This PC is balanced and has handled everything I've ever thrown at it. For an entry-level build, it makes games look amazing. I primarily use my PC for web surfing, gaming, and word processing. I honestly don't see how I could upgrade as far as processing power goes, this will do 1080p 60fps without a problem. For just a bit over $100 after tax, you're almost getting an i7 7700 non-K, which I had back in 2017. With an all core overclock to 4.2 on the stock heatsink, this little guy beats up on that CPU. Does run a touch hot with the wraith stealth OC'd (around 75C peak), but stock it peaks around 63-65C. Stock to stock, its a touch faster in games than a first gen Ryzen 1600 (14nm) I have. Overclocked it keeps the lead at 4.2Ghz when the 1600 was at 4.1Ghz.I was able to score over 2400 on Cinebench R20 multi thread at 4.2Ghz, and my R5 1600 scored 2900 at 4.1.With a $25-30 heatsink upgrade, you could probably hit 4.3-4.4Ghz, but at that point you might want to consider the 3300x if its near MSRP. The Ryzen Series of CPU's are absolutely the best bang for the buck in comparison to their Intel counterpart. This processor is lightning fast with the 6 core /12 thread layout and overclocking capability. The Spire cooler and thick heatsink attribute to this potential. I do plan to upgrade coolers in the future, simply for longevity by keeping temps down. I have it paired with an ASRock B450 Gaming K4 mobo, 16GB ddr4-3000 ram, and RX 580 graphics card(600w EVGA power if you were wondering). Factory settings I can run 100+ FPS on World War Z(which is an optimal game for this setup) on high/ultra settings. Definitely recommend.
The Ryzen 3 3100 sets a very high bar for an entry level desktop CPU.I moved to this platform from an Intel i9-9880H mobile CPU which has double the cores/threads and a higher boost clock (albeit slightly lower TDP). This CPU can run circles around it in both heavy office productivity and casual gaming performance (paired with a GTX 1650 Super and dual 1440p 144Hz screens).I picked this CPU because of the compelling pricing for my budget and was assuming I would upgrade in a few months to a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7, but I honestly don't think I will need to after the exceptional experience I'm currently having with this CPU.tl;dr - look no further, this CPU is likely all you need.

The 3300X is more favoured by reviewers but ultimately I reckon the 3100 is the real winner of the budget segment processors. The performance deficit due to the 2+2 core layout in reality is only a minor hinderance. The 3100 actually has the advantages of much lower TDP and thermals. At stock speeds it stomps on my overclocked 4670K in productivity and 1080p gaming. You're getting Skylake Core i7 performance with 16MB of L3 cache for a budget price and that's a great deal. The Wraith Stealth cooler can be a bit loud but it still cools adequately with a quiet fan curve.

For the unfamiliar, remove the plastic heatsink risers on your motherboard (which are for clamp-on heatsinks/coolers which isn't the kind you get in this package), lift the CPU clamp handle on motherboard, align the dot on the corner of the CPU with the dot on your motherboard and the CPU will slide into place easily once it's aligned (if you have to apply any force STOP, it's not aligned properly), then lower the CPU clamp handle and lock it into place. Then decide if you want the AMD logo on the heatsink to face left or right (the sensible choice, upright, is not an option) and align the screws of the heatsink with the standoffs on the motherboard. Start each screw (using just enough pressure to get each screw started so you don't damage the motherboard) going diagonally (if you tighten one side first you risk squishing the heat paste out the other side), then tighten each screw, still going diagonally, just one turn each and repeat until the screws are fully tightened. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws because if you strip or pop-out the motherboard heatsink standoffs your only option will be to buy a clamp-on style heat sink and use the plastic heat-sink risers to attach it. Finally, attach the CPU fan to the CPU fan power connector which should be nearby on the top edge of the motherboard and you're done. The only real problem I encountered was the heatsink backplate which the the heatsink standoffs are attached to was only attached to my motherboard (MSI x570-A Pro) via the heatsink risers. This meant, once the risers were removed, when laying on it's side the backplate drops off. though only a few millimetres in my case. This in turn made me initially think the heatsink screws needed to be pushed down even harder than expected to reach the standoffs. Fortunately, I realized the problem before I put so much force on the heatsink screws that I damaged the motherboard, though it was a challenge to find a means to firmly prop up the backplate while getting the heatsink screws started. Overall, it's a budget CPU bought on sale at a reasonable price with a (so far) very quiet CPU fan so I have no serious complaints other than the one hard-to-turn screw. That said, every time I look at the sideways AMD logo it bugs me that they'd make such a careless design choice in this age when nearly ever case has a window to see inside.
