor. Plenty of 16 bit/44 kHz (CD quality) and even more lossy tracks sound great, if they are done well. Anyway, back on topic. While the Stick can technically do the same quality, too, I couldn't get it to stream above 44 kHz with my AVR and I'm not alone. A quick internet search found a few forums with folks reporting the same thing, apparently caused by a combo of the Stick's OS version, an app update (this was early March 2021), and some AVR brands/models. The Cube was on a different OS version at the time so I decided to return the Stick and try the Cube which I found streamed perfectly to my AVR at the highest quality possible. Since then, the Stick has been updated to the same OS so the issue may be fixed. And for less than half the price, it may be worth trying it first if music is the primary reason to use it. However, the Cube is much faster and navigating the interface is more fluid. The Stick has noticeable lag, and given how limited and clunky Fire TV OS is in general, it's more than a minor annoyance. Which brings me to the biggest problem: the OS and the Amazon apps. They're as basic as it gets and the home screen is embarrassing. It has next to no customization options and very few of the in-box apps can be removed so the screen is cluttered with stuff Amazon wants you to see. It's cumbersome even for someone such as me who only uses 2 or 3 apps. I'm also constantly going in and out of menus whether it's the settings or an app. Even after a month of almost daily use, I still accidentally exit back to the home screen frequently and I feel as if I'm "fighting" the interface to view an album in Amazon Music or to browse TV/movie options using Prime Video, which BTW, is pretty much unusable for stuff available via Movies Anywhere. Fortunately, all the standard apps are available but I don't use any except Movies Anywhere and HBO Max. They work well, streaming quality and reliability is excellent, but are you getting anything you can't get from your smart TV and/or gaming console and/or other streaming devices? That's the big question to answer before jumping in. And if you're not already a subscriber to Amazon services with no plans to, then this probably a pass. Final note: my "yes" to "Would you recommend this to a friend?" is based solely on the assumption he/she currently uses or plans to use Amazon services and specifically Music Unlimited HD.
