I chose this CPU for a revival project of mine that involves an old HP xt963 that I bought as a non working unit for the case alone because it reminded me of a PC my brother gave to me in the early 2000s. That PC I have spent so many hours on it and I regretted selling it to friends a few years later who ultimately threw the entire thing away instead of asking if I'd like it back. This time I will not be giving up my little sleeper of a gaming machine. Big thanks to Newegg and AMD to thank for making this possible and helping keep this case off the scrap heap. Am totally pleased with the results and I intend to take this to future LAN parties since its smaller and lighter than my tower as well as act as a back up gaming machine if in case my main rig goes down. ... MoreI chose this CPU for a revival project of mine that involves an old HP xt963 that I bought as a non working unit for the case alone because it reminded me of a PC my brother gave to me in the early 2000s. I bought two of these in a "build your own PC" Christmas project where I built computers for each of my kids. It was my first time building a PC, and these processors both worked well in the final builds. What I appreciated most was the durability of the hardware, because of course I totally messed up the installation on the first of the PCs. I forgot to lock the processor in place before attaching the fan with the pre-applied thermal paste and it wasn't until the next day that I realized my error. I then had to pry apart the fan and the processor, bending a few of the pins in the process, which I then used tweezers to move back into place. It was a disaster and I was freaking out. Fortunately, none of the pins broke off and I was able to get everything reassembled. ... MoreI bought two of these in a "build your own PC" Christmas project where I built computers for each of my kids. Great value for the money. This is not as fast as the current Ryzen 5 3600, but it does the job well. I have this paired with an ASUS Prime X470-Pro, 16 GB GSKILL FlareX 3200 MHz RAM and an ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 Top OC Edition. Plays all my games at 1080p from 60 to 300 FPS. Can't complain about these results. Here are some FPS numbers from some of the games I play with this set up Fallout 4 - 1080p - 60 FPS by default, can change FPS limiter in .ini file but I don't recommend it. COD-MW3 - 1080p highest settings - 300 FPS Max - 191 FPS Average - 127 FPS minimum. COD4-MW - 1080p highest settings - 300 max - 250 avg - 187 min Fallout 3 & New Vegas - 60 FPS Ultra settings FEAR 2 & 3 - 60 FPS Very High settings Unigine Heaven 4.0 benchmark high settings - Max ... MoreGreat value for the money. It is a great processor with a very simple caveat. When purchasing this processor I took it for granted that the stock fan would be enough to cool the processor and keep in great working order. I found out quickly unless I went into the BIOS and changed the fan to a higher speed that the processor would quickly and easily after about 10 min overheat. Having to ramp up the speed on the stock cpu fan gets noisy fast. To fix this problem is very simple and inexpensive. It is necessary to purchase an (Arctic Freezer 33 eSports ONE) cpu cooler. This cpu heat sink uses heat pipes and a super silent fan to keep the noise way down. You don't need an expensive water cooling unit. This setup is also geared for overclocking the cpu to around 4.0 ghz.
Overall, I would say if you got one with good silicone, then lucky you. I do not recommend this product and especially not if you want to overclock it. I dont think it would handle it very well, and would kill the processor in no time. I have overclocked my 3600x and it seems fine, but now I am scared that it is going to go out on me too. I went against the grain, and all my friends called me crazy for going AMD and I just kept saying, watch and see, well now I am the one looking like an idiot because I have this ROG Strix board here but no processor for it, and used the computer for school. Pretty messed up if I must say so. There are absolutely no bent pins, I always monitor thermals on my computers, so this is just a junky garbage processor,. I was thinking of getting one of the new 5600x processors too, but I do believe I'll be going back to Intel, even if I have to buy a whole new board and processor, because I know AMD will not warranty this product. It was bought on 6/3/2020 so its almoooost 5 months old, gee I have had disposable contacts last longer than that. Can't afford to buy a new processor every five months. If AMD will allow a return for the same unit then I will change my overall review, but as of right now, 2 eggs and 2 eggs only, and thats mainly because I like newegg and the processor did get here fast, and was easy to install. The rest of the experience with it was gargbage.
Paired this with: Asus PRIME B450M-A Micro ATX motherboard 8gb DDR4 3200 memory 128gb SSD 1tb HDD Used GTX 1060 3gb Micro ATX case 450W Bronze power supply Built a budget friendly gaming PC - I love everything about this build. The 2600 is plenty fast for everything I will need for years to come. I don't do much other than gaming, some discord, occasional streaming. I don't run anything too intensive but it definitely has the speed to do plenty more than what I throw at it. My daily driver before was a laptop with an i7-4500u, which is a night and day difference but that's to be expected for a mobile vs desktop comparison. Overclocking seems easy enough, but I have no need for it at this point. If you're on the fence about Ryzen - DO IT and don't look back. Haven’t been so excited to use AMD processors in a long time. These new Ryzen processors are fantastic with good performance and core count for typical daily use no overclocking needed. Originally I wanted total 8 cores 16 threads but the price point was too good to ignore for the Ryzen 5 2600 at the time and now with the 3000 series available the price drop makes this processor an amazing deal. I didn't understand the base vs. boost clocks at first so note that the boost is not an all core boost. Turn off "Cool n Quiet" in your BIOS/UEFI when you want an all core boost of 3.7GHz. Otherwise keep "Cool n Quiet" on and use the Windows 10 power plan "AMD Ryzen Balanced" (hint: set minimum processor state to 20%) and you can confirm with Ryzen Master that the CPU is ... MoreHaven’t been so excited to use AMD processors in a long time. Popped this bad boy into a cheaper MSI B450M Pro-M2 V2 (~75$), after I decided not to just buy the cheapest-possible board on the market for me new build. Well, after figuring out that I could unscrew the latching cooler mount on the mobo and directly screw the cooler into the CPU backplate that came w/ the mobo - and having to estimate how much force the screws were supposed to apply - all seems in order. I just kept alternating between screws in a cross-wise fashion to distribute pressure evenly, which I learned while rebuilding engines w/ my late father when I was a kid. Just figured once the cooler/backplate could no longer move around on the CPU, plus a small turn of each screw, then it was just about snug enough. Definitely way quieter than my FX-8350, which ... MorePopped this bad boy into a cheaper MSI B450M Pro-M2 V2 (~75$), after I decided not to just buy the cheapest-possible board on the market for me new build. Definitely way quieter than my FX-8350, which must've had a bad bearing that I somehow wasn't making a conscious note of because when it was on it sounded like a tiny ball bearing getting smacked around in a box-fan. Just hoping this build will last me as long as every other build has.
I can't say that I'm especially surprised, but I am disappointed. This package was priced much below market value, but I decided to take a chance. It works great--until it spontaneously shuts down and restarts. I purchased this specifically to do AI upscaling of long videos, and it's useless for that because it can't complete a job before it restarts and cancels the project. I recently purchased a new AMD Ryzen 5 2600, but haven't gotten around to setting it up with the new mobo. Maybe that will solve my problem. I call shenanigans.
