I spend three weeks building my last computer. It would not load an OS (either Win10 or Ubuntu) -- the computer would simply freeze half-way through the install. It turned out the lightning does strike twice. I had a bad motherboard (which had other problems and I was sure was responsible for the hanging), but a NEW motherboard would still hang. I blamed everything else -- Graphics, Ram, Power Supply. Finally, I went to a generous friend (who understands AMD devices intimately), where after much switching of procs, memory and power supplies, we proved that the proc had some sort of internal damage. Mind you, the proc would stay stable while in BIOS and ran all kinds of tests just fine. I finally RMA'd it. The new chip (bought elsewhere) works great.

I upgraded from an i7-8700k to this. The 3960x is lightning fast and provides far more stable performance. I cool it with a Noctua U9, which doesn't do very well, but does alright for most things. If the CPU itself is at full load on all cores, it'll run at tj max and throttle a bit. For my most demanding tasks (GPU-based video rendering), it sits comfortably in the low 80s.

Pretty resilient and well-constructed CPU with enough power to do almost anything you throw at it. Unless you specifically need more cores I guess the 3960x 24-core version represents the best value for money for a medium-to-high load workstation. The only problem for the moment is cooling which is due to a massive size of the CPU itself. Unless you go fully custom, very few coolers on the market today cover the entire processor, which runs at 95 degrees max. Air coolers aren't the option for a prolonged high-load sessions like rendering a big project. But this is likely to change once cooler manufacturers pick up the trend, I guess.Overall, a very good performer at a reasonable price. Get one and see your benchmarks double:)
The orange carrier frame for the CPU was broken out of the box, and CPU cannot be safely installed. This really should not happen with a $1000 plus CPU, and is causing lost productivity. Currently wrangling with AMD to see if they can ship a replacement frame. If I had known this would have happened, would not have purchased this CPU.
This is my first AMD CPU in 15+ years and it has not disappointed. While this is the cheapest entry into the Threadripper Zen2 world, it can't quite be described as good value. I was undecided between this and an Intel i9-10900K but, after another announced delay from Intel, decided to give team Red a shot. The 3950X would have been a fairer match but, having made the jump, I decided to spend more money on the CPU and motherboard now and wait to invest in a new GPU. I picked up a second hand RTX 4000 off of eBay to go with this which is working fine for my current needs. I mainly do development work and video editing. I often have several virtual machines running. This CPU was made for the sort of work I do basically. I do game but not very often and rarely new titles.
The seal to container the CPU comes in was torn already, the plastic latch inside was broken off and floating in the container and the CPU was not seated in it's carrier correctly. Paid price for a new item and this was definitely not. Disappointed considering the price.Appears to work okay in a quick benchtop, waiting for a larger cooler to come in so I can put it under load to ensure it works as it should.
The processor I received fails to POST at the officially supported DDR 3200MHz speed. AMD couldn't help diagnose the problem - don't expect them to offer any useful advise. G-Skill sent me another RAM Kit to test, and gave me some things to try in the BIOS ... but it didn't help. ASUS also was useless at diagnosing the problem .. I think my teenage daughter knows more than ASUS support.Be warned you are paying a lot of money for these expensive parts .. if you encounter a problem, the support is somewhere between terrible and infuriating. If you can avoid using a PC ... buy a Mac instead. Apple is the ONLY Truly Premium consumer electronics company on the the planet.
Coming from an overclocked i7 3770k this is a massive upgrade. I work with several different programs and can now do so concurrently. I am using this with 64gb of RAM and run blender, unreal engine, photoshop, premiere pro as well as quixle bridge and quixel mixer. I am able to render out a scene while still working in another program with no hiccup whatsoever. There is so much processing power underneath the hood of this thing. I catch myself looking at my computer a lot in awe of how stupid powerful this is. If you can manage the heat, keep the precision boost enabled as it does provide some impressive jumps in clock speed. These threadripper chips are crazy powerful and after seeing it perform over the last 6 months, they really are at the top of the food chain ... MoreComing from an overclocked i7 3770k this is a massive upgrade. This CPU is great. the best your can get price per performance. Im coming from an Intel 4930K which was good long lasting until board issues. Now intel reminds me of Symantec. AMD is king in innovation. I'm cooling this with a Kraken X73, which has perfect comparability, the 3960X comes with mounting bracket.
